sams club is $60 for classic deluxe right now, and walmart is $42.

remember the good old days when you could get quicken on a CD, free after rebate, and use it for as long as you wanted without upgrading?

I don't remember "free after rebate". I've used Quicken since 2000, but I can remember back to when online institution access, like Direct Connect, was good for 3 years after which usage was limited to manual unless you bought an update. Did online access at one time work indefinitely after purchase? I'm not a fan of subscriptions (is anybody?), but most of the software I use has converted to that model.

For no useful reason, I have some saved backups going back to 2001, but the 3-year pattern I've got backups for goes 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, then annual backups starting in 2020, so I guess the 3-year pattern started around 2008 and the annual subscriptions must have started in 2020? Something like that.

THX for posting the Walmart page again… I found another Black Friday Walmart page with the same info. I hope it is real as I had an issue years ago with Walmart advertised price for Quicken Premier software. (remember when Quicken hadn't yet marked their product only for new customers?) I do and I purchased one and found out upon trying to install it that it was just for new customers. Long story short they refused a refund as the software had been opened. They showed me their small print disclosure stating the the adds were not written by Walmart and any issue needs to be addressed to the product manufacturer or other providers of the product and etc. etc.

These 2 adds now seen on two different pages probable are good. I ordered online but I'm not going to open the software when I get it in a few dsys until I go to a Walmart store and discuss this with them. There disclosure is still there.

The rebates were usually because Intuit just sold you TurboTax.

As for going down memory lane, I remember when Direct Connect or any import method didn’t exist.

And you can still use Quicken Subscription for as long as you like if you are willing to enter transactions manually. In fact, with Quicken Windows you can still do QIF imports. And Quicken 2013 is available for free for anyone.

I personally first bought Quicken in 1992, the lowest edition cost between $25 and $27 at the time. If you believe the CPI numbers (I don’t I think they are too low) the inflation adjusted value is $55 to $65.

Not interested in creating another Quicken account if that is what you mean by not hard to do. When I first saw the Black Friday 47% discount on Q's web page (subject of this discussion) and when I cliicked to purchase and checkout I was required to log in to my Q account or create a new account. When I did log in the discount price changed to full price at checkout.

THX for this discussion. I respectfully will say I want this to be my last post here but will read any additional posts anyway. 😊😊😊

I bought the Walmart key today, but won't actually have to apply it for several months, so in the meantime I'm hoping anyone else who buys this will post if they have a good or bad experience with it. I suppose sooner would be better than later since the sale won't be around indefinitely.

I will report back once I get my product key, should be later this week. Folks on Reddit were reporting on the office depot codes being successful. I don't have OD near me so Walmart with free shipping was best for me.

And I will add that I don't think it is confirmed, but the rumor is that the keys are only good for a year so don't buy it if your subscription is more than a year from expiring. That is the reason I'm not buying it at this time. The last time I bought my Quicken subscription I held it till just into 6 months before the subscription was to end. The result is the I was extended to almost a year and a half.

I will have to see if someone has a discount after December 12.

Frankly for me this is more of a game, than a need.

    Hello @Chris_QPW,

The rumor is correct. Our article on managing your subscription states that activation codes are good for 1 year after purchase:

    I hope this helps!

Quicken's official policy is that activation codes bought at retail stores are good for 1 year after purchase (see the "How long can I extend my membershipip plan?" answer). I'm not entirely sure how that works when the code is in a box that was packaged up some indeterminate amount of time prior to purchase (probably the codes are really good for more than 1 year) but I would assume if you have a receipt for a code that's expired and you bought it less than a year ago you could contact Quicken Support to get a new one.

Since codes can only be used in the last 6 months of your current subscription and are not guaranteed to work for more than 1 year after purchase, the net result is that you should generally only buy one at a time. If your subscription is just about to expire you would probably be safe buying two, using one now and another in 6 months.

Best Buy online has Quicken discounted too. It doesn't mention for new subscribers only. Deluxe is $41.93 and I just bought Premier for $57.53. I've been a user since 1990. It's a disc shipped to me. I just enter the activation code right in from Quicken. Go to Help, Mange Your Subscription, Enter Activation Code. I've been doing that way for years.

Walmart, Best Buy, and Newegg routinely have an annual sale, usually around Black Friday, on the Quicken product line. Walmart and Best Buy are happening now. ~$45 for deluxe. Not just new subscribers.

OK…… Received my purchase of Quicken Premier from WalMart today.( WalMart's Black Friday add and another regular add ) It says nothing on the box about New Subscriber version. WalMart's 2 adds showed their regular price of $121.24 crossed out and their purchase price of $56.99 before tax. Free Shipping.

I started my Quicken to activated this purchase (within the 6 month threshold per Quicken). It activated without issue. My subscription is now good until March of 2027

So my comment and a question: Quicken provides their product to Walmart so they can sell it. WalMart reduced their WalMart retail price from $121.24 to $56.99. Why did Quicken only give discounts to the New Suscribers version on their Black Friday? Kinda seems like a slap in the face to the long term Quicken subscribers but that's just my opinion.

