BUG: share balance is wrong from a simple transaction
Look at this transaction, and share balance. The balance was 1,048,021 shares, I sold 99,965 shares. By my calculator the share balance should be 948,056. But it shows as 948,055.0199999! I just noticed this, it came down on May 29. If I click on the line item, the number shows as 99,965 shares, there are no hidden decimal places.
I just tried deleting the downloaded/cleared transaction and adding it manually, it looks exactly the same. I also tried manually changing the shares sold to 35 - it showed up correctly. So I modified it again to 99,965 shares, and I got the crazy balance again. That doesn't even add up right!
I found by unchecking "extended share precision, all the decimal places went away, but it becomes this now, also wrong (share balance calculated incorrectly):
How can I fix this?

@Don Awalt the first thing I would check is if there are any hidden placeholder transactions.

@Don Awalt that is perplexing. The only other thing I can think to do if you haven't already is a data file validate (plus super validate, and include "rebuild tax lots"). Also, when you are in the investment account register, do a "Ctrl-Z".
Also, split transaction can cause goofy rounding issues like this. Or, future dated investment transactions.

@Don Awalt the only other thing I can suggest is making a copy of your data file using Quicken "copy file" process and see if you still see the same behavior in the new data file copy. If you don't then you can use the new copied file going forward. The only caveat is that you will need to reactivate online services for all your accounts in the new data file.
Otherwise, I am out of suggestions for now. I will circle back if I think of anything else.
In the meantime I am hoping that someone else can come up with the solution. In the back of my mind, I kind of remember a situation like this being discussed in the forum.

@Don Awalt I tried the same transactions but got the correct results.
Are the column headers in your screen shot Description and Share Balance?
Click on holdings and set the As of date to the day before the purchase of 100,000 shares. Is the share count exactly 948,021 shares?
Go to the Security Detail page for the security involved and click on More then Edit Price History. Is the price on the dates involved something other than 1.00?

Hi @Jim_Harman , yes they are Description and Share Balance from the account register (click on the fund in the left sidebar).
The two line items I pasted an image of were both 'Sold'. So the day before these two transactions' share balance is 1,148,021.
5/29 -= sold 100,000 balance 1,048,021
5/30 sold 99,965 balance is 948,055.0199999
So the Holdings Share count matches these, like the register.
Security Detail for May 28, 29,30 (and other days) shows Price 1 (no decimals), high 1, low 1, Volume 0.
Thanks for your reply!

So here is an interesting test that shows how quirky this is:
- I added a transaction on July 4 2025 (today) - sold 99,965 shares at $1. All looks correct
- I changed the date to May 27,2025 (the day before the two transitions - still correct.
- I changed the date to May 30, 2025 (same day) - it's correct! I can tell which transaction of the two is my newly added one as it is not 'cleared'. The balance is correct for it, the other one is still bad.
- I delete the cleared/bad one - the one remaining is now incorrect with the same values!!
So it seems to be date-dependent too?!?!?!
The other points of note -
(1) The fund balance in dollars matches the online (T Rowe Price) fund's balance to the penny.
(2) I also tried just adding the roughly .8 shares to make the balance match perfectly, but then the total fund value was wrong! It's seems like the share balance really is correct internally, as the fund value is correct. Yet the share balance is reported wrong on all the reports (for example Investing/Portfolio shows the wrong share balance but correct fund value).

This does seem odd. You might try selecting a transaction in the account and hitting Ctrl-Z to force it to recalculate.

Thanks @Jim_Harman the Ctrl-Z did not help. I didn't know about that command though!
I tried some other things - I tried deleting the transaction, super validate, quit Q, deactivate the account, quit Q, activate the account (no transactions downloaded), re-add the transaction by hand, same thing.
I changed the dates all around - if I put it in the past, the next transactions around 5/29 caused the share balance to be wrong with a partial .0xxxxx number.
The only thing I noticed, which might be a clue? In the Investing/Performance report, in the Shares column (which also incorrectly reports xxxx.8299999 shares in the fund), there is a small 'avg cost' to the left of the shares in that fund only. It's a Money Market. Is this right, or might Q be trying to do some calculation based on or using average cost (which should always be $1/share)?
