Tax Planner for 2025 does not work.
In trying to use the Tax Planner, Quicken goes through the following gyrations:
"Please wait while Windows configures Quicken. … Gathering the required information. … The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert 'Quicken' disk and click OK."
Since there is no longer a Quicken disk, it results in "Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Quicken. The Windows Installer cannot continue." Quicken then goes into a continuous loop asking for the same thing.
I have used the Tax Planner every year about this time. In trying to use it today for the first time this year, 12/4/25, I have run into this problem for the first time.
I am currently using: Quicken Classic Premier for Windows Version R65.17, Build 27.1.65.17
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2, Quality Update: 2025-11 .NET 8.0.22 Update for x64 Client (KB5071066)

Hello @WRR,
Thank you for reaching out!
Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling Quicken? Please refer to the following support articles for instructions on uninstalling here and reinstalling here.
However, after you have uninstalled and before you proceed with reinstalling, please open your Windows File Explorer and navigate to This PC > C: Drive > Program Files (x86) and delete the folder titled "Quicken" (doing so does not affect your data files).
After you have deleted this folder, go ahead and try reinstalling.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi @WRR & Quicken Anja,
@WRR is not alone. I have used Tax Planner many times this year, and it worked fine. I was able to open it, navigate between Tax Planner topics, edit values, and use NEXT, all without any problems. I believe my last good use of Tax Planner was 11/10/25, and probably Quicken R64.30 or R64.35.
But with this latest update (Quicken Classic, R65.17, Build 27.1.65.17, Windows 10), applied 11/27/25, I am getting those Tax Planner errors from Windows Installer trying to find source files.
- Generally I do NOT get the errors if I click the blue-links on the Tax Center's "Projected Tax" frame to open Tax Planner. I can edit values on the appropriate data-entry topic and close the popup. But if I click NEXT or click on the Tax Planner's other menu-topics, then the Tax Planner triggers the Windows Installer.
- If I use the Tax Center's SHOW TAX PLANNER button, I almost always immediately get the Windows Installer messages while the Tax Planner window is opening.
- I have noticed when I cancel the Windows Installer sequence, it frequently immediately triggers the Windows Installer a second time, but I do not remember a third time while opening that window instance.
Since I worry that an Uninstall/ReInstall might delete my many Preferences & Customizations, I do not have time to reinstall now, but if you do, please post your success/failure results here. (Thanks!)
Attached below are sanitized screen shots of my Quicken showing the erroneous Windows Installer sequence.
On my system, I also saw the "Please wait while Windows configures Quicken" and "There are Quicken components currently open, and cannot be uninstalled. …" error messages that James White saw, and documented on thread "Windows Configuration Prompts When Opening Tax Planner". I suspect they are somewhat related.
Thanks.

Same issue. Why should I have to reinstall for an issue that Quicken seems to have introduced

Why should I have to reinstall for an issue that Quicken seems to have introduced
Not everyone gets these installer messages. The fact that you are getting them indicates that there is a problem with your installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling as described by @Quicken Anja will often resolve issues like those described here. Reinstalling should not cause any data issues, but to avoid any loss of data or settings, be sure you have current backups of all your active data files.

Because, apparently, you have a corrupted installation. Re-installing should remedy that.

I had the same issue. I was hesitant but made a backup, uninstalled according to the guidance from Quicken Anja and re-installed, Restored the backup file and all works fine

Hello All,
@KJDaubel2 Thanks for the detailed testing and screenshots—that’s extremely helpful. What you’re describing does align with an installation-level issue introduced or exposed after the recent update. While not ideal, a clean reinstall has resolved this behavior for many users without impacting data, provided a backup is made first. We appreciate you sharing your observations here—it helps others experiencing the same symptoms.
——@kchris I understand the frustration. While the issue surfaced after a recent update, it doesn’t affect all installations equally. As Jim_Harman and NotACPA explained above—when Windows Installer errors like this appear, it typically indicates corruption or missing components in the local installation, which is why a reinstall is recommended as the most reliable resolution.
——Reply to @Rigid Thanks for following up and confirming that a clean uninstall/reinstall resolved the issue for you. We appreciate you sharing your outcome—this is helpful for others running into the same problem.Thank you!

I had the exact same issue. I uninstalled and installed and it is working now. I was hesitant to do it but it took me less than 30 minutes to uninstall and do a clean reinstall.
