Closed account still shows up in 'Transfers' subcategories for linked transfers

Options

I have an account that I have marked as 'Closed'. See picture 1.
In Display Options, I see that 'Hide in transaction entry lists' is checked (as it should be) and greyed out (as it should be). See picture 2.

However, I still see this account in the 'Transfers > List of Accounts'. It should not show up here since it is closed (and 'Hide in Transactions entry lists' is ON as indicated above).

Note: I don't want to hide this account in the accounts list even though it is closed - I still need to refer to it now and then. (This was a case where I was forced to close a checking account and re-open another one due to attempted check-theft fraud.)

One thing you can do that will help, but not eliminate the issue, is to rename the closed account to begin with "ZZZ". That will at least cause it to sort to the bottom of the list and out of the way.

@veegee - none of my closed accounts show in the Transfers category list. This is true even if I show the closed accounts in the Account List. I remember a discussion about this in the past, and the determining factor is when the account was set up. If you set up a new account in Quicken and then close it, it will not show up in the Transfers category list. If the closed account had been set up a while ago, it will probably show up in the Transfers category list even though it's closed.

The reason why none of my closed accounts show up in the Transfers Category list is that I routinely rebuild my data file, so my accounts and data are being created by a "newer" version of Quicken.

Since this has come up so many times over the years (I wish they would fix it!), and I'm getting tired of answering it I have made this FAQ for it:

@QuickUserPSP , @Chris_QPW , thanks for your responses. I wish they would fix it too. IMO, the closed account should not show up when creating/entering_into_register. But it should not invalidate any previously existing transfers to/from the closed account.

@QuickUserPSP Curious about 're-build the data file'. How does one go about doing that? What are possible side effects of doing that?

@veegee yes this only is about visibility on the lists, thankfully it has never affected the actual transfers.

@veegee - on a very high level, it is creating a new data file "shell" and then downloading the data in your current data file and uploading to your new data file. It's like doing a conversion from Quicken to Quicken. One of these days I need to write up some procedures (with Quicken's approval of course). It is involved because the QIF file export file and import process is a bit "broken" so a lot of the process becomes manual. There are a lot of data to convert, more than just accounts and transactions. Bills & Income reminders, Security settings that are not downloadable, and Account Type issues, are some of the issues.

I wish Quicken had a streamlined process to create a new data file and transfer data from your old data file to the new data file. This would fix a lot of the "corrupted" data file issues. Or at least, create an easier process to upload data from spreadsheets or text files, bypassing the need for a QIF file.

@QuickUserPSP , thanks. I hope you have an idea/suggestion posted for this, and hope that it will get implemented.

This is how I have done it in the past.

It is worth note that QFX export/import is getting closer to working right.

It now at least knows about investment transactions and has even worked on data files with "simple investment transactions", but that doesn't include mine.

@Chris_QPW , does it change transfers to categories on both sides of linked transfers? And you do this one account at a time to the new data file? Or all at once? Never done this type of data transfer myself.

It changes all transfers into standard categories. Basically, Quicken is terrible at "relinking" transfers when importing a QIF file and as such the only way I have got it to work is by changing them all to regular categories. This is a onetime thing.

There are other weaknesses of importing QIF like the fact that it has no syntax for security lots so everything will be treated as FIFO, and it won't be right for open options. And any "investment wizard" kind of operation. And then the basics like saved reports, online services, … will not transfer.

@Chris_QPW , thanks. I think I will avoid this for the moment.
Overall, to me, it looks like Quicken might not be migrating data properly during program upgrades. Or handle older versions of data designs properly in the new versions. Either way, I don't expect it is anything that will be fixed anytime soon, so I will just move on.
