What is 'zzz Bank of America'?

I see that my Quicken Bank of America connection is changed to 'zzz Bank of America', I didn't do this. Looks everything is still working but this is (another) undocumented change in BoA connection that caused a lot of troubles last time. What is going on?

    After reading the post by pbmsmit, I noticed that the FI for my BOA accounts has also been changed. In my case, it has changed from "Bank of America - Quicken" to "zzz-Bank of America - Quicken". After seeing that, I also noticed that "Bank of America - Quicken" has been removed from the list of FI available when adding accounts.

    I switched to "Bank of America - Quicken" in the fairly recent past (I think within the last 6 months or so), when the previous FI that I was using (Bank of America - All Other States) was also removed from the list.

    FWIW, both of my BOA accounts are still updating OK using EWC+.

    Is there's a known reason for why this is happening?

    Yes, @tompfr , especially after the 'disaster change' a few months ago, I'm very withholding with these undocumented changes. It is still working…..

    @pbmsmit Luckily, in my case anyway, that change a few months ago was painless. All I had to do was re-add and link the 2 accounts using the new FI name (Bank of America - Quicken). At that time, the connection method had already been changed over to EWC+ a few years ago.

    Hello @pbmsmit & @tompfr,

    Thank you both for sharing this with us.

    Bank of America is undergoing another migration, and the Bank of America - Quicken instance is one of the affected BIDs. The migration began today.

    If you are presented with a "Fix It" option/button, please use it and follow the prompts. If you are not presented with that option, please do the following:

    1. Create a backup of your Quicken file first.
    2. Deactivate all Bank of America accounts in Quicken.
      1. Select the Tools menu and select Account List....
      2. In the Account List, select the account you want to deactivate, and then click Edit.
      3. In the Account Details window, click the Online Services tab.
      4. Click Deactivate next to the service you want to disable. image.png
      5. Click Yes to the message confirming if you want to disable this service. Note: If you do not receive this message, additional information is available below.
      6. Click OK to the confirmation message.
      7. If you have an investment account that is linked to a cash account, you need to deactivate the online services from the investment account, which will automatically deactivate the linked cash account.
      8. Important: If you are deactivating/reactivating an account to fix an issue, you'll need to deactivate all the accounts with the affected financial institution that you have activated in Quicken (including hidden ones). Once they're all deactivated, then you can follow the steps to reactivate.
    3. Revoke Quicken’s third-party access from the Bank of America website.
    4. Reactivate the accounts in Quicken.
      1. Go to Tools > Add Account. image.png
      2. Select the bank for the deactivated account(s). If prompted, select the connection method.
      3. Enter your credentials and click Connect.
      4. When the list of located accounts appears, choose LINK next to each account you want to reactivate.
      5. Click Next, then Done on the last prompt.

    Let us know how it goes!

    Oh no, not again! Learned from last time, I have already daily backups, but last time a backup restore made it worse as (it looks) not all 100% is backup-ed.

    zzz-Bank of America - Quicken works can't I just leave it, or do I have to deactivate and reactivate?

  • pbmsmit
    pbmsmit Member ✭✭✭

    Same question, but I think it will only work until they change it again to another 'permanent' name. But based on last time 'don't change a working connection'……..

    @pbmsmit & @hmday,

    Thank you for following up.

    You can leave it as long as it works, but I don't know how long it will continue working. Ideally, this will be a smooth process and not cause too much disruption.

    An internal alert is in the works for this issue, and we will post it as soon as possible. As soon as I have that, I will post it in this thread for you all as well .

    Hope this helps!

    @Quicken Alyssa

    I don't see any announcement about this. What exactly is the change that BOA is going through? Its been stable (for me) on EWC+ for a year or more.

    @Quicken Alyssa

    I'm assuming that we should now be choosing the plain old "Bank of America" FI from the Add Account list?

    I ask because, as I mentioned, the "Bank Of America - Quicken" choice no longer exists. There are a total of 5 BOA choices in the list now.

    @tompfr,

    Thank you for posing this question.

    Yes, if you were connected via Bank of America - Quicken, the best option would now be Bank of America.

    Hope this helps!

    @Quicken Alyssa

    Ok, I was successful in getting my 2 BOA accounts set up using the "Bank of America" FI. Thanks for the help!

    4 of the 5 accounts were done without issues, I couldn't link my credit card. Had to redo it 2 times to get it fixed (luckily without a restore). And it looks it is working (but you never know the next day). Another 2 hours spent on something that should not impact customers.