Quicken Inc has nothing to do with what price Walmart sells it at. The retailer decides if they want to discount it.

Yes I know what Walmart can do. Seems they care more about us long time subcribers than Quicken. Just my opinion as a 30+ (almost 40 now) year customer of Quicken.

I think it was @Jon gave a good explanation why Quicken Inc wouldn't give a discount to "long time users" but will to new users on their website.

What do you think the percentage of new users to existing users is?

I think the percentage of new users is tiny. Let's face it, Quicken Classic is called Classic because it is dying.

If they give a discount to existing users, they have basically just lowered the price for basically everyone. And the trend isn't to make Quicken less expensive it is the opposite, well sort of. If you take inflation into account, it really hasn't gone up that much.

The discount for new users on the other hand is no more than the same thing Intuit did years ago with trial versions and such. They hope to hook new users in.

I was curious about past pricing. Intuit did offer a discount to upgraders in 1997. Here is from a stock holder's message from that time:

    Pricing and Availability

Quicken and Quicken Deluxe are available for Windows 3.1 as 16-bit applications and Windows 95 as 32-bit applications. The anticipated street price for Quicken is $29.95 less a $10.00 rebate for upgraders; for Quicken Deluxe, $59.95 less a $20.00 rebate for upgraders. Both products will be available at leading retail stores in the United States in October 1996. Quicken and Quicken Deluxe are also available directly from Intuit by calling 1-800-624-8742.

I do note though that $39.95 (the discounted price for Quicken Deluxe) is about equivalent to $80.65.

And if you had paid the original $59.95 it would have been $121.05.

Note the original price of Quicken was $49.95, and that was to undercut the prices of the business software at the time that were going for $200 to $300.

@Chris_QPW if I recall Intuit never had a suscription based product before they sold Quicken. It didn't expire. You could buy an updated version along the way if you chose to. Correct me if my recall is in error. My opinion as stated has not changed and if you want to continue that's fine. I am thru. Opinion stands.

Depends on your definition of "Subscription". At the being it was all manual entry. This is in fact why I stopped using it for a while. I did manual entry for a year or so and then just gave up on it. Later you could download transactions and even pay bills using Direct Connect. Wells Fargo charged $5 for downloading of transactions and $5 a month for paying bills through Quicken. And that was supported for 3 years. The current subscription model is you get online services for 1 year, so that is different than the 3 years, but they are both "subscriptions" in my opinion.

So, in all fairness you could consider the price tripled because you are getting 1 year instead of 3 years, but on the other hand I don't think there is any financial institution charging for downloading transactions these days (there are ones that charge for bill pay though)

Rec'd my Quicken premier today from Walmart purchase, activated my renewal with no issue. Now good till 2026.

Resellers like Walmart, New Egg etc discount stock to move inventory like any retailer. MAYBE they have a contract with Quicken to purchase a certain # of inventory each year and 2025 is almost over. Maybe they want to increase their holidays sales figures. If it's still on sale in a month I may buy another copy.

@retird You ask why Walmart would discount one version but not another. The answer might be incredibly simple: they have a lot of inventory of one and not as much as the other, so they discount the one for which they're overstocked. No conspiracy. No "slap in the face" to users. No Quicken involvement. Simple retail sales management. 😀

Several big box stores mentioned by others here have discounts but I used Walmart as they also had my subscription based PC Security software on sale also. Saved a total of $159.25 which includes tax and etc.

What I said: Why did Quicken only give discounts to the New Suscribers version on their Black Friday? Kinda seems like a slap in the face to the long term Quicken subscribers

@retird I already wrote why I think Quicken doesn't discount renewals for existing subscribers. Almost all of their revenue comes from ongoing subscribers, not from new subscribers each year. Allowing existing subscribers to renew at a discount would cut their revenue; it would mean that their regular "list" price is the price in name only, because most users would learn to wait for the sale to renew at the lower rate. Why would they voluntarily cut their revenue like that? How would it benefit them? It would likely require them to raise their list price, such that the discount price would be similar to the old list price. So no one would win.

As for the "slap in the face" by giving a discount to new subscribers, you have to understand it's just a teaser rate to get more users into their subscriber base — users who will get hooked on their product and be willing to renew at the regular price in subsequent years. Many subscription-based businesses do this. You can subscribe to the New York Times online for just $1/week, but that deal is for new subscribers. Or if you buy a car and it comes with SiriusXM satellite radio at a steep discount for the first year; they want to get you hooked so you'll renew at their regular rate for many years. The Hulu streaming service for the past several years has had an amazing Black Friday deal to get their service for $1/month for a year — but it's only for new subscribers. And just like with Quicken, if you want to jump around to use different email addresses each year, you can perpetually be a "new" subscriber. And with many subscription services, if you call, you can get them to give you a discount for your renewal. This is the way many subscription service businesses operate; Quicken is not unusual, and it is not giving a "slap in the face" to its longtime customers.
