Estimated US Tax Quarter Periods for Reports different from fiscal

I use the Investment Income report to determine quarterly estimated taxes to pay the IRS for federal taxes and CA FTB for state taxes. Because these tax filing dates don't really line up to fiscal quarters - you can't use the "Quarter to Date" in the Date Range Dropdown.

Could Quicken consider adding the "US Tax Quarter to Date" as a new Date Range Dropdown so we're not using the Custom Dates to determine the IRS estimated tax quarterly periods?

IRS 2026 Estimated Payment Schedule

Q1 (Jan. 1 – March 31): Due April 15, 2026
Q2 (April 1 – May 31): Due June 15, 2026
Q3 (June 1 – Aug. 31): Due September 15, 2026
Q4 (Sept. 1 – Dec. 31): Due January 15, 2027

Note that you can already create Reminders with the IRS quarterly tax schedule.

Could you explain why you need a special income report for this? To avoid penalties, usually estimated tax payments are the same each quarter, based on this year's withholding and last year's total tax due.

If I recall correctly, the taxpayer has the option to compute the estimated tax payment as the year goes along. This tends to be more appropriate for some whose income and deductions vary more widely throughout the year.

I believe in making those computations, one uses income and deductions through the end of the month prior to the tax payment. Thus the 4/15 payment uses data for 1/1 through 3/31; the 6/15 and 9/15 payments consider data from 1/1 though 5/31 and 8/31 respectively. Thus I would think the Investment Income reports the user would need would all start January 1 and not be the “quarterly” style that was suggested.

This computation can also be useful when an underpayment penalty might be applicable.

If implemented, I would discourage reference as a ‘quarterly’ item preferring to see it as a US Est. Tax schedule. (Yes it irks me that the IRS calls them quarterly.)

For myself, if I needed the data which I usually do not, I would be fine customizing existing reports.

Investment Income varies from year to year and quarter to quarter due to cap gains and stock trades so it’s not linear. Would rather not overpay on estimated tax quarter when no cap gains activity. and trying to thread this needle and avoid penalties.

That is the "safe harbor" approach that most tax payers use. When your income varies significantly throughout the year, the IRS allows you to use the "annualization method" where you calculate your estimated tax based on your actual income for each period

I don't pay estimated taxes because I use only withholding to pay the annual tax liability. But I voted for this idea because I need to doublecheck from time to time to ensure that my withholdings is still enough to cover the annual tax liability or safe harbor amounts. It would be nice if the quarterly checks coincide with the actual estimated tax periods.
