Categories "hidden" without my Knowledge

A report I have been using for years to track various 1099-R income streams reported much lower numbers this morning. I eventually found out that 2 of my 3 categories have been marked "hidden" (definitely not by me as I'm the only one who have access to this PC). Could have a recent update messed this up?

Hello @Francois,

Thank you for letting us know you encountered this issue. While rare, an update can sometimes trigger changes to settings without the user's input. Have you noticed any other unwanted changes or unusual behaviors after updating your program?

Do you keep your Quicken file directly on your local hard drive? Is it synced with any cloud services, such as OneDrive, iCloud, or Dropbox? If it's synced to any of those services, you'll see the service name in the file path. If you're not certain how to view the file path, please follow these instructions from our article on OneDrive:

1. Open Quicken and go to File > Show this file on my computer.

A File Explorer window will open, showing you the folder where your Quicken file lives.

2. Look at the address bar near the top of the File Explorer window. This shows the file path — the location of your Quicken file on your computer.

How to read the file path: It will look something like a chain of folder names separated by backslashes (\). You're looking for the word OneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox, etc., anywhere in that chain — for example: C:\Users\[your name]\OneDrive\Documents\Quicken . If you see OneDrive in the path, your file needs to be moved. Continue with Step 2.

Were you trying to input transactions, and couldn't find those categories?

Or, were you running a report and those categories weren't included.

Because hidden categories, and even hidden accounts, CAN be included in reports if you so choose.

As per my initial comments, these categories have been included in my report for years. Suddenly they became "hidden on their own". Not my doing.

@Francois the categories beginning with underscores are special categories used in tax calculations and by default, those categories are hidden.

There are a couple of reasons the categories could have been reset back to hidden.

We see complaints fairly often about program updates resetting things to default states, like unchecking preferences.

Also in versions 67.x, the report functionality that was in beta mode and optional got released and is now the default. There is a discussion about issues with this new reporting interface. Treatment of hidden categories in reports could be another issue with the new reporting.

To avoid obscure issues, it is generally best to let Quicken assign the categories that begin with underscores by using the Income and Reinvest entry dialogs rather than assigning them yourself.

But if you want those Categories to be visible for customizing reports, you can un-hide the hidden ones by going to Tools > Category list. Check the "Show hidden Categories" box at the bottom, then un-check any hidden ones you want to see.
