First Internet Bank - Online Services no longer available with switch to Narmi platform

For anyone who uses FIB, heads-up: apparently with the change FIB has made to their online platform - they're now using Narmi - they no longer have the capability of providing online connectivity to Quicken Classic (only Quicken online). One can manually download QIF or QFX files and import them, but the automatic downloads are a thing of the past and they have no awareness of if/when Narmi might one day enable that functionality.

As an account holder at FIB for 23+ years this is sad news, but as painful as it might be to change my long-standing accounts, transfers, etc., I value my ability to easily download and reconcile transactions moreso than the friction of making those changes.

So…. anyone have recommendations of a solid banking institution with reliable Quicken integration, high interest rates, and a full list of features for checking / savings accounts?

Well let me offer you some hope. I ran into that a few days ago, and the way the rep explained things it sounded like I was screwed! Here's what I did. I went to the FIBI page where the download transactions drop box is. I chose the quicken qfx option and opened the file and it imported fine. Don't know if this step is necessary but I then went to preferences for download transactions and selected to always save web connect files. Then I downloaded from the FIBI dropdown again. I then executed the downloaded file and got a prompt if I wanted to use one step, update, which I said yes. Since then I am now on express web connect and it is working great! Hopefully this remains the case and the only problem is that it has been handled poorly by the bank!

    Fingers crossed!

The above is the roundabout way I handled my situation since the rep told me only way to connect is via the downloads link on the account page, e.g. checking. You could also just try adding a new account and seeing if it comes up with an option for express web connect(the Quicken list of FIs now shows FIBI as express web connect).

@Bob_L - Thanks, glad to hear there's a potential solution.

After I download/import the QFX file the second time (I think that's what you were referring to vs. OFX?), Quicken does indeed prompt me to set up automatic downloads. Unfortunately, though, I'm getting an "Oops. We're having a problem. CC-501" error after entering my credentials in the Activate One Step Update screen. Will have to try again later..

Be sure you use your web password and not the direct connect one from before.

Yes, trying web login username and password and no luck yet.

Although I did get slightly different behavior when I tried to add the account as an Express Web Connect connection (selected FIB from list of institutions when adding online services, selected Advanced Options, and was able to select EWC) — this time it's saying "Oops. Did you mistype your login? CC-503" and indicating my login is incorrect.

Honestly not sure what the issue is at this point.

If you didn't already try deactivating the account first. Close and re-open quicken.

You could also try downlading to a file like I described above again since it starts with being signed into your account on a partiular account. Other than that Quicken support should be able to help.

Well, it appears to be working at this point.

For anyone interested in the play-by-play: After getting another CC-501 error when trying again to enable connectivity using the steps Bob_L outlined above, I re-tried the method of adding FIB as an online institution and selecting Advanced Options and selecting EWC. One item that was different was that DC was not listed as an option this time - it had been listed before. Only EWC and WC. Anyway, I proceeded from there and entered my web login username/pw and it appeared to work normally and I was able to link all my FIB accounts at that time (the first sync took a very long but it worked).

    Fingers crossed it stays working.

Thanks Bob_L - greatly appreciate your response - after being told by their CSR that it wouldn't work and not having success otherwise I had given FIB up for dead for OSU updates and was planning to move to another bank until I saw your note.

Glad it is working! Like you I was dreading have to change a lot of vendor accounts set to pay via FIBI. FWIW, my plan was to go to Capital One since I already had a checking account with them and quicken was working fine with them. I would definitely pay a penalty in terms of interest rates but would have had to just eat that.

bkinva, now that the migration of FIBI is complete today, does your method still work? And is this instruction you gave for the desktop PC version or the Internet web version? Thank you for your help.

@Dimarc Still works at the moment.. This was all done in the Windows desktop application. And fwiw I set up QMac today and it works fine as well.

@TomKK Worked for me in both Windows and Mac both this AM and just now. Maybe try again?

