READ-ONLY access using “Quicken on the Web”

edited October 2023 in Ideas for Quicken on The Web

Greetings,

I have a Quicken on the Web “new product idea” that would be very helpful to me.

My elderly father and I both run quicken (on two different computers), but as my father ages I spend more time fixing problems that he creates than I care to admit (fixes and reconciliations are performed remotely via a shared desktop using MS TEAMS). I have concluded that it will be more efficient for me to take over responsibility for his quicken file (and many if not all of his routine bills) than to debug his constant stream of vexing quicken errors.

If I take this on, I will need to maintain the quicken data file on my computer, but I would like him to have “READ-ONLY access so that he can have insight into the financial process, but he can’t mess up the data.

Would it be possible for Quicken to provide a mechanism (second username/password, other) for my Dad to have READ-ONLY access using “Quicken on the Web” to a data file that I manage (for him) on my computer.

PS – I am now running Quicken Premier on the Mac (and happy with the product).

Thank you.

this is a great idea to be able to share data with my accountant and elderly parents as well. Just like the setup in LifeHub, this is much needed.

Strongly agree that this sharing feature NEEDS to be read only as default or the only option.

The feature is to share data. Why would a user want the shared person to be able to mangle the data file while they click around.

I agree that read-only should be the default but the current read/write ability should continue to be offered as an option. I can understand how some people might have a want or need to give someone else full read/write authority. This is what MS does with OneDrive….the owner can grant different levels of access to 3rd parties to files and folders that are saved on OneDrive.

I was going to add having "read only" users for the web version so I certainly do agree with idea of granting someone read only access. I also agree with some of the comments in this thread that the default for new users should be "read only" — but that it's just a matter of checking a box if you want the user to have edit privileges. We will want to ensure that any new user will not be able to grant access to other users (although, obviously, they could share their username/password with someone else).

Within Google Drive the owner of a file or folder has the ability to grant permissions to other users: editor, viewer, or commenter. If I want to share my quicken account with a financial advisor I would like them to have the ability to comment on transactions so that I can address the issue, and/or respond to the comment. But I don't necessarily want ANY viewer to have the ability to comment.

  • While the update to now be able to share is good (although I too would prefer it to be read only), the other problem with this is that it ONLY works on the web despite the release saying it would also work in the app. Can we get an update as to when the app will also work for this new Managed Sharing?
I posted this separately but it was closed:

I have a similar situation to OP with a small twist. I handle my dad's Quicken instance fully and would like to show him his overall status via the web. My plan is to copy his file and use this copy for a point in time overview. Then at some point I would delete the copy. I would continue to use the original file for his live transactions. I don't see any issues with this plan but if anyone sees a potential issue let me know.

    Thanks

I think if you use File > Copy or Backup File > Create a Copy or Template (I don't know what the path is for QMac) to make the file copy you should be able to do what you want. This copy process will give the copied file totally unique File and Cloud Account IDs so there will be no cross-talk between the copied file and the primary file. Then you could sync it to QWeb so you can grant your father login access only to that copied file's data.

DO NOT use Windows to make the file copy because then the File and Cloud Account IDs will not be unique and the QWeb access you grant to your father will give him full read/write access to the data on your primary data file.

If/when this Product Idea gets implemented you would not need to do this copy process because you could instead simply give your father read-only access to your primary data file info on QWeb.

We need more people to vote for this idea. The more people who vote for it the more likely that Quicken will at some point implement it.

Great! Hopefully the P&D Team will see the value in this and will be able to put it into their development plan and implement it soon!
