Prior ending statement date

I had trouble reconciling my credit card this morning. It wasn't capturing the cleared but un-reconciled transactions. I noticed that the 'prior ending statement date' was not correct and I had no way to correct it. So I went ahead and manually reconciled those transactions that cleared AFTER my last statement but before this incorrect ending statement date.

After reconciling I noticed it set the ending date to today's date and NOT to the actual statement ending date that I put in the window which was the 17th. See example. What is going on?

  • Oh, I have already run a file validation. Didn't fix the issue.

    Hello @Steve Sprauer,

Are you manually updating the account or is it connected online? Is this the first time you have seen this issue? Did anything occur before this issue began? Have you received any error codes or messages?

    Let me know!

  • Everything is done manually. This is the first time I've seen the issue and the only thing I can think that may have changed is the monthly or so Quicken updates. No error codes or messages. It simply puts the statement ending date as today and I can't then change it to do my latest reconcile.

You can reverse an account reconciliation in Quicken, but it requires a few steps. Here’s how you can do it:

    1. Open the Account Register: Go to the account you reconciled.
    2. Select Transactions: Highlight the reconciled transactions you want to reverse. You can do this by holding the Shift key while clicking on the first and last transactions in the range you want to change.
    3. Change Reconciliation Status: Right-click on the selected transactions and choose
    4. Reconcile Status. Change the status from "R" (Reconciled) to "C" (Cleared) or leave it blank.
    5. Redo Reconciliation: After changing the status, you'll need to redo the reconciliation process for those transactions.

Alternatively, if you have a backup of your Quicken file from before the reconciliation, you can restore that backup and start the reconciliation process from there.

    Thank you for your reply,

When I tested in my Quicken, I saw something similar. The pattern I noticed was that if I did a reconcile where there were items to reconcile, then the next time I opened the reconcile window, it displayed today's date as the prior ending statement date.

I forwarded this issue to the proper channels to be further investigated. In the meantime, if you'd like to contribute to the investigation, please navigate to Help > Report a problem and submit a problem report with log files attached.

While you will not receive a response through this submission, these reports will help our teams in further investigating the issue. The more problem reports we receive, the better.

While waiting for this issue to be corrected, I did find a work around. If you do a reconcile where Quicken sees no items to reconcile, that will cause the program to see the New Statement Ending date that you put in as the prior ending statement date when you initiate another reconcile.

    We apologize for any inconvenience!

    Thank you.

I tried again today without the attachment and it went through. It must not have liked the .jpg file I had attached.

I have had the same issue and have no way to resolve itl

I have the same problem. When I attempt to reconcile a credit card account, instead of the date of the prior statement the program uses the date the account was last reconciled.

This always happens when I reconcile my credit card account, manually.

Quicken HELP states that the only transactions considered for reconciliation are those which occurred during the current statement period. But since Quicken automatically inputs the wrong date for the date of the last statement (mis identifying the date ot the last reconcilation instead of the actual date of the the prior statement) that means that any transaction that occurred between these two dates is not being considered for reconciliation.

    Thank you for your reply,

Did you try the work-around I suggested earlier? When the issue is triggered and it shows today's date as the last reconcile date, go ahead a do a reconcile with no uncleared items to review, and make sure to put the correct statement ending date in the New Statement Ending textbox.

When you click OK, you will see a message saying there are no uncleared items to reconcile. Go ahead and dismiss that message, then start your reconcile again. It should now show the correct statement ending date.

    I hope this helps!

Quicken Help that I find for reconciling cash flow / spending accounts to a "paper statement" states:

    • Which transactions are considered for reconciliation? The transactions that are not yet cleared and are in the statement period, and the transactions that are cleared but the posting date is in the statement period, are considered for reconciliation.

While not exactly the same, those are very close.

I think the Help statement is inaccurate. It would be better to say that all transactions prior to the "Ending Statement Date" (ESD) are considered for reconciliation. In that context, "all transactions prior" becomes all transactions not yet cleared and prior to the ESD and all cleared transactions with a posting date prior to the ESD. What Quicken shows for the "Prior statement ending date" is not relevant as far as I can tell (I am also not seeing that phrase in my current look-see).

Thank you for your reply @q_lurker,

I sent your feedback on the Quicken Help article to our content team.

When I tested it, the prior statement ending date doesn't seem to impact which transactions show up in the reconcile window. However, it should not be showing an incorrect date, and the bug has been reported.

    Thank you!