My normal Direct Connect connection failed today. I tried several times to create a new account at FIB using Advanced Options | Express Web Connect. Previously I got a CC-503 error. When I just tried again (4 times) doing that Quicken just crashed (closed and asked me for info to send a Crash Report). This is with Quicken Classic Deluxe ver. R63.21, build 27.1.63.21.

@TomKK See my earlier post above and try it that way. We could be in trouble however as I just reviewed the List of supported FIs and it now shows as web connect rather than express web connect.

Worked for me as well. The caveat is I wasn't smart enough to specify a smaller date range than a month. So I was stuck either manually matching or deleting a ton of downloaded transactions🤨

OK, I think I've got it working now. I have four FIB accounts, 2 savings & 2 checking. First try using Bob_L's approach almost worked: it actually resulted in the 2 savings accounts connected Express Connect and the 2 checking accounts connected Web Connect (with a "improve connection" note beside them). One step update I think resulted in the 2 savings accounts updating (no transactions expected but Quicken reported 2 accounts updated). The two Web Accounts were seemingly ignored and not updated. Then I clicked on the "Improve Connection" note on one of the checking accounts, entered my FIB password when prompted and both of the checking accounts now show Express Connect and appear to update. Won't know for sure until tomorrow when all accounts should report interest but looks promising for now. Thanks

Thanks for creating this post, @bkinva. I too am running into this limitation. I see that FIBI now states that Quicken Classic is no longer supported, near the bottom of this page: https://www.firstib.com/personal/online-mobile-banking/

I tried @Bob_L's workaround but it didn't work for me. Even after turning on the "Give me the option of saving to a file whenever I download Web Connect data" checkbox in the Web Connect preferences within Quicken. My FIBI accounts remain in "Web Connect" mode instead of whatever more automated mode they were in a week ago.

I too am going to begin researching alternatives to FIBI, and alternatives to Quicken. I've been banking with them since 1999. I've sent the following message to FIBI support. I hope others are also expressing their frustration directly to FIBI.

I'm disappointed that I can no longer "One Step Update" my FIBI transactions into Quicken. Manually logging in to firstinternetbank.com and making a ton of mouse clicks to download insecure plain text QFX files for each account, one at a time, is a huge chore.

Please work with Narmi to re-enable this functionality.

@peaTeaSeaDoh I was hoping to edit my post but too much time had passed - despite FIB telling me the only option was to manually download I was able to get express web connect working as described above and it seems to be working (at least for the past few days). Hopefully that continues.

Thanks for the update, @bkinva. I couldn't get the direct download stuff to work at all today but I'll keep trying periodically.

Mine is working now. To get it working, I needed to select Edit/Delete Account on one of the account registers for FIBI, then go to Online Services, and select the hyperlink that said something along the lines of, "an improved connection experience is available for this account." It then brought up a wizard which prompted for my FIBI username and password, 2nd factor auth, and then it downloaded transactions successfully.

The status on these accounts is now Express Web Connect, like the majority of other accounts I track in Quicken.

I had to add a new "account" in Quicken for the overdraft protection attached to my FIBI Checking. The original overdraft protection was apparently of a different type, now incompatible. The new one appears as a fully paid off Loan which isn't quite right. Yes, it has a zero balance, but it works moreso like a credit card than a single loan. Not a big deal for now, as it's only there in case I badly mess up my transfers or whatnot.

Today I performed a One Step Update. (After QC updated itself to the latest version — probably unrelated to the following.)

Express Web Connect successfully downloaded the new transactions but it did not get the current checking account balance from FIBI. Instead, it populated with the statement balance (8/31). There were roughly four or five transactions so far in September so those imported but because the Online Balance is wrong, they did not auto-reconcile.

As an experiment, I tried downloading a QFX from FIBI and imported that. That corrected the Online Balance! But it resulted in duplicate transactions that I had to manually delete one by one. So not a great solution.

Anyway, posting in case others are noticing anything similar.

I am having a similar issue with FIBI and auto-reconcile. It appears to be a day behind in that transactions downloaded today need to be cleared from the auto reconcile and previous transactions done the same way the day before now need to be set to cleared to get the difference to zero. Help report filed today
