Incorrect Temporary Social Security Deduction for Seniors

Frank Hartman

My Standard Tax Deduction, within the Tax Planner, went from $46,700 to $34,700 with Release 64.23, which is exactly the amount of the "Senior Bonus Deduction. WHY?!?!? See below.

It STILL has NOT been Corrected.

Beginning in tax year 2025, a new temporary deduction is available for seniors that provides up to $6,000 in additional tax relief, depending on your income. This "senior bonus deduction" is in addition to the long-standing special standard deduction for those aged 65 and older. This new deduction, part of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" passed in July 2025, does not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits but can significantly lower or eliminate the tax liability for many seniors by reducing their overall taxable income. The new senior bonus deduction (2025–2028)For tax years 2025 through 2028, individuals who are age 65 or older by the end of the year can claim the following:

  • $6,000 deduction for single filers.
  • $12,000 deduction for a married couple filing jointly, where both spouses are 65 or older.

    Hello @Frank Hartman,

Thank you for coming to the Community to provide your feedback. Our teams are aware of an issue where the new senior bonus deduction was not being calculated correctly and they are working to resolve the issue. We do not have an ETA, but the issue should be corrected in a future update.

    Thank you!

    Hello Moderator,

Today marks two months since Frank Harman opened this Senior Tax Deduction programming error discussion. Users still wait for the FIX.

I agree with your comment that "Unfortunately, our teams do not provide ETAs." That kind of target resolution and Priority Level would help Q Users plan and also instill confidence that the problem is actively being addressed.

As one of many very long-term Quicken subscribers, this year has been particularly challenging with multiple, time-consuming Quicken problems, poor communication about updates (not your personal fault, I know), and corrective action delays. What is the target release of this Senior Tax Deduction solution?

The moderators can’t provide what has not been given to them. It is Quicken Inc’s policy (like Intuit before them) not to give out such information. And I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised if it doesn’t exist even in the development group. As in no date, more like a list of things to work on in some order. And that order is subject to change depending on how many more important problems come up. And that is one of the main reasons not to give out estimates. If you announce an estimate and things come up you just get complaints that you didn’t finish accord to the estimate.

When I working for a company the only target dates we had were for long term projects, not sustaining work.

Chris QPW, you’re right and I understand how short-term, changing priorities can require adjustments to staffing and target completion. Nonetheless, I’d appreciate Q's target resolution date and updates to that date to ensure that issues have not fallen off Q’s corrective action agenda. Otherwise, customers assume problems are being addressed. Sometimes, that’s not the case. For example, on related “Standard deduction for seniors updated but is wrongtopic, Moderator proactively noted that problem was marked resolved. To her credit, she noted problem persisted and notified appropriate people for investigation and resolution. Understanding that target dates change, waiting Users would like to know when fix can be expected or if it's queued.

What the Moderators can tell you is if something is still on the list to be worked upon. So, ask the question that way. They can’t give ETAs.
