Previously reconciled balances off by $1000's

This is the second month in a row that my checking account balance has been off by thousands of dollars. After spending hours going back through about a years worth of data I caved and made an adjustment of $12129.04 on 3/31/25 Today (4/29/25) my account was off $14349.29. What on earth?? So I deleted my past adjustment and made a new adjustment of 2220.25. If I can't trust the numbers, why am I using Quicken?? I have about 10 years of data in there and would love to be able to continue, but I can't spend hours each month figuring out where the software deleted something randomly.

    Hello @jrsummer,

    Thanks for reaching out!

Have you checked if any filters are applied in the account register that might be hiding transactions? Have you spotted any duplicate or missing entries around the dates when things go off? Are the discrepancies showing up after syncing with mobile or web? Do they seem tied to specific payees, categories, or account transfers?

    Let me know!

I can assure you @jrsummer that what you're describing is exteremely unusual… or you'd see this Community filled with posts like yours.

What @Quicken Jasmine suggests is the most likely … that a filter might be applied and needs to be cleared.

Another possibility is that Quicken automatically added an Adjustment that is causing and/or compounding the problem. This can happen if converting a file from Windows to Mac. Scroll to the bottom of that unfiltered account register to the earliest date and see if there is an Adjustment entry there. (If you have a full keyboard, you can press the 'end' key to jump there; 'home' jumps to the top.)

Yet another possibility is that there is a Transfer type transaction that accidentally (or due to some renaming) used the account in question as the source/destination. But that should have shown up during the reconciliation unless dated in a prior period.

PS. Just to confirm - you are using the current release of QMac 8.1.2 (or 8.2 which is just rolling out)?

I checked the filters and the only one I had on was dates - just to show this year's data. I cleared the filters and nothing changed. When this happened last month, I went back through the reconciled balances to January 2023 and whatever went wrong was before that. I have been using Quicken FOREVER and never had a problem so I assumed it was some update issue. Is there a way to archive prior years and set a firm 1/1 starting balance? Just so I don't have old transactions messing me up? The big problem was in my checking account, but I had a smaller $300ish error in one of my credit card accounts. I only bothered tracing that one back a year before giving up and making an adjustment. I haven't reconciled that one yet this month - I will do that today to see if there are more problems in that one.

I track 8-9 accounts in Quicken and they all have balanced to the penny every single month for 10+ years until last month.

Did you have to reactivate or reauthorize the checking account recently?
It's possible that your account's Opening Balance transaction may have been messed up by that process and needs to be reset to the correct amount it originally was.

Are there downloaded transactions in your account register which Quicken should have been able to match/merge with already existing register transactions, but for some reason didn't match/merge? That means you now have duplicate transactions.

OTOH, did a downloaded transaction get mistakenly matched/merged with a prior register transaction, so you now are missing what should have become a new transaction?

    I'd check for these possibilities.

If you look at Accounts > Reconciliation History for the problematic account, it should show you exactly which reconciliation started having an error, and opening that reconciliation should tell you why Quicken thinks this old reconciliation is now off — transactions deleted or added.

This is happening to me also. I have used Quicken since 1993 …. never had reconciliation issues. Last month off by hundreds. I looked at reconciliation history and found a few transactions were deleted from a few years ago. Re-created them and had 100% clean reconciliation. This month … one account off by thousands! I looked at reconciliation history and have 16 discrepancies and 16 deleted transactions from 3 years ago! Something is going on… I did not delete these transactions! My Quicken use has been pretty basic, no merges or any unusual actions. Quicken has never been this unstable.

Another account off by $2825.89 today when I reconciled it. This is the 3rd account impacted. I went through the reconciliation histories for all 3 accounts and the discrepancies are showing up in April or May of 2022. So it has definitely lost something old. If this was a one time adjustment, I would just log it and move on. But this is two months in a row where the discrepancy changed in 2 accounts and now a 3rd account had an issue. If this shows up in my May reconciliations, I will be switching to different software.

Do any of you who are reporting these problems use the Quicken Cloud? That is, do you have Sync turned on (in Settings > Mobile, Web & Alerts), which enables use of the mobile app or web interface?

When I read about users having older transactions deleted, my first thought — without proof — is to point a finger at Quicken Cloud for somehow deleting past transactions.

Yes, I have Sync turned on, but it has been on for a long time. The deleted transactions have been a recent occurrence. Seems like since updating to Mac OS Sequoia.

@macpow While it's possible there is a bug in macOS Sequoia, or Quicken's software for updating the database when installing a program update, those seem less likely to me than some issue with Quicken Cloud.

My suggestion would be to disable all transaction data in Quicken Cloud* if you can live without the mobile app/web interface, at least for a while in order to see if that makes the problems go away.

*To clean your Quicken Cloud transaction data, you must do two things: (1) go to Settings > Mobile, Web & Alerts and turn Sync to Off; (2) go to Settings > Connected Services and click the Cloud Account Reset button. The latter deletes your existing cloud account and creates a new one (every Quicken data file has an associated cloud account, even if not used for syncing transactions), while the first insures no transactions will be synced from your desktop data file to the new cloud file.

P.S. As a data point of one, I run my live and test files on two Macs running macOS Sequoia, with Sync always off, and I have never experienced a problem with older transactions spontaneously being deleted and creating out of balance prior reconciliations.

Thanks. We'll give that a shot.
