How do I split up a current file into two files based on date ranges (Q Mac)

Quicken for Windows used to support this. Quicken support often recommends spliting the file into smaller versions (less time span per file) to fix data corruption, e.g. missing transfer and other transactions.

Q Support is WRONG! None of the SuperUsers recommend this … it really doesn't improve speed.

And to whatever extent it might be helpful, the Quicken Mac database is a world removed from the Quicken windows database. Quicken Windows has utilities to repair file corruption; there are no such tools for Quicken Mac because its modern SQL database prevents the types of corruption the older generations of databases were prone to. So if your goal is to reduce/fix file corruption, you don't have to deal with that in Quicken Mac.

And that's the primary reason Quicken Mac doesn't have a feature for splitting a data file — the developers didn't think it was needed. (They may eventually build such a feature for other reasons users have expressed for wanting to jettison old payees, categories, etc.)

If you were bound and determined to split your file, you'd have to jump through a bunch of hoops to duplicate the file and then manually remove data from the banking (but not investment) accounts in one or both files. And since you'd be still using the same database file, you wouldn't be escaping any issues deep in your database anyway! 😀

so what could be causing occasional random disconnected transfers and infrequent random transactions deletions

So glad the developers know what is best for the user. How about creating a requirements database, letting customers add features they want added, then let them vote on what they want. Developers are clueless as to what customers want.

@SteveG That's exactly what the Product Ideas section of this forum is: a place for users to submit feature requests, to add comments, and to vote for them. There are 11 sub-categories for Quicken Mac feature requests. There are nearly 600 Idea threads there, but only a few dozen which have a large number of votes. If there's a feature you want to see in Quicken Mac, there's probably an Idea thread for it, and you should add your vote and your voice. (And if one doesn't exist for the feature you'd like to see, create a new Idea thread.)

Regarding the topic here, there's an Idea thread for such a feature. Be sure to visit it and add your vote:
