I'm curious to see if people keep old copies of the Quicken install program.

EDIT:  Note I'm talking about the main Quicken install program.  Do people keep a copy of an old version or not.

If you have read anything about how to go back to a previous version, you know that the recommendation is to do it with your network connection disconnected to prevent it from downloading and installing the latest patch.

Which brings up the question of why not just installing the Mondo install of the version that you want might not be enough.

The install/patch system is designed to forward applied.  As in it knows how to go from an older version to a newer version.  Reverse patching, going from a newer one to an older one "usually works", but isn't guaranteed to work.

This is the main reasons for not just applying the older patch to a newer version of Quicken.

But do people realize that as Quicken Inc get to the point where they consider a version released to everyone, they update the main install to that version.  So, in other words it will be installing the latest version without downloading anything.  For instance, right now it is installing R38.30.

So, blocking the downloading/installing of the latest patch by disabling your network connection only prevents it from updating past what is considered the release to everyone.

That means that if you want to go to a version earlier than that (say earlier than R38.30 in this case) you are in fact doing a reverse patch if you are installing with the latest downloaded Quicken install program.

The only way to really prevent this is by installing an older copy of the Quicken install program.

Now my personal observation is that most of the time reverse patching is working, but when the timeframe gets longer it gets questionable.  This would mostly come up for people that have decided to let their subscription lapse.

Note one doesn't have to keep multiple copies of the Quicken install program.
I have one from 2018 and I can install that, and any of the newer patches will work to bring it up to that version.

I'm not talking about the Mondo patches.  Yes, I believe everyone should save them, and not rely on the fact that I have them on my website, but in this thread I'm talking about Quicken.exe the main install program for Quicken.

I will update the post above to make the clearer.

We do keep earlier versions of the  Quicken install programs so that we may install older versions reliably.

I recall having a discussion with you a few years ago in which I suggested you consider providing the install program along with the patches on your web site: http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quickenpatches.html.  I think you may have had some licensing concerns.

Yes, I do have those concerns.  But maybe it might be OK.  In the past getting the install program was released to anyone that wanted to download it.  It was on a CD or a private download link.

Quicken Subscription breaks that model and both the install and the patches are available to all, so maybe that isn't a concern any more.

Note: It appears R36.57 is the most recent version Quicken provides to reinstall expired subscriptions: https://www.quicken.com/support/reinstalling-and-patching-your-quicken-subscription-version-after-your-membership-has

I don't keep old install programs. But now I know who to ask if I ever need one.
I am extremely defensive against pushed automatic updates, and I've drilled it into Mrs. Squirrel never to allow one through UAC. My production PC is running R37 and it will remain there until the bugs in later versions are resolved.
EDIT: Actually, I do save some old versions by virtue of neglecting to delete them. My oldest is from 2018, so I guess I'll keep that one around.

Quicken user since version 2 for DOS, now using QWin Biz & Personal Subscription (US) on Win10 Pro.

I notice a couple of things.  One my version is about 1 year newer than the oldest one.  Mine is October of 2018, and the oldest based on the reinstall page is about October of 2017.

The second is the Canadian version is completely left out of all of this.

Unfortunately, I don't have any old versions of the Canadian Subscription install, and their started one year earlier.

I went ahead and put my old install on the website.  If someone has an older version would like that put up instead just contact me on my website.  But that one I posted should be old enough for basically anyone's needs.

Install For Quicken 2018 - Subscription - QuicknPerlWiz

I haven't posted one for Quicken Windows Canadian.  Maybe I will do that later if people think it is needed, but all I have is the one that is available as of today.  Again, if people have an older version, please contact me on my website.

    OK, sorry

I do have several versions of the Install file also.

I have my really old original subscription file and I usually get a new one online about once a year and keep that too with the year in the name. I have only used the install files for clean installs etc.. and use a Mondo when need to back out 1 or 2 revisions

That also appears to be the earliest I have saved: R14.23

Note: We only upgraded from Quicken 2016 in January of 2019.

So far @Rocket J Squirrel has been the winner.  He has given me R27.1.2.20, and I have updated the website with that version.

The goal is to get the oldest possible, so 27.1.2.12 looks like a winner.

I'm not sure it really matters since I seriously doubt anyone it going to even be in the range of any of these as far as how far back, they need to go, but it is nice to have the oldest possible because they the patching is guaranteed to be "forward" instead of reversed.

If you can send me a Dropbox/OneDrive or such share by my support email address or contact page I will download it and put it on the site to replace the one I have.

It looks like R27.1.12 is the ultimate winner.  I have updated my website with it.

    Thanks everyone!
