I am also encountering this 16503 error code with Vanguard updates via Quicken for Mac. Like others on this string I had the error occur and persist several weeks ago, and now it is back again. I would welcome any updates on solutions.

Downloading from Vanguard into Quicken Classic Deluxe for Mac has been throwing up error messages the past few days.
Quicken's Connection Status window says
There was an unknown error trying to update this connection. Please try again later. (16503)

It's been a day or two (I forget) that I've been unable to update my Vanguard accounts. I get a (16503) error message. I don't expect there's much to be done but wait it out like last month when there was a problem with them, just hoping that by posting here I'll get updates when it's fixed, like last time.

I continue to get the 16503 error message as of 05:45 4/3/25.

same issue this morning. where will quicken be posting updates on this?

Look for post from "Quicken Jasmine". They know its a problem, Quicken and Vanguard are working on it, no ETA on fix. Same message for days and same as last time. I'm hanging in for the fix or will eventually dump Vanguard.

does anyone know if the vanguard connection is currently working for windows quicken users?

April 3 still getting error 16503 in Quicken for Mac

Unfortunately I made the mistake of switching to Quicken connect and now can't get back to Direct Connect. Instead I get the 16503 error. Using the workaround process does not help in Quicken Connect and in fact makes things worse because the downloaded transactions appear as separate and incorrect transactions. I sure hope Vanguard/Quicken get this fixed soon…

@dbthatcher The 16503 error has been widely reported/discussed, and Quicken has acknowledged that they and Vanguard are aware of it and are working towards a resolution. We never get any more detail than that until service is suddenly restored one day.
As you discovered, trying to switch to Quicken Connect is not a good way to go, because without Direct Connect, the account is switched to simple investment tracking mode, hiding all your transactions.
If you wish, you can disconnect the account(s) from downloads, switch back to detail investment tracking in the account settings, go to the Vanguard website to download a QFX file, and import that into Quicken. You just have to make sure there are no duplicate transactions because you have switched connection methods.
Or, if you can live with logging onto Vanguard to see any activity, without the transactions in Quicken, it is probably easiest to just leave the account disconnected for downloading until this Vanguard problem is resolved.

It helps me to know that this is a system problem and not just me having a connection error that needs to be fixed. I appreciate the comments and any updates that become available. With current volatilities I would have liked to have had my hand on the wheel at Vanguard via Quicken, if it is broken right now (again) that job is a lot harder. Does anyone have a contact number or URL with Quicken or Vanguard to post this issue with them directly? Maybe if they hear it enough it will be prioritized, I can at least try to be a part of the solution that way.

both companies are well aware of the issue and have been working on it, don’t people read the comments in this thread?

@sajoslin It has been reported that Quicken and Vanguard are both aware of the issue and working on a fix. If you want to try to up the pressure, call Vanguard. The challenge is getting to speak with someone there in online banking support who knows what Quicken is and can try to find out the status of a fix.

somewhere in this thread it looked like this was working for windows quicken users.
does anyone know if the vanguard connection is currently working for windows quicken users?

this same error is now also occurring on all fidelity accounts. at this point, quicken is pretty much useless to me unless this is fixed soon.

Yes now cannot connect to Fidelity. Would like to see if "and a fix will be in place tomorrow" will fix this too. Pretty much a horror show right now.

I can confirm that Fidelity is also affected.

4/4/25 I'm still getting the 16503. Hope it's getting resolved soon. This is getting annoying.

4/4/2025 I had the first problem with downloading at Vanguard, it was corrected, and then within a week the same thing again. 16503 I see this kind of thing is not only Vanguard, but other financial institutions as well, and I imagine it's because login security vulnerabilities are at an all-time high for various reasons now and Financial entities are finally getting around to the idea that we need better protection. (Passkeys, and Biometrics, rather Than Passwords for example) I've been using Quicken for decades, but if there ever was a time to be able to monitor your finances quickly to make rapid decisions and be able to record that, that would be right now!
I contacted Vanguard by phone and Chat and they took down the error code and said they are so busy it is not likely they will do anything for 5 to 6 days. I would have expected Vanguard to be ahead of this curve that was so obviously in the making.

I still have the error 16503. Why has Quicken support gone silent? I tried to open the previous string regarding this ongoing problem and I get an access PERMISSION error?

Fidelity is now working - no error and downloading transactions. Vanguard still 16503.
0 -
All, I know this is frustrating, but if you absolutely need the transactions, just downloading from Vanguard and importing to Quicken worked flawlessly for me a literally took less than 60 seconds.

4/4 1030 pacific I'm still getting the 16503 error when trying to update my vanguard accounts (quicken classic 8.1.1, macOS 15.3.2).
