Quicken will not let me add another line to my register. I make one entry per year to this account.

I am in the register of an account I created to keep track of the current balance of a personal loan I made, on which no payments are made (or expected) but which accrues 3% annual interest every March 5th. I paid off my ex-wife's mortgage so she would not be homeless. She agreed to pay 3% annual interest but not make any actual payments until she dies or moves and the home is sold; I will then receive the current balance in this account, so I need to add each year's accrued interest to keep the balance accurate.

Is this a banking account or an asset account?

Is there no blank line at the bottom of the register to add this year's transaction? Sometimes scrolling down with the scroll bar does not get you to the bottom. Try hitting the down arrow to see if that does it.

Also if you have not done so already, you may want to check with an accountant to make sure the loan is structured and documented so that the IRS does not treat it as a gift.

Jim -- Thank you. It's not attached to a bank or to anything online (that I know of). Quicken classifies it under "Property and Debt". I did check with my accountant, which is why I had to collect interest; personally I do not need it and would not have done that. There are plenty of blank lines at the bottom of the register, but when I fill in the next one (3/5/20) with the 3% interest accrued for that year and hit CTRL-ENTER, nothing happens -- the entry is not recorded and if I place the cursor on the following line, to do the following year, I cannot type anything. If this cannot be fixed I will just delete the Quicken account and keep the info in an Excel spreadsheet. I just wondered if I was doing something stupid, but it looks like Quicken is.

If I may chime in here ...
What version, edition level (Starter, Deluxe, etc.) and release (R xx.xx) of Quicken are you using?
US, Canadian or other country version?
Is your subscription expired or still active?
If it's still active, have you recently downgraded your subscription to Starter Edition from a higher edition level?
To enter a new transaction into a banking register, there should be a blue blank entry line at (usually) the bottom of the register. Use that blue line to make your entry.

Can you please capture an images of the account register showing the issue, sensitive information blacked out as necessary to protect your privacy but annotated to describe the situation, and attach the image(s) here?

Please save images to files of file type PNG, JPG, or GIF only. They're easier to work with than PDF files.

I'm using Starter v 44.27, US, active subscription. I changed my IRA from stocks to annuities so no longer needed DeLuxe, and downgraded to Starter version two years ago (As it turns out, not so smart, since I discovered that Starter cannot handle a car loan). Anyway, mortgage File attached.

Yes, I have since discovered that the first time I calculated the interest I got it wrong, so of course ALL the interest entries are wrong. I re-did the math for the Excel version, but I would still love to know why Quicken does what it does. I've been using Quicken for 20, maybe 30, years, and it doesn't stump me very often.

Looks to me like this is yet another victim of the downgrade to Starter. Investment and certain types of Asset or Liability accounts created in Deluxe are not supported in Starter. You can look at but not work with them.
Please take a look at this account with Edit Account Details. What's the Account Type?
Switching to the Display Options tab, what are the fields in Account Intent?
Worst case: Create a new offline Checking or Savings account and move all the transactions from this register into the new account.

I can't find Account Details or Display Options in any of the menus.

Thank you both for your suggestions, but I think I'll just keep the info in an Excel file elsewhere and avoid having to do anything too complex for an 80-year-old.

I just discovered something interesting, when I opened the account list to delete this mortgage account: it's not there; it's not IN my account list. It doesn't exist. Aha. No wonder.

Right-click the Account name in the Account sidebar, select Edit/ Delete account. That brings up the Account Details screen with 2 or more selectable tabs.
Alternative: From the open account register click the Actions gear icon, then select Edit account details.
