Why not a dynamic filter: (Include only securities with current holdings (non-zero positions)”

Feature Request: “Current Holdings Only” Filter for Investment Performance Reports

Long-time user (25+ years) with a large investment history across hundreds of securities.

In the Investment Performance report, there is currently no simple way to generate a report that includes only securities I currently hold. The available options are:

  • Include all securities ever held, or
  • Manually select individual securities (which is impractical with a large history)

Suggested enhancement:
Add a simple filter option such as:

  • “Include only securities with current holdings (non-zero position as of report end date)”

Why this matters:

  • Most users are primarily interested in evaluating current portfolio performance
  • Eliminates the need to manually maintain large security selection lists
  • Leverages data Quicken already calculates (current share balances)

This would significantly improve usability for long-time users with extensive transaction histories.

Why not simply go thru your Security List and HIDE those zero-position securities?

    MUCH simpler, and already available.

BUT, if you want to pursue your original thought, "Flag" a Mod and ask them to turn this into an Idea, which will require around 50 votes from other users before the developers will even consider it.

This might work if the report is subtotaled by Security, but if it is subtotaled by account for example, what should it do with the performance contributions from securities you no longer hold?

Also the Investment > Portfolio views already exclude securities you no longer hold unless you choose the Show closed lots option. The Avg. Annual Return (%) columns show the same IRR calculation as the Investment Performance Report.

And @NotACPA's approach of hiding old securities does not work well with the new report customization interface. With the old interface and Show hidden securities unchecked, I think Select All would only select the visible securities. With the new interface, Select All always selects all securities, hidden or not.

Most users are primarily interested in evaluating current portfolio performance

I put myself in that category, though I am not sure ‘most users’ fall into it. When I evaluate such portfolio performance for a period, I want all securities held anytime in the period included. 'No shares held at the end of the period' is not a viable criterion for selection, as @Jim_Harman commented.

Furthermore, though I do not normally look at that report subtotaled by security, I did so in the context of this request - specifically for the time period = Current Year. All of the securities listed in that subtotaled report had transactions or shares held (valued) during the period (one minor exception - a security I previously owned but that paid income during the period was included with a AAR value of NA). No securities were included that were not owned or transacted during the period. As such, as I see it, Quicken is already filtering the included securities correctly. The request by @D Naumann does not seem necessary.
