Changed from Win to Mac, register totally confusing now

I recently went to an Apple Mac, Sequoia 15.0.1, running Quicken Classic 7.10.1. I find using the single line register very confusing.

… I wrote notes on individual entries in the Windows version (flagged with different colors) that I cannot find in the Mac register.

…I also much prefer the 2 line entry format in the register in Windows, that I cannot seem to get in the Mac version. How can I modify the register and make it 2 lines?

If you are not showing a balance column then you might first need to select an individual account in the side bar.

You can't get a running balance unless it's sorted by date. Click the DATE column heading to sort by date. And for Mac click on "Reset Filters" at the top of the register-some filters prevent the balance from showing.

You can't have a 2 line register in Quicken Mac. Also, Quicken Mac has just a single Memo/Notes column; if you're not seeing it you can enable it by clicking on the Columns button in the lower right while viewing the register.

Also, there's a suggestion for Quicken to have a 2 line register like Windows, you can vote for it here.

Hi Jon, thanks for the quick responses. I do have the Memo/Notes column enabled, but there was a different area on windows Quicken that allowed me to write a paragraph or so, with different colored flags to indicate importance. The flagged area for these notes was in a box on line 2, directly below the date. There was a flag to write notes, and a 'paper clip' to add attachments. I can see the memos that I wrote in the windows version, in the memos/notes column as discussed. But I am not able to find the 'flagged' notes in this iOS version. Is it accessible anywhere?

I just cast my vote for a 2 line register! In comparison, I find the iOS version of Quicken much bulkier and not as user friendly. Perhaps its because I am so used to the windows version, having been a user since the late 80's or early 90's. But I definitely find the Windows version was so much easier to use.

    Regards,
    Rand

There's no such thing in Quicken Mac, so unless they put in the Memo field it's probably gone.

Ugh. I was afraid that was the case. 😖 I'll have to go in to my old windows PC and write out all the notes into the iOS version by hand then. Bummer.

    Thanks,

For most people who switch form Quicken Windows (or the old legacy Quicken 2007 for Mac), there are always things user don't like about Quicken Mac shortly after switching because it's different and all the years of muscle memory are disrupted. Over time, for most people, some of the design/user interface of Quicken Mac will grow more familiar and not as bad as it did at first. Many Quicken users report they grow to like the modern user interface. But of course, if there are functional features simply missing in Quicken Mac, it's understandable why that would remain as a negative.

The single line versus two-line display is something almost everyone switching to Quicken Mac has an immediate negative reaction to. Even though I came from the legacy Quicken Mac 2007, it had a two-line display similar to Quicken Windows, and my first reaction was negative. Over a little time, I came to appreciate the flexibility in the single line display (show/hide columns, adjust column order, adjust column width) and that it was easier to skim a screenful of data because there weren't alternating rows of different fields. Now, on the rare occasions I look at the old Quicken Mac or Quicken Windows, I find the two-line display as jarring as I initially found the one-line display. 😂 I'm not saying you will follow the same path; I'm only suggesting you give it some time, try to adapt to the new look, and see how you feel after a few months.

As a lifelong Mac user, I'm not familiar with "flagged notes" that you're describing, and I can't recall any other Quicken Windows-to-Quicken Mac switchers having mentioned this feature before. If you'd like, you could create an "Idea" post to request this functionality in Quicken Mac. To do so, navigate on this site to Product Ideas > Ideas for Mac Classic, select a category (such as Display/UI), and then click the large blue New Idea button on the upper right. Describe the feature/functionality as clearly as you can. (If you could post a screenshot form Quicken Windows to illustrate that this looks like, that would be great.) Once an Idea has been posted, it is open for other users to add their votes in favor of it, as well as add comment/discussion about the feature; if/when the Idea reaches a threshold of votes (currently 30 for Quicken Mac Ideas), it is forwarded to the Quicken Mac development team for consideration. If they agree to implement the feature, once they identify a time slot for it on their development calendar, the status of the Idea will be changed to "Planned".

You might want to add your vote to an existing Idea thread for being able to flag transactions by assigning a color to transactions you want to flag:

@RandTor - An option you might want to consider if you do not like QMac and and would prefer to continue using QWin: Install a VM software on your Mac and then you can install Windows and run QWin in that environment. I am not real familiar with the various VM softwares but one example is Parallels (which costs money and which some are currently having some issues with) but there are others, including free ones.

If this is something you would like to explore I'm pretty sure that there are some Mac users who could provide you with some insights and assistance on this.

I'm seriously considering firing up my 7 year old Windows PC to use for Quicken only. I feel like I'm having to do 2-3 extra steps for transaction entries with the Mac.

Another missing feature that I find particularly unsettling, there is NO running balance in the checking register. It is an option in the savings register but is not an option in the checking register. I don't understand why I can't have an ongoing balance column. Am I the only "covert" from windows to see this??

Volvogirl… thank you! Quick answer and exactly right. I couldn't understand why I lost it, but there it is back gain. Much appreciated :-)

If you want to walk through what steps you're doing and where it seems like multiple extra steps, we might be able to suggest alternatives in Quicken Mac which you may not be aware of.
