I am getting duplicated pending transactions

Question

Each time I do an online update, Quicken creates a new pending transaction entry even when the entry is already listed.  If something takes a day or two to clear I end up with multiple entries for the same transaction.  Then they don't seem to clear after the transaction has finally come through.  Don't think I've changed a setting to cause this but it just recently started.

If you haven’t already done so, I suggest submitting the report through Help > Report a Problem. Our Escalations team has also requested the following additional information to help with the investigation:

* A screenshot showing the duplicate transactions in Quicken, showing the date and amount.
* A screenshot showing the corresponding pending transactions on your financial institution’s website.

Once you upload the logs, please let me know so I can add your information to the investigation.

@tejlwright what you’re seeing usually isn’t caused by a Quicken setting. It happens when the bank starts sending pre‑authorization holds or changes the transaction IDs (FITIDs) in its download feed. Each time you run One Step Update, Quicken downloads whatever the bank sends. If the bank sends a new FITID for the same pending charge, Quicken must treat it as a new transaction, so you end up with duplicates that never clear. When the final posted transaction arrives, many banks don’t send a “finalize” message for the earlier hold, so Quicken can’t match them and the extra pending entries just sit there.

Check whether “Automatically add to banking registers” is turned on.  This setting causes Quicken to pre‑create pending entries before the bank sends the posted transaction.

Go to Edit→Preferences→Downloaded Transactions

Turn off: Automatically add to banking registers.  This prevents Quicken from creating duplicates when banks send memo‑only holds.
