QM2007 TO QM2017 MIGRATION

I am trying to migrate a QM2007 file to QM2017 and file won't migrate and convert. I have QM2007 file on Drive 1 on a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard. QM2007 works perfectly there. Drive 2 on my Mac Pro running El Capitan contains QM2017 and I want to move my file to QM2017 and convert, but how can I do this? Instructions in QM2017 say to append '.QDFM.' to existing QM2007 file in caps, but this is wrong—no suffix like this will work!   Can anyone explain 'clearly' how to structure and migrate my existing QM2007 file (with 25 years of history!) to QM2017 on my Drive 2 and convert once its there!

Have you tried opening QM2017 then selecting File > New? You should get the following window. Then select to Start with a QM2007 file:

Meanwhile, you have 2 choices: Use Quicken 2017 for Mac or Quicken 2007 Lion Compatible version.I suggest that you make sure that Quicken 2017 for Mac will meet your needs, since it is not an upgrade from QM2007 but rather from Quicken Essentials (which was re-written from the ground up, starting in 2010), so there are some features that are still not there e.g. full loan amortization*, 2-line display, QuickMath, or are not as fully developed yet, e.g. Customized Reports, investment lot management, performance reports and stats (therefore some data may not carry over). You can start here:
    http://www.quicken.com/mac/compare

*NOTE: Support for fixed rate loans has been released in v4.5.x but there is no announced timing for support for variable rate or simple daily interest loans.

Currently, the main advantages of QM2017 over QM2007 include the ability to sync cash, bank, and credit card accounts using Quicken Mobile for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and the ability to save receipts with transactions via computer or mobile device. There are a few other minor features that QM2007 does not have. Also QM2017 has a more robust database structure less prone to corruption. Note that QM2017 is being supported until April 30, 2020 whereas it has been announced that security fixes have ceased for QM2007 since QM2017 is released...see http://www.quicken.com/support/update-quicken-mac-2007-support-policies-may-2016 yet online access will continue as long as the FI/Bank supports it and their security updates don't prevent it.

You may want to review the List of Obstacles and Hindrances for Migrating from QM2007 or QWin to Quicken for Mac. Add your vote to any features that are missing for you. Your VOTES Matter!

Be aware of data that will and will not carry forward:
    https://www.quicken.com/support/what-data-gets-carried-over
Then look at the updates since the original release here:
    https://www.quicken.com/support/quicken-2017-mac-release-notes
You will also want to look at a more detailed comparison done by a SuperUser which also identifies nuances not mentioned elsewhere (and read on for comments from other users too on that same discussion thread):
    https://getsatisfaction.com/quickencommunity/topics/can-anyone-who-has-switched-from-2007-to-2015-he...
Take a look at the following videos to give you a better idea:
    https://www.youtube.com/user/QuickenMac

If you find that QM2017 does not meet your needs, the alternative is to obtain and run QM2007 Lion Compatible (LC), which will run on Mac OS X 10.6.8 to 10.12 Sierra (so far).

Thank you for comment. QM2017 does meet my needs as I converted my first QM2007 file to Qm2017 two years ago for my personal financial file. It converted without a problem and runs OK. Now I am trying to migrate my wife's financial file, which works perfectly in QM2007, but the migration and conversion process is a mess. My impression is the protocol has been modified over time and instructions are unclear and in error. Surely, there must be a reliable set of instructions someplace to get the migration and conversion done!

What's above is as comprehensive as it gets. Your wife's data might be running into one of the obstacles or hindrances listed above.

Also, try to re-index the QM2007 data file to see if that clears up anything too.

If you point out specifics, we might be able to assist you.

Thank you for comments. I went to links and reviewed. Found we have no issues with items not carried over. As to conversion instructions, I have followed them exactly and can find the transferred file by size in Library by using Option/Library but no conversion occurs. I have made a copy of the QM2007 Mac file and ensured <qdfm> was at end of file name(not in caps as shown in QM2017 Mac help instructions.) As to re-indexing, I can't find a menu item for this in QM2007 Mac nor a help reference—where can it be found and I will try. Feel something is keeping conversion from activating.

There is no menu for this. It is hidden. To re-index a QM2007 files, you have to open the Accounts list, then press CMD-OPT-B. You will see a progress bar show up as it re-indexes.

Ah so, a hidden file! I will try but is re-indexing done on QM2007 Mac file prior to migration or after the file is found in Option/Library of QM2017 Mac? Either way, I will apply the technique to a copy rather than risk damaging original file. Also, I will continue to append .qdfm at end of file name.

No, here's no hidden file. Re-indexing Quicken 2007 simple rebuilds some of the indexes in the database. These are known to be susceptible to corruption from time to time in 2007. (If you've been using it so long, I'm surprised you haven't run into a time when Quicken tells you it need to rebuild the indexes. This keyboard command is simply a way to manually trigger that process.)

Could you please describe further exactly what you're seeing when you try to do the import? If you do File > New and see the screen shown above, select Start for Quicken for Mac 2007 file, select the Quicken 2007 data file you want to convert, what happens next?

Thank you for your patience. I performed the following steps.
       1. Ran CMD-OPT-B on a copy of QM2007 on Snow Leopard drive.
       2. Copied re-indexed file to Drive#2 and El Capitan via USB.
       3. Added .qdfm suffix to file name.
       4. Then performed:
            >Opened QM2017 and New File.
            >Then Let's Get Started.
            >Start from Quicken file for Mac.
            >Sign In & Password.
            >Select no mobile.
            >Convert Quicken 2007 file.
            >Select button(file to convert.)
            >Selected and opened QM2007 file with .qdfm
            >Saw exporting data from QM2007.
            >Saw progress bars working.
            >Message successfully imported files.
            >Open the migrated file and saw many errors in Balance Sheet accounts and detail covering the 24 year period.

Conclusion: QM2017 finally transferred the old file but produced numerous errors that would take an impossible amount of time to re-create—very disappointing! Perfect accounting in QM2007 for 24 years and several past versions of QM, but the migration process to QM2017 a disaster. Will have to start new at the beginning of 2019 and write off 24 years of history.
Again, I thank you for your help in this matter. The incident has taught me not to rely on QM2017 as it needs much more development.

Sternhagen, a LOT of Quicken 2007 users have successfully imported their files. In many cases, Quicken inserts a placeholder transaction at the beginning of an account register which throws balances off, but is easily fixed by simply deleting it. Other discrepancies may take more work to hunt down and fix. Looking at the import log file can often give you an idea where the problems occurred. In my case, there are batches of errors which are due to errors in the Quicken 2007 database, not the modern Quicken Mac. All of us longtime users may have different issues, but I’d encourage you to spend at least a little time looking a little deeper before giving up on your 24 years of data. I know I’d be devastated to lose all my history.

Thank you for your encouragement. Now that a migrated file is in place in QM2017 I will re-examine one balance sheet account at a time and reconcile it with detail in QM2007. Perhaps the reconstruction is not as bad as it seems at this point. I will also examine the import log file and see what it discloses. A slow process but it may produce results.
Again thank you for your interest and help.