    Just to clarify if we currently see zzz-Bank of America - Quicken, we should deactivate/reconnect now, or wait until zzz-Bank of America - Quicken stops working (presumably when this transition is completed), at which time we should use the "fix it" flow? At the time of this writing zzz-Bank of America - Quicken is still working.

    I would do it soon to avoid it just stops working.

    Instructions are in the Announcement below:

    NEW! 2/24/26 Bank of America Migration (multiple BIDS) — Quicken

    The thread of Quicken that it will stop working forced me to change it now, and hope everything will go correctly. These changes should be transparent to customers.

    Deactivating and reactivating did not work for me. I have 2 completely separate credit card accounts and was automatically reconnected to the zzz- account for both with no option presented to select an alternate BofA entry. Clearly not really fixed yet, I guess I'll have to wait for the "Fix Error" to show up.

    I deactivated and re-added my Bank of America accounts, as instructed above. I have two credit card accounts issued by Bank of America, and now the One Step Update Summary lists them as xxBankAmericard Platinum Plus. (The edit account window lists the bank properly as Bank of America.) Now what the heck is xxBankAmericard Platinum Plus?? (Transactions still appear to be downloading normally.)

    My BOA accounts have been successfully downloading via "unknown" for a while now. I deactivated/reactivated for "Bank of America" EWC+, and all is well. During the re-activation, a Merrill brokerage account was also suggested, which I declined as it works with "Merrill Lynch Investments".

    @Quicken Alyssa in your instructions above to deactivate/reactivate…. after deactivating the accounts in Account Details/Online services tab, the instructions are to go to Tools Menu/Add Account… rather than using "Set up Now" in the Online Services tab for the existing accounts (after disconnecting). Is there a reason it has to be done this way?

  • GeoffG
    GeoffG Quicken Windows Subscription SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭

    After deactivating BOA, you need to go back to the General tab and remove the zzz-BOA… entry from the FI name. That is what sends it back to zzz-BOA and be sure to select OK. Before reactivating the account, be sure zzz-BOA is not listed, then when you reactivate, it should succeed.

    Set up Now will try to use the current financial institution information in the Account Details which might lead you down a path where it selects the wrong financial institution "entry" and never give you a chance to select the right one. Add Account doesn't look at any given account's details and makes you pick the financial institution. And since the last part of Add Account has you linking to the existing account this still allows you to use existing accounts.

    EDIT: Note that as @GeoffG pointed out if one clears all the Account Information, then "Set up Now" will behave like "Add Account".

    I have two data files using BofA with the same 3 credit card accounts. Both data files downloaded Feb 24 fine. But I noticed One-Step-Update's list had switched BofA to "zzz-Bank of America." (It never had the Quicken suffix." The 2nd data file uses "Bank of America-All Other States" but the Accounts List says the institution is "unknown." As zzz indicates they are changing connection, I wanted to update the 1st data file.

    I deactivated its 3 accounts. I used Tools > Add an Account and there were several choices; one was Bank of America. When I selected it, it again connected to "zzz-Bank of America." I deleted the Financial Institution and Account Number data in the General tab. During multiple attempts, I found these problems.

    • Quicken had updated their Add Account popup page. Mouse-over no longer shows the Quicken account name. I had to match my account using their balances which, fortunately, were all different.
    • While matching the accounts in the Add Account popup, if you have accidently mismatched an account, when you go back to correct it, the account is no longer in the list. You have to cancel and start over.
    • BofA's browser sends the code to your phone. If I use a text message for a second time, I don't receive it. I found a voice call will work or delete the browser cache.

    I reported these issues as Ticket #12255539. I finally got a connection as "Bank of America."

    Today (Feb 26), the first data file updated fine. My 2nd data file using "Bank of America-All Other States" failed One-Step-Update with a CC-901 error, saying "Your bank is requesting you reauthorize your accounts. Click Reauthorize," but - there's no place to click!

    I deactivated the 3 accounts. I used Tools > Add an Account and entered Bank of America. It lists "Bank of America" and "Bank of America - Wealth Management", "… - Health Accounts", "… Money Network", "… - CashPro", and "… Private Bank." I used "Bank of America." I had BofA's website text me the code but it failed. I then had it phone me with voice, entered the code, and match up my accounts. Reconnection was successful. My Account List now says the institution is "Bank of America."
