Payments not matching to the downloaded transactions [Edited]

I'm happy that the new eBills is more reliable. I can connect more of my stuff to eBills than before. However, that brings up new usability issues. Here's #2.

I use several credit card issuers (e.g., Chase) that provide multiple cards. Autopaying the card from my checking account produces a transaction with a line item like "chase autopay", but doesn't specify which account. So, the payee in quicken is just "Chase", but eBill requires a distinct payee for each eBill connection, like "Chase Freedom". Therefore, I think that's resulting in the payments not getting detected and matched, right? And then, if I click "mark as paid", then Quicken creates a duplicate transaction (for the same amount) from my checking account to the "Chase Freedom" payee.

Is there no way to handle this? Maybe Quicken could update the payee in addition to the transaction amount? Given there is a transaction with the similar date and same amount in the credit account, I think that would work in general, irrespective if the balance, minimum due, or other amount were paid?

Thanks!

Here's a screenshot of the duplicated transaction. I hope in the future Quicken could match it reliably.

    Hello @jeff-y,

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is tricky when the Payee is identical in your checking account regardless of which card was paid.

What I do to try to bypass that issue in my own Quicken file is create renaming rules based off of how the payee downloads into the credit card account (since there, it shows the last 4 of the card number), and then set up Quickfill rules to document the transfer based on that renamed payee. As long as Quicken recognizes and links the transfer properly, it results in the renamed payee being carried over into the checking account also, and helps it recognize that the downloaded transfer is the same as the reminder.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi @Quicken Kristina,

I use Bank of America (which is I think the second largest bank) and they unfortunately do not put the last 4 of the car number - or any ID unique to the card account - in the description for the transaction. There's an ID that is unique for each payment, and a "CO ID" that is unique to each provider, but shared for each card.

Yes, it's unfortunate a card ID is not in the description, but as you can see from the screenshot above, maybe Quicken could implement a workaround where the debits and credits are matched when the amount is the same and the dates are nearly the same?

I setup autopay through the credit card portals. Maybe if I do it via bill pay / eBills via the BoA checking account portal, it will add other useful information?

It doesn't look like switching to bill pay (in Bank of America checking) will add useful information. I'm already using it for one card, and the tx description just shows "[provider] CREDIT CARD Bill Payment", with no option to add a memo in the recurring BoA's bill pay settings.

If you rely on new register transactions being created from downloaded transactions, you may not be able to get this resolved, ever.

For best results I recommend you manually enter transfer transactions into your register BEFORE you download transactions from the bank which contain the transfer confirmations. For recurring transfers use scheduled reminders and enter them several days before the due date.
Be sure to use distinct Payee Names for each transfer / credit card payment to avoid confusing Quicken - memorized payee entries, e.g., "XYZ VISA 1234" and "XYZ VISA 3456"
That takes the guesswork out of the downloading process. Because a correctly entered transfer transaction already exists in your account registers, the download process should just match the downloaded transfer transaction to the existing one in both accounts and not create problems.

I can use the eBill to register an expected payment to the correct account (with the exception that it doesn't work for anything besides the full balance, and doesn't work for some of my credit card accounts).

Yes, downloaded transactions should just match to the existing transaction created manually or via eBill. However, the payee for the downloaded transaction is just "Chase" rather than "Chase 1234", so it can't match. All the other transaction info matches up pretty well though.

So, I feel like this is something that could be resolved! It requires a bit of a workaround, because of the limited info provided by BoA, but a human can tell the txs (e.g., in the screenshot above) are duplicates / matching.

I really like being able to see my projected EOM balance, but not if I have to login every couple of days to add manual transactions for all the autopay payments!

    Thank you for your reply,

Since you're asking for Quicken to add/change the way it functions, I recommend that you create an Idea post to request this. Ideas that get enough votes may be implemented in the future! For information about creating an Idea post, please review the discussion linked below:
