I'd love to see Quicken allow customers the ability to purchase gift certificates for friends or family… There are a couple people I'd love to help get started on Quicken. If I could give them a 1 month gift certificate so they could try quicken for a month I would!

Quicken already has a "try it for one month, and return for full refund if you don't like it" policy.

So, other than you paying for it, I really don't see what your proposal adds.

@NotACPA I think the idea of giving it as a paid gift is the idea. I don't think a single month is useful enough for new users to try it an evaluate it, and doing transactions of gift cards for less than $10 doesn't seem practical for Quicken selling it or as a meaningful gift. But I could envision them offering a 3-month or 6-month gift subscription. It wouldn't think such a product would be sold in stores, so there'd be no retail packaging and shipping involved, but I'd think such gift subscriptions could easily be sold on their website. The benefit to Quicken would be new users who could covert to long-term customers. and I like the idea of being able to gift someone a trial of Quicken with the underlying message that "I think this will help you manage your finances better". 😀

@jacobs @BK But the OP specifically stated one month. Both of you are expanding upon that idea, which I was responding to.

I still believe that the OP, as stated, offers little to no benefit over current policy.

I disagree. None of it is the same.

You can’t pay for a month, you have to pay by the year. And if the person you did that for didn’t cancel within a month you are on the hook for a year. What’s more if they use it for a month and cancel Quicken Inc gets nothing. With some kind of short subscription kind of gift then Quicken Inc gets that amount and the person giving the gift doesn’t have the expense/hassle.

I do agree that maybe one month might not be the right period of time, but then again they current 30 day refund seems to think it is.

I do agree that maybe one month might not be the right period of time, but then again the current 30 day refund seems to think it is.

But a user who buys Quicken is already actively engaged, and if they want to try it out with the option of a refund, they will jump right in. Also, Quicken already has your money; the onus is on you to decide to seek a refund within 30 days.

That's very different than if someone received a month as a gift. They might not pursue a trial as vigorously, because they're not yet very committed to it, and because they don't have a financial risk if the 30 days expire. It would be in Quicken's interest to sell a longer gift subscription — perhaps 3 or 6 months, as I suggested — both to make more money upfront and to hope to engage the user enough to turn them into a long-term subscriber.

Note I had a typo in my comment “the” instead of “they”. I was trying to say Quicken Inc might feel 30 days is enough. I personally would lean towards more time. In fact I would lean towards a gift where the giver can choose the amount of months.

All good points and spirits. I think @Destria planted an interesting idea where the Quicken's marketing can ponder over creative variations. This idea post doesn't necessarily need votes since it is not a product enhancement, rather somehow needs to get their attention. Perhaps one of the Mods could forward it to them. I would give someone a 3-month gift (or buy two to make it 6-months).
