Quicken hangs when I tried to stop a quote update [edited]

I clicked on a mutual fund acount to look at its current holdings and value. For the first time ever, Quicken opened a window telling me it was updating market quotes. I did not want this to occur as I needed the account value as of close of business TODAY. I clicked on the "STOP UPDATE button and waited for it to stop. The circle then appeared and began to rotate indication something was going on and to wait. It is now 30+ mionutes later and it is still rotating. Nothing I tried would terminate the update and go away so I can finish my work. I can't even do an ALT-F4 or even try to close Quicken - locked up. I am afraid to bring up the TASK MANAGER to End Task for fear of losing what I have done so far. So what to do?

Is the "automatic" quote updater a standard thing now? I am a long time Quicken user and I can not ever recall this thing popping up without me initiating it.

Thanks for any and all assistance.

Check the setting at Edit > Preferences > Investments > "Automatically update quotes every 15 minutes". This may only be available for Premier and up.

This will steal the focus from what you are doing but it should not cause Quicken to hang.

Usually transactions are entered right away so ending Quicken with the Task Manager should not cause a loss of data. If you must do that, however, I would recommend backing up your file and then running a Validate and Repair to see if it finds any problems.

I edited the title of your post to clarify the issue

If you have the box checked for "Automatically update quotes every 15 minutes" but do not remember checking that box: Have you recently updated the version of Quicken? If so, you should note that sometimes when the version of Quicken is updated one or more Preferences settings will get changed.

This is a long-standing issue that usually does not occur but it sometimes does. When it does occur there does not appear to be any pattern as to which setting(s) get changed so it is important to review all the Preferences settings. So, it is recommended to review the Preferences Settings after every time the Quicken version is updated to see if any settings corrections need to be made.
