Index Securities

I was trying to delete some of the default indices (e.g., Dow Jones 15 Utilities) that have no direct relevance to my portfolio. It said "Unable to Delete Index - Index securities cannot be deleted." I discovered that if I edited the index security and changed the Type from "Index" to "Other" that I could then delete the unneeded index.

However, that got me wondering about what purpose indices serve in QM. Can you overlay them against a fund or portfolio? It would be really nice to create a model portfolio of indices based on a strategic asset allocation and then compare its returns against my actual portfolio.
