I am trying to reconcile an account.  I open the account and press ctl-R.  I get:

How do I invoke reconciliation?

Typically you click the gearwheel in the upper right hand corner and click on "Reconcile."  Does that work properly?

What type of account is this?

Not all types of accounts do what I consider a true reconciliation with the reconciliation wizard.

My Credit account does reconciliation, but my Cash account will only do the Update Balance.

As @UserDavidC points out the dialog you are getting is exactly what one will get for a cash account, the same is true for most asset accounts like a house account.

I was able to reconcile it in the past -- quite a while ago.  The last reconciliation was done in mid 2021.  I started using this account and wanted to reconcile it.

How do I check to see the type of account?  How do I change it to one that I can reconcile?

You can see the account type on the Account Details dialog.  In general, there isn't any way to change account types.

To RECONCILE is to Compare.  You can't compare a Cash account to anything, because there's nothing to compare it to.
You can only update to balance to whatever figure you desire.
