How do I reset the Downloaded Transaction Window so it autosizes?

If you ever resize the Downloaded Transactions window, it stops auto sizing based on the screen. I don't recall why I did this, but the issue is, when I use my laptop detached from the external monitor, all the buttons the bottom of the window are hidden and you must minimize the window and open it back up to get them to reappear - and that's a pain!

As you can see from the picture, the window is larger than normal. Manually resizing the window to the "normal" size does not work and trying to double click on the resizing bar also does not work.

Jiggle the height of the downloaded transaction tab, as follows, to make it more or less tall:

When screen resolution changes … I don't really know how well Quicken handles that, but just changing the height a little should make it recalculate the size so that the buttons fit within the window again.

Thanks UKR. I've tried resizing the window as you suggest and that does not resolve the issue.

How often do you change between monitors? Are your monitors using different screen resolution?

If you resized the tab in one account, Quicken should remember that setting between sessions. You may (will?) have to repeat that for every account register.

Other than those suggestions … let's wait and see if more community users chime in with their experiences.

With external monitor connected you might try this and see how the laptop reacts :

To toggle between a laptop screen and an external monitor on Windows, you can press the Windows logo key + P to select a display option. From there, you can choose to:

    • PC screen only: See things on only one display
    • Duplicate: See your desktop across multiple screens
    • Extend: See everything on the second display only

You can also right-click on your desktop and select Display settings to see your available monitors as numbered boxes. From there, you can change the default setting of duplicate these displays to extend these displays. If you want to close your laptop and still use the external monitor, you can open Control Panel to Power Options and choose what closing the lid does. Under Plugged in, next to When I close the lid, select Do nothing. However, choosing Do nothing for On battery can quickly drain your battery when you disconnect from the wall.

Windows 11 (2 separate computers)..... Quicken Premier.. HAVE USED QUICKEN CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1985.

    Hello @Stan Simmons,

If the above suggestions don't work, then it's possible the issue is file specific. If you use more than one Quicken file, are you seeing this issue in all of the files, or just in one of them? If this is affecting just one file, then to check for possible file issues, I suggest that you try validating and/or super validating your data file.  Please save a backup file prior to performing these steps.

    Validate:

    1. File
    2. Validate and Repair File...
    3. Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, proceed to Super Validate. If the issue is resolved after performing validation, then please disregard the instructions to Super Validate.

    Super Validate:

    1. File
    2. Hold CTRL + Shift and click Validate and Repair File...
    3. Super Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

Please let me know how it goes!

It seems to me people are misunderstanding this statement:

If you ever resize the Downloaded Transactions window, it stops auto sizing based on the screen.

If I got it right the statement is that if you have never changed the Downloaded Transactions windows/tab when you change the size of your main windows/register window it will automatically resize. But once you do change it, it will stay are that fixed size and not change based on the register/main window's size.

Do have the problem statement correct?

If so, I can state that this is the "expected behavior".

And it is in fact, one of the "tug-a-war" kind of things that go on in GUI design/user expectations.

Before you set the size of a window it will resize automatically given that has been setup when creating it. But once you have set the size, by definition you have told the program to save the size and restore it whenever it comes up again.

What would be needed to change this behavior is a setting that allows the user to tell the program to forget the saved size.

Quicken Windows doesn't have such a setting, it would have to be a new feature request. To do so you submit an idea post by going to the Home page on this forum and select New Post → New Idea.

Note that there have been similar requests in the past that are probably long ago archived because they didn't get enough votes basically saying that Quicken should be better and resizing when on different screens. That is easy to say, but very hard to actually even quantify what would need to be changed, let alone do it.

    Kristina,

I've done all the validation with no change in behavior. This has been going on for several years - so through many upgrades of my quicken and multiple computers and impacts all files created in quicken (there have been several).

@Chris_QPW - you have the behavior correct and I get once I have resized the window I've told the system I want something different. The issue is there is no way to reset it. I was hoping there was a solution that I was not aware of since this is a significant pain. In addition to the buttons not being visible, they often aren't even available until you minimize and then re-open the window (using the > nest to Downloaded Transaction).

Seems like a miss that you don't stumble on until you resize the window and then you are stuck. I would consider it a bug vs. a new feature and based on the lack of others having the issue, I doubt there are enough people seeing it as an issue to get a change implemented.

@Quicken Kristina - Your note implies that what I am observing is not expected behavior. Am I reading that correctly? Would you agree with @Chris_QPW or do you think there is a file issue?

I definitely consider the "not showing of buttons" to be a bug. I don't use the Downloaded Transactions tab these days, but I definitely remember that being a bug in it.

The not being able to change back to dynamic sizing I would sort of consider a feature request.

    Thank you for your replies,

I suggested it may be file-specific since I wasn't able to replicate what you were describing. If @Chris_QPW is able to replicate what you're seeing, then I agree with his assessment.

    Thank you!

I just tried to reproduce this, but I can't because I can't get it to automatically size even in a new data file.

In the new data file, no matter what resolution or Windows scaling or such I picked the Downloaded Transactions tab was already at a fixed size of about 4 lines.
