Importing Investment Transactions - Not appearing in Linked Cash Account

I have imported transactions into an Investment account using the CSV import feature. The transactions correctly show in my investment account. However, they are not showing in the linked cash account. The investment transactions show the linked cash account, but the transactions are not there and I cannot reconcile. I have All Dates selected in my cash account display, so it's not a filtering issue. Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?

    In further inspecting my files, I find that the price field in the transaction is blank, so it is not showing an amount. This explains why there is no linked cash transaction….but why is the Price blank? It is populated in the CSV file.

    Hello @rrh770,

    Thank you for reaching out! To help troubleshoot, please provide more information. How do you have the CSV file formatted? How do the transactions appear when you import them into your Quicken? Are the cash transactions completely missing (not importing at all), or are they going into the investment account instead of the linked checking account?

    I look forward to your response!

    The CSV file is formatted exactly as the sample file provided. The transactions appear in the Investment Account. In my first attempt, the price values were formatted as "General" and this was resulting in no values for the transactions. They would show the Date, Security, and Shares, but the values in the transaction records were blank. I restored to a backup and then changed the Price attribute in the CSV file to a Number (using current version of Microsoft Excel). I had blanks for amount, cleared status, etc.

    Two issues resulted:

    1. No transactions were recorded in the Linked Cash Account. They were in the Investment Account, but no matching transaction was found in the Linked Cash Account.
    2. Some transactions loaded with dates in 2012…which took me a while to track down. My lot balances were off on some of the securities. When I looked, I found transactions in 2012…which was before this account was opened.

    Regarding issue 1: If I opened a transaction imported into the Investment Account and saved it, it would generate the matching transaction in the Linked Cash Account. I accidently discovered this when I was correcting some input errors on the Total in the Investment Account record and was pleased to see it created a matching transaction in the Linked Cash Account when the Investment transaction was saved. I subsequently went into each imported transaction and saved it…even if nothing was edited…and my Cash transactions are now correct. This was a pain and something I'd like to avoid in the future…

    Regarding issue 2: My best guess on what happened is that it transposed the Month and Year on transactions dated around 12/10/12 and 12/11/12. I was able to delete the incorrect transactions and manually re-entered them with the correct date. It did not do this on all transactions and seemed to be some in November as well.

    FYI: The only reason I am importing the CSV file is due to the issue with importing from Fidelity NetBenefits not yet being resolved. Quicken acts like it is importing through OneStep Update, even asking me about new securities and historical splits, but nothing appears in the list of downloaded transactions. Sure would be great if we could get that fixed….it's been a minute….

    Thanks for your help.

    Thank you for your reply,

    It is possible that the issue with transactions not downloading and the issue with CSV files not importing as expected are related. To help troubleshoot, please provide more information:

    • When did this issue with transactions not downloading start?
    • Is this affecting all of your Fidelity NetBenefits accounts?
    • You mentioned transactions from 2012. Are you trying to download older transactions, or is this issue also happening with recent transactions?

    If you haven't already done so, please troubleshoot the issue with transactions not downloading by following these steps from our article on missing transactions/transactions not downloading:

    Be sure to follow these steps in order:

    1. Go to Edit > Preferences > Downloaded Transactions. The option Automatically add to investment transactions lists needs to be unchecked.

    automatically add to investment transaction lists.png

    2. Refresh your online account information by clicking the Actions Gear Icon on the upper right of the register, and select Update Transactions. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

    3. Confirm that the Sort Order in your account is by Date; just click the top of the Date column in your account register. It's possible the transactions are in your register, but not where you thought they'd be.

    4. Try refreshing your login session: To do this, go to Help > Refresh Sign in. After completing the log-in process, trying running a One Step Update again.

    5. Go to Tools > Account List and check Show Hidden Accounts at the bottom left. Confirm the missing transactions haven't been added to a hidden account by clicking on the name of any account that appears with a check mark in the Hidden column.

    Thank you!

    I don't think you did anything wrong. I think that this a "lack of processing" for CSV files.

    The linked checking account is a virtual account. What really happens when you download transactions into an investment transactions they go into the investment account, but there is a part of the process that pushes "cash transactions" to the linked checking account. I suspect that part of the process isn't being done for CSV files.

    @Quickin Kristina:

    Sorry for the delay. I have moved on to other tasks. This will come up again when the January Statements are provided and I again try to download. Hopefully, the bug with Fidelity not displaying downloaded transactions will finally be fixed by then…and this will be a non issue.

    If I have to download via CSV again, I will try the troubleshooting - but frankly, none of these are relevant to my stated problem. The transactions are properly loading into the Investment account. The issue is the corresponding transaction in the Linked Cash account. I can create the matching transaction by opening the Investment transaction record, and saving it. So I'm not sure that any of the troubleshoot steps provided, other than possibly #2, would have any bearing on this problem. The transactions are downloading where I expect them to down load. The issue is that the Linked Cash Account is not receiving the matching cash transaction.

    I believe there is a bug in the Downloading CSV Transactions to an Investment account routines and would ask Intuit to look into this. If I can get the matching Linked Cash transaction by manually opening and re-saving the downloaded Investment Account transaction, I would assume that Quicken should be able to do this in the post processing of the download.

    Until a fix to the error regarding displaying downloaded Fidelity Transactions, or a fix to the failure of the Import CSV for Investment account from fully post processing the transactions is fixed, I will continue to manually open and save each transaction….but this is a big pain.

    I'd be happy to provide any necessary log files for Intuit to confirm why the Linked Cash Account transaction is not being created.

    @Chris_QPW:

    I believe you are correct. This is a shortcoming in the post processing logic of the Import Investment Transactions from a CSV file command. I believe Inuit should look into this.

    Thanks.
