There Must Be a Way To Make a Category Neither Income Nor Expense

I know Quicken for Windows lets you create a category that is neither income nor expense, but the Mac version doesn't seem to have this feature. Is there any creative way that I can create a category that is neither income nor expense.I can't seen to find anything on this (this is not a transfer transaction.) Any ideas would be appreciated and I really wish Quicken would allow you to do this.

    Hello @EMM57,

    Thank you for reaching out with this question. Since it's not a transfer, perhaps the closest you could get to a category that is neither expense nor income would be an Adjustment (then use the memo column to provide more information).

    I hope this helps!

    @Quicken Kristina

    Is "Adjustment" a special entry in Quicken Mac?

    At times it bothers me that Quicken Windows has reused the category field for what is certainly not a "category" and done a poor job of supporting what they have created at that. I'm not sure how Quicken Mac exactly handles this, but I have seen references to "Opening balance" and now "Adjustment" in Quicken Mac threads so maybe both of these are a special entry?

    To clarify what I'm talking about Quicken Windows uses these three syntaxes in the category field:

    category → Regular category

    [This account] → Balance Adjustment (including opening balance)

    [Other account] → Transfer to the other account

    And to top it off in parts of Quicken Windows they treat a transfer as a "limited category" which you can't hide like regular categories, and in other places they treat it as an account that also doesn't behave correctly when you are trying to hide it.

    @Chris_QPW Yes, "Adjustment" is a special category in Quicken Mac which is neither income now expense — which is exactly what you're asking for @EMM57. You can't create your own neither-income-nor-expense categories, but I'm not sure why you'd need to since transactions with Adjustment are excluded from reports of income or expenses.

    @Chris_QPW: Thanks - I will use that. I have a couple of transaction types that really are neither expense nor income and I don't want them showing up when I click on the "Spending" or "Income" pie charts. Thanks!

    @jacobs Thanks for the information. That certainly seems a lot more logical than Quicken Windows' nonsense syntax for it.
