Bug: Investment transactions not reflecting in portfolio
Hello,
I have stumbled upon a new bug with Quicken:
Quicken Classic for Mac
Version 8.3.2 (Build 803.58902.100)
macOS 15.7.1
I downloaded all of my newest investment transactions from Fidelity Investments into Quicken Mac by clicking on the "Update All Accounts" button.
All of my investment transactions from yesterday came into Quicken just fine on the "Transactions" screen.
I bought a few stocks and I sold a few stocks — and most importantly, all of these stocks have already been setup in my portfolio in Quicken for years now. Everything was working fine for years.
All of the stocks that I BOUGHT yesterday show up successfully on my "Transactions" screen, and they also show up successfully on my "Portfolio" screen.
However, the bug crops up when it comes to SELLING my stocks:
All of the stocks that I SOLD yesterday are ONLY showing up on my "Transactions" screen, but they are NOT showing up on my "Portfoilo" screen.
For example, I sold 100% of one of my stocks yesterday, and it shows that on the "Transactions" screen. So I have ZERO shares of this stock left. However, when I go to the "Portfolio" screen, it still shows that I own all of my shares of that stock!
On the Portfolio screen, when I click on the little triangle next to the stock name to reveal its transactions, it DOESN'T show my SELL TRANSACTIONS! Even though the sell transactions match the stock symbol, the stock name, everything. It only shows my BUY transactions.
So the Portfolio screen shows that I still own 100% of my shares of the stock, even though I actually own ZERO shares in this stock.
This bug did NOT crop up for any of my BUY transactions. All of my BUY transactions show up successfully for all of the stocks that I bought.
I've checked to make sure that I'm filtering on the proper dates in the calendar above, and I've checked to make sure that I don't have any other weird filtering going on.
Now here's where it gets REALLY REALLY STRANGE:
If I MANUALLY enter a new BUY transaction for that stock, it immediately shows up on the Portfolio page.
But if I MANUALLY enter a new SELL transaction for that stock, it DOESN'T show up on the Portfolio page!
The dates are all the same, too.
I don't know what to do to let Quicken know that I've sold all the shares of this stock!
Can somebody at Quicken please investigate this issue?
Thank you!

Hello @Scott Rose & @MajKLM,
Thank you for letting us know about this issue. To clarify, is this problem happening only with Fidelity accounts, or is this happening with all investment accounts? When did you first notice this issue? Is this happening only with newer transactions (downloaded and manual), or does this also impact older transactions that were previously reflecting correctly on the portfolio screen?
I look forward to your response!

Thanks for your message! I only have Fidelity investment accounts, so I can't speak for other investment banks.
But what's interesting is that this problem did automatically resolve itself 24 hours later, which is good news!
I just noticed this issue for the first time on October 21st, and it seemed to only impact newer transactions, not old transactions. Older transactions were reflecting correctly.
Thank you! :)

Thank you for your reply,
I'm glad to hear the issue seems to have self resolved.
If it returns, please let me know!

Hi, @Scott Rose
What you are likely seeing here (which isn't necessarily a bug) is related to Placeholders offsetting your entry.
When you update, the brokerage will report the totals of each security. And when you sold those shares, Quicken finds a mismatch between what is in your data file and what was reported from Fidelity. So, the balance adjustment gets entered as a transaction at the beginning of your register. If you scroll to the beginning, you can see any placeholders in light gray. You likely had an Add Shares transx for the amount of your sale.
When you updated your account 24 hours later, Fidelity now provided Quicken the current share balance (0) and it updated and the problem appeared to resolve.

Thanks, @John_in_NC! Hmm… I don't see any placeholders for this stock at the very beginning of my transactions. Unless the placeholder was temporarily there for the first day, and then Quicken removed the placeholder the next day when Fidelity provided Quicken with more information.

Yes, that is what I meant: Quicken got the updated share balance next update, so the placeholder went away.

Oh wow, that may have been exactly what happened in my case!! Thank you for sleuthing this with me!! :)
