Word of warning, CapOne is now including pending transactions in credit card downloads

I noticed yesterday that CapOne is including pending transactions in their Web Connect (.QFX) file downloads for their credit cards. This has now happened with two different accounts.

Luckily, both of these transactions were from businesses were not bills like at restaurants where there is an initial hit and then a final which includes a tip, so they will not change when they change from pending to final.

There is no obvious way to keep this from happening.

As I stated in the OP, these are Web Connect (.QFX) downloads. The controls on pending downloads is for EWC/EWC+ download connections.

There is no indication in Quicken that the .QFX downloaded transactions are pending. The only way to know that they are pending is what is shown on the CapOne website.

I download so very little with WC that I wasn't sure if the pending controls are applicable to it. Thanks for clarifying.

I have 2 CapOne credit cards but one hasn't been used in months and the other has no pending transactions. Looks like I might have to make 1-2 purchases and then use WC to see what I get downloaded.

a QFX file is the response that would’ve been sent as if direct connect had requested transactions. So basically everything that connect as far as how deal with transactions that have been downloaded the same. So those are as cleared. Not because they’re such a status in the OFX data, but because that’s what quicken does with downloaded transactions.

What is it about pending transactions in EWC/EWC+ downloads that causes them to be identified in Quicken as pending instead of simply being added as C transactions like what is being done with the CapOne WC downloads? There must be something different about the pending transactions data between the different connection methods and that makes me wonder why that difference couldn't also be included in the WC downloads.

But here is a hint. Direct Connect, Web Connect don't flow through Quicken Inc or Intuit servers.

Yeah, I understand that but I would certainly like to understand it better. There must be something in that EWC/EWC+ data that identifies what is pending vs what is posted. It would be nice to know what that is and why that can't or hasn't also been factored into DC and WC downloads, as well, so the pending transactions included in CapOne's WC can be either flagged as pending or can be filtered out.

I suppose this CapOne WC issue should probably be reported to Quicken so they can review it and determine what perhaps can and will be done to resolve it. The status quo, IMO, is not acceptable. Maybe @splasher will do that if it hasn't been done already?

There might be something in the Quicken Cloud log that identifies the transactions, but I haven't looked.

Let me backup and state something that might not be obvious.

When @splasher says that his Web Connect import is including pending transactions, he means that he knows that they are pending, not that Quicken knows that they are pending. There isn't anything in the QFX file that is telling Quicken that a given set of transactions or "pending".

The same would be true of Direct Connect.

When we talk about the new Quicken pending feature, Quicken separates those transactions out from regular transactions because it knows that they are pending. These two aren't the same thing. Even though it has been pretty rare, it isn't unknown for a financial institution to include pending transactions in the downloads even though the "rules" say to only include the posted transactions.

Now as to how Express Web Connect and Express Web Connect + are identifying the pending transactions. Well, first off, Express Web Connect + is using a different protocol and it certainly could have the pending transactions identified. And in the case of Express Web Connect they might be able to pick up that information from whatever format a given financial institution is giving them for the download.

I do believe though, that most of this is determined on the Quicken server, not in Quicken (the program) itself.

But like I said, Quicken Inc almost never tells us any of the details of how anything works.

Yes, I understand all that. That's why I suggested that this WC issue be reported to Quicken. They need to work with Intuit and/or CapOne to determine why the WC file is including pending transactions and what can and should be done to either keep the pending transactions out of the WC file or to somehow flag those pending transactions as pending. Whether that is a QFX file management process on CapOne's server or on Intuit's server or on Quicken's server or in the Quicken software or some combination thereof is something only they can determine.

I quickly read the comments, so pardon me if this happens to be mentioned. There is a selection within Quicken that allows or disallows pending transactions. I tried using pending, but did not like it during reconciliation, so I turned off pending transactions. You can find the option within Preferences. (from the top menu, Edit / Preferences)

Those settings do not have any bearing on the contents of the Web Connect (.QFX) file that is manually downloaded from the financial institution's website.

This has happened before with Capital One, it went away and has now returned.

I made the OP just to warn other users that CapOne is up to it again. The biggest downside to this issue is that the online balance (which doesn't include pending) then doesn't agree with what you see in the Quicken register.

Splasher - regarding your last sentence, that is exactly why I turned pending transactions off within Quicken preferences.

Suggestion, I’d make sure that is turned off in your Quicken preferences.

Also, is your Quicken set to allow you to review / match / delete transactions before accepting them into your register?

FYI - My CapOne Credit Card is set the Express Web Connect+. Any reason why you are manually using the QFX, vs Auto Download?

Any reason why you are manually using the QFX, vs Auto Download?

I have no desire to have my financial information on the aggregation provider's (Intuit) or Quicken's servers, so I only use Direct Connect or Web Connect download methods. I also will never use desktop Quicken companion online apps (QMobile & QWeb).

A side benefit is that I also run QW2013 in parallel to subscription Quicken and the .QFX files can be converted to .QIF files (using ImportQIF) for import into QW2013. The DC download is from my brokerage and I don't track it in QW2013.

I don’t quite understand a portion of what you said. Isn't Direct Connect the other method, separate from using a QFX file. Whether we like it or not, our information is likely on the Financial Institutions Back-Office Quicken Servers, based on the connection method. I’ve worked quite a bit with the Back-Office IT personnel at UBS. I too, will not use the Quicken companion apps, as I don’t like/need that and don’t want my information there. Thanks for including the side benefit; although, I have opened old Quicken Data Files with newer versions of Quicken. Just curious, what is your reasoning for running QW2013 in parallel to subscription Quicken?

Thank you for letting us know this is happening. I don't usually update my Capital One account using Web Connect, but since I pay my card off in full every week on Tuesday, I should have a pending transaction to attempt to replicate this in a couple days.

There are three types of downloads.

Web Connect (WC) where you manually download from the website (no data on a Quicken server)
Direct Connect (DC) where Quicken makes a direct connection to the financial institution to download the transactions and your data is never on an aggregator or Quicken server
EWC/EWC+ where the aggregator collects your information during overnight connections to aggregate your data on the aggregator's server for later collection by the Quicken program. EWC & EWC+ are variations of the same concept just using different connection methods.

2 & 3 use One Step Update to get the data into Quicken.

Whether or not the FI prepares the information for WC or DC separately from the rest of their data, it is still on THEIR server, not an aggregator/Quicken server and is behind their firewalls and secured by their cyber defenses. I either trust them or I don't, but the data isn't all over the place.

Why QW2013? It is the last version of Quicken that does not require a Quicken Id to install, register and use. If Quicken goes belly up and does not release a last version that removes the ID requirement, you are stuck with Quicken on that computer with probably never being able to move it to a new computer since you can't install/register it. I can run QW2013 as long as I have a version of Windows that it will run on and a VM running an old version Windows is not an issue since it would not need an internet connection or pose a security risk.
