What is the right way to notify moderators about a question in the wrong category?

In the past I have been using the "report" and just using inappropriate (only because there isn't any "other") and typing in a message to the affect that the question needs to be moved.

I now see that there is a new icon "off topic". Is this what should be used now? It only seems to be a flag so even if this is the right one the moderator would have to understand it without any comment.

@Chris_QPW In the upper right of a post, what icons do you see? (I'm not sure what features may be enabled for SUs and not available to everyone else.) Do you have an icon which looks like a flag?

If so, click the flag and you'll see a pop-up menu which gives you an option to flag a moderator and type a comment about moving the post to a different category.

If not, I don't think moderators monitor the social icons under a post. I sometimes just write a note in a post like "MODERATORS: Please move this…" and hope they notice it.

Yes, that is the "report" I have been using. I was just wondering if the new "off topic" is the right/better way.

If I remember correctly the options you get for flagging a post if you’re not a superuser are only the negative ones that suggest the content of the post is problematic in some way, so none of them seem like good options to use for this. Hopefully one of the moderators will weigh in with their preference.

I don't think the off-topic icon does anything to flag it for moderators; I think it's more of a social rating of a post, like the helpful, unhelpful and LOL ones. But the flag icon reports do go directly into a message queue for the moderators, and usually get fairly quick attention.

Here is the regular user list that the Flag presents:

Superusers have an expanded list which has "Moderator review" and "Other" choices which would be appropriate for using to report an "wrong category" condition which I use myself.

The Flag list for regular user should have at least "Other" added. @Quicken Janean (hint, hint)

It is interesting that SuperUsers get those two extras. For the life of me I can't understand why they didn't give regular users the other two, especially "Other". What do they think that only thing a regular user wants is complain?

Maybe, or perhaps the Mods didn't wanted to be inundated with every user's trivial issue.

I usually use flag with option Move or Merge and suggest a target category in the comment section. Out of the options available to regular forum users, I guess I would go with the Inappropriate option.

Agree it would be a good idea for regular forum users to have options other than the limited choices currently available to them.

@Chris_QPW, the way you and @mshiggins have discussed using the flag/report feature seems like the most logical approach with the options you have available to you.
