Installed Quicken Classic for Mac 7.7.1 and cannot find the backup file
I use Quicken almost daily closiing and openin the program to be sure it gets backed up. I also update regularly. I just updated to 7.7 and when I did the setup screen asked me if I wanted to convert an old file. I have tried to find a backup file and the newest ones on my mac are from 2019. Where did my data go?

The View/Restore Backups command on the File menu should show you where Quicken is currently storing backups. The default location for backups is in /Users/<your user name>/Library/Application Support/Quicken/Backups.

First, you shouldn't need to convert an old file to update to Quicken 7.7. It sounds like Quicken lost track of the location of your most recent live file — a file ending in ".quicken", rather than ".quickenbackup".
Finding live Quicken data files and Quicken backup files can be tricky (a) if you moved them from Quicken's default location and don't know where you have them, or (b) because the default location is hidden by default in macOS.
The default location is inside your User account's Library folder. To look there, in the Finder hold down the Option key and pull down the Go menu to select Library. Then open Application Support, and within that, the Quicken folder. Your data file(s) will be in the Documents folder; your backups will be in the Backups folder.
If you're not sure that's where your files are, a comprehensive way to search is in the Finder using the Find command. In the Find window, select "System files" = "are included", click the "+" sign, and "File extension" = ".quicken":
Review the .quicken files which are found, looking at the Date Modified for one the last time you used Quicken before the 7.7 update. You can double-click it, and. it should say it's updating the database for a few seconds, and then you'll be back in business.
To search for your backup files, to the same thing and change it to "File extension" = ".quickenbackup".

It's not just the backup files. It won't load my current data file. I tried many backups and even "restored" my data file after performing the recent upgrade and got this. Any ideas? Am I the only one?
