Quicken Deluxe Capabilities

I am thinking about buying Quicken Deluxe or Premier. Do either or both have the ability to recognize specific funds or ETFs, categorize them and provide an asset allocation? Including funds that may be target-funds, which have asset allocations buried in them?

Yes they can both give you an overall asset allocation based on your holdings, including for balanced funds, target retirement, etc. Caveats for both:

• Asset allocation data can be downloaded, but only for publicly traded securities with ticker symbols, not for special funds that may be in a 401(k) for example. You can set the allocation manually for non-public securities.
• Built-in asset classes are US Large Cap, US Small Cap, International, US Bonds, Global Bonds, Cash, Other, and Unclassified. You can define several additional classes if you want.

Premier provides limited access to Morningstar's Portfolio X-Ray, which provides a more detailed breakdown for securities that are in Morningstar's database, and some additional reports.

No version of Quicken can "run off of an iPad". Basically, there is two different Desktop applications, one for Windows and one for Macs (which will run on a Mac book). And then there are "companion apps" that can run on iOS (iPad, iPhone), Android, and Web. The Desktop apps are the "master database/file", which can sync some data to the "Quicken Cloud dataset", which the Mobile/Web apps use as their data source.

I agree with what others have shared — both Quicken Deluxe and Premier can give you an overall asset allocation based on your holdings, including balanced or target-date funds, as long as the securities have ticker symbols. For funds without ticker symbols (like some in 401(k) plans), you can enter the allocation manually.
