"Amazon" renaming without a rule?
Running into an issue - some of my Amazon transactions are being renamed, but I don't have a renaming rule setup for it. What am I doing wrong?
First image shows that I have a transaction labeled "Amazon" and if I hover over it, it shows that it was renamed.
Second image shows my renaming rules - note there is none for Amazon. I don't want the transaction to be renamed. Fortunately I can un-rename it, but I don't want it to happen in the first place.
How do I keep Quicken from doing this?
Classic for Windows, latest version, super-verified my file without issues, Windows 11.

Is it possible that "Amazon" is not the trigger word here, but some other word in the Payee such as "Marketplace" that is causing it? Look closely at the rest of the Renaming Rules.
Also check in Preferences→Downloaded Transactions that "Automatically apply Quicken's suggested name to payee" is not checked.

You might want to try doing the following: Tools > Renaming Rules > Do-Not-Rename Rules tab > Add a rule > If the payee contains > Amazon > OK.
I have never used this before but it seems that it should resolve the issue for you. If you try this, please be sure to post the results back here so we can know how well this worked for you.

@splasher Thanks for the ideas. I was looking for some "automatic" stuff. Unfortunately, my setup already has that field unchecked.
As for the other rules, as you can see in my second image, I don't have anything like that setup. The word "Marketplace" has no rename rule associated with it, neither does "Amazon" in any form. Is there some other location such rules might be that I'm missing?
@Boatnmaniac I thought about trying this, but I would prefer to fix the source of the problem. Still, I'll give that a try… it will be a while before I can prove anything out, since I don't have Amazon transactions every day (at least I try not to!)

The suggestion I'd make should affect Amazon payee downloads only and should not affect any other payees.
But if you want to explore other things that could be possibly causing this, I would start with: Edit > Preferences > Downloaded transactions > if the box for "Automatically apply Quicken's suggested name to payee" is checked, uncheck it > OK. Note that unchecking this box will apply this setting to ALL downloaded payees, not just to Amazon.

As I mentioned in the previous reply - that box was already unchecked for me…

Do you use Sync to Mobile/Web?
If so, it is possible that it has renamed the payee.

No, I don't use mobile/web syncing. Laptop-only.

In that case, I have no idea why Quicken is doing this.

Yeah, me neither… that's why I'm looking for ideas!
I appreciate all the ideas provided… very weird that this is happening at all.
Are renaming rules stored in some text file or something? In other words, can I see if there is a corrupted or orphaned rename rule in some setting file somewhere?

No, as far as I know the renaming rules are in the data file. About the only things I can think of is trying Validate and Repair, and purposely put in some renaming rules to see if they will kick in, instead of what is happening.

I did a validate and a super-validate. All came up clean.
I did put in the do-not-rename recommended before, so we'll see if that helps. Still, weird to have it happen at all, since I have no such rule in there right now.

I have tried "do not rename" in the past and it didn't seem to work for me. Hopefully it would be better for you.
I just have a couple of renaming rules.

I've seen this type of renaming situation in my files before, too, but it's been a while and I can't remember all the troubleshooting steps that I'd taken, one of which ended up resolving the issue. For some reason, though, deleting the multiple listings of the Payee (and all variations thereof) from the Memorized Payee List kind of sticks in my head as being what fixed it. Then, again, I'm getting older and my memory is not as sharp as it used to be so maybe I'm just imagining it.

With only two renaming rules at wouldn't be too much of a problem to delete both of them and recreate them and see if that helps.

Agreed, let me try deleting both existing rules. I've done that now, and I removed the DNR (do not rename) rule. So I now have no rules of any kind.
I'll leave it like this and see what happens next cycle… if that fixes it, then I'll re-create my other rules and see if the problem comes back or not.
Thanks for the ideas… we'll get to the bottom of this!

Ok, so I tried deleting the renaming rules, so they are gone. I also removed the DNR rule. And I have the "Automatically Apply" checkbox turned off… yet it's still happening. Here's an example of the issue:
As you can see, the payee shows up as "Amazon" and when I hover the mouse, it says it was renamed in the popup message. I can un-rename it with a right-click, but I don't want it to do this at all… and I'm trying to stop it from happening.
I'll put the DNR rule in place this time, and see if that helps… but this is kinda annoying!

I don't know. It really shouldn't be doing that. Looks like a bug to me.

Ok, just weird that only I have the bug
Either way, I can report it… does anyone know how to do this effectively? I have reported things in the past and never gotten any response or progress. (I have another bug I can report, but I reported that ages ago and still nothing…)

Reporting a bug via the in program Help menu is a one way report, the user never gets a response. It is used to spot trending issues and provide some information that might help them spot a trend.
The only real way to report a problem and hopefully get a response is by contacting support at
. I'd try my best to get it escalated past the front line helpdesk folks if they don't come up with a solution quickly.-splasher using Q continuously since 1996
