Will a new installation of quicken home & business 2012-2017 receive needed updates?
Does anyone know if an older quicken for windows will still get updates that were issued for that version by Intuit to patch bug fixes? I don't need the ability to download from financial institutions.
I ask because I need to reinstall my Quicken 2012 H&B, and can't find the CD. If I do find it, or if I buy an old copy from somewhere, it'd be good to know if some of the bugs included in the original release will be dealt with via updates. I still have my old copy working on the old pc but as far as I can tell that could only contribute the data files to a new installation. The version I had was fine for the need. I'd just buy a new copy of the current version but don't want to engage in the subscription model. I know the current version will work less online trx updates after subscription expiration, but will not put up with 1/3 of the screen being devoted to quicken ads.

If you need Home and Business install your only choice is to go with the Quicken Subscription version.
Patches you can get (at my website) but not the install of Quicken with the exception of Quicken 2013 Deluxe, which Quicken Inc is providing for the purpose of the rare situation that it was needed for the conversion from an older version to the current version (which was really only needed for early patch versions Quicken 2014). It (Quicken 2013 Deluxe) can be used indefinitely though. Quicken 2013 was the last version that was truly offline. Starting in Quicken 2014 you have to use a Quicken Id to install it, but the server that allows logging in to the Quicken Id changed and no longer works with Quicken 2014 through 2017 (2018 is the start of Quicken Subscription).
Quicken 2013 Deluxe can be found here:

2025 will get updates, but not 2017.
thecreator-bTesting Quicken Subscription Beta B63.19 (Nov. 2023) Installed 24/7.

If someone else could confirm what thecreator-b just wrote I'd appreciate it. No updates for bugs of any sort for other than the current year version, unless subscribed?

Hello @spacehorse,
The information provided by @thecreator-b and @Chris_QPW is accurate—older versions no longer receive updates or bug fixes, and server-side support for features like the Quicken ID sign-in no longer functions for those versions. These services are only available with the latest version of Quicken and an active subscription.
Hope this answers your question!

OK thanks Chris in particular, but all of you.

Just to settle my curiosity, does it mean that an unopened quicken 2017 would never be able to activate? It sounds like it. There are a few for sale out there from vendors that have a single copy. I was considering buying one of those, or a 2015 etc version, as I judged that the copy was legit, since only one copy and never opened.
Also, there are many more sellers on ebay that offer "usb" versions of quicken software, and seem to have many available. I wrote to one, asking about the activation key, if it was already used, and how they could possibly have so many pre owned copies. The reply didn't answer either question. These have to be bogus copies, but possibly they work somehow, as they have mostly favorable reviews.

@Chris_QPW has already answered this question, from his earlier reply:

Thanks NotACPA, I'd read what Chris wrote, was just kind of dumbfounded by it…kind of pointless to have asked about it. It is pretty poor practice on the part of Quicken to have turned of the ability to activate software that one has purchased. It doesn't apply to me, but say if I needed to reinstall quicken 2017 on a new pc, it'd fail. Boo on Quicken.

For what it is worth, I don't think it was intentional.
Ironically, I warned about this way back when they adopted the Intuit Id back in Quicken 2014 (When Intuit owned Quicken it was called the Intuit Id and was using Intuit servers, it changed to the Quicken Id when Quicken Inc bought Quicken and changed to their servers), but I also got sort of caught by this (I always use the most current version, but I was using older versions to test for others on here).
In some ways it is interesting that the Quicken install had no kind of check to make sure you were the rightful purchaser. If you got a hold of the install, it would just work. I can certainly see how they wanted to make it so that the user had to prove the purchase.
But this system has a major drawback in that if the server ever goes away, the customer will face these kinds of problems.
That brings me back to why I don't think it was intentional. When you try to install log into the Quicken Id for 2014 to 2017 you get a blank page. To me that means that it is being done as web page, and most likely somewhere along the lines that page got removed. It is important to note that it didn't stop working for years after Quicken Subscription (Quicken 2018) was introduced. On the other hand, once it failed there isn't really much incentive for Quicken Inc to fix it. Just like now when people complain that there is an ad taking up space if you don't renew the subscription don't really seem to understand, that if they are no longer paying Quicken Inc, they are no longer customers. Quicken Inc needs customers to pay for ongoing development.

Appreciate the details in there. I can understand Quicken wanting to make sure that a single copy of the software isn't deployed by many. But personally I think they have a duty to ensure that if you bought a product you can reinstall it later if you need to. I don't, because I only had 2012 h&b, but anyone that bought one that needs the ID system and gets new pc, to me it doesn't seem right that they can't reinstall the software they paid for.
