    Typically, it is beneficial to have multiple years worth of data in your Quicken file. Is there any particular reason you need to make a year-end archive? Are you having any performance issues in your Quicken file?

    Truncating the transactions for prior years is ill-advised. If you do so, you'll lose the ability to research prior years in your current file and need to open the files from prior years, possibly several, to get a complete history of your transactions … and when you realize the futility of that you'll discover that it's just this side of impossible to "put Humpty together again".

    IF, however, you're NOT seeking to truncate but merely to create a file as-of year-end, any backup will serve as that.

    Also, truncating prior years will result in no appreciable improvement in Q's performance … so that's not a reason to truncate.
