I followed the instructions in NotePad and when it instructs you to Open NotePad in Quicken and click FILE » OPEN » and type "QUI" in the FILE NAME PAGE I am given 4 Quicken choices, none of which work

Help with opening the amended notepad file … Old guy here but

While this 'work-around' is possible, it is clumsy, cumbersome, and time consuming. This is not why we pay for Quicken.

I'm concerned that having this option available will de-motivate Quicken to provide an actual fix, so that it provides the functionality we are paying for, and not requiring us to use this 'kludgy' work-around.

I went to the Target Circle Website and found the current FYI. In the "Third Party Data Aggregators" it looks like the automatic downloading is over and Target is saying the we need to refresh the information manually. I may be interpreting this incorrectly, but I am showing a screenshot of what I found.

bottom line is Target simply doesn't want to enable this feature for Quicken (or anyone else)…people berating Quicken about this are barking up the wrong tree (although it would be nice if Target didn't put null values in their QFX downloads that they know would break Quicken)

If this is the case, then I agree - it's not Quicken's fault.

That said, if this is the case, then Quicken should be posting this, rather than saying they're working on a fix, with no ETA.

@MLinDFWTX You don't "Open" the file in Quicken. You need to Import it. See screenshot and perform these steps after you've made the changes to the QFX file in Notepad and saved it. Then import it and you should get the download scripts you're accustomed to.

@DLCPhoto - I don't know whose fault it is but your suggestion that this fix might reduce the chances there'll be an actual fix makes no sense.

A knowledgeable Quicken user @C posted it, helping a lot of people to, at least temporarily, get their Target transactions into Quicken. That's a good thing.

Having now used the manual download and import of the QFX file, which works but is nevertheless cumbersome compared to Quicken's One Step Update (imagine doing that separately for all your banks and credit cards!), and having read the comments indicating that Target is apparently intentionally preventing downloading by "Third Party Aggregators" (I think they mean Quicken), I really don't want to use that Target card any longer. It is quite disappointing that Target is uninterested in allowing customers the convenience of using Quicken to track their credit card purchases. But Quicken also needs to be candid about this as they must know that Target is taking this position and has no intention of allowing this automatic download. They've said as much in the above quoted statement. If Target National Bank is worried about security, perhaps they should pass this problem off to one of the many other banks like Capital One or Citi which routinely handles this for numerous other sellers, such as Costco, Kohls, etc.

Oh, I'm not saying this isn't useful, or shouldn't have been posted, as it is a help to the community. I just worried that it might take the pressure off Quicken to fix the problem (if it is fixable), since they could say just use this method and be done with it.

….should we blow up Target's Social Media Pages with "Third Party Aggregators" complaints?

They've opened a support ticket and they've claimed they are expediting it, so I highly doubt the fix (which is just part of the manual way of importing data) will de-motivate them to get the One-Step Update working again.

It all comes down to if Target will cooperate or not. If Target updated their system to specifically block 3rd party aggregators and they refuse to budge, then we will most likely be forced to use the manual update (with Target hopefully fixing the fields in the .qfx export so we don't have to do the fix anymore). It's possible Target's statement was made because they knew their updates would break 3rd party systems, but might still be willing to work with Quicken to get something working. It all depends on their current policies. We'll find out sooner or later.

What I've done with duplicate downloads:

    1 - make a backup

2 - accept the transactions that are not duplicates and reconcile those transactions

3 - accept the balance of the transactions

4 - filter the transactions that are not reconciled but are cleared. these would be the duplicates ( C ) not ( R ) or ( blank)

5 - select all cleared ( C ) select first listed, scroll to end and select the last transaction with the shift key down

6 - hit the delete key

concerns? try it on a copy of your quicken file

If your transactions are not reconciled ( R ) mark them all reconciled

    @Mike O'Brien

If you depend only on the downloads, consider the steps below and adjust accordingly.
I enter my transactions and use the downloads to reconcile.

This is what I've done with accounts that have had duplicates when downloading:

1 - make a backup ( if you're not sure about this process, open the backup and use as a copy)
you can look at the account list first to get a transaction count to crosscheck
make note of the account balance,
the balance and transaction count should not change when you're done
2 - make sure that all of transactions that you have reconciled in the past are reconciled. ( R )
3 - download transactions - you can sort the downloaded transactions by new or matched
4 - accept those transactions that match (these should be the most current),they would show cleared ( C ) , mark them reconciled ( R )
5 - at this point the balance of the transactions in the register should be ( C ) and would be duplicates, select all of the transactions but selecting the first showing in the register, got to the bottom and select the last transaction with the shift key down.
    6. hit the delete.

account balance and transaction count should be the same as when you started.

    it's not painful

@jcalisher But it’s looking to me like duplicate transactions will not be our problem as Target seems bound and determined to ignore users who rely upon the Quicken One Step Update. We’ll see, but I doubt that Target National Bank will reverse course. Frustrating that we’ve all spent the last three weeks fooling with this as if it’s going to be fixed sometime soon. It’s certainly not worth the 5% I’ve saved on the RedCard - less than $5 this month. But thanks for your thoughts. Mike O’Brien

@Mike O'Brien - I hope you will convey your thinking about not using the Target card to Target. That kind of action will do more to change these kinds of problems than anything.

@sjweiswasser I appreciate the thought, but I suspect that the Target National Bank management people making these decisions (1) don't use Quicken to track their personal finances or even know anyone who does and (2) aren't concerned about their relatively few customers who do. And they certainly don't waste their time reading this Quicken blog. So if Quicken management can't pull this off, I doubt that any of us Quicken users can do it for them.

I attempted to send Target RedCard the following message, but their site has message saying their message service in now unavailable so I sent it to the attention of Target Management at my account for their shopping site:

Target's decision to no longer permit Quicken's One Step Update and to relegate RedCard customers to downloading their account activity using the far more cumbersome and time consuming QFX download procedure is alienating many of your customers (like me). I will not be using my Target RedCard and will accordingly limit my purchases at Target. See:

I am guessing they are still lobbying Target to change course and want to be diplomatic about it in public, or are working on feasibility of another workaround like a shim for connections to Target

for me, we just do weekly grocery shopping there, it isn't a big pain to download transactions once or twice a month, although silly and annoying that Target can't just fix the null fields, which is definitely their fault

As of 4/3/2025 10:15am it appears that the problem has been resolved. Ater my initial OSU still showed a problem, I used the "fix it" link and was required to go through the account setup process and given the option to link the "new" account to my existing one. I was required to request/input a pass code from Tatrgat a coule of times during the process, but it does appear to connect now. To whoever that did whatever, "thank you."

One step update connected but if you download the QFX file, it is still missing data.

This has caused me to change behavior. I have just stopped shopping at Target altogether. Makes it much easier. Costco solves all of my issues.
