Automatic Backup - backup directory behavior change

Quicken Classic Business & Personal Version R59.10 Build 27.1.59.10, OS Windows 11

@Quicken Kristina perhaps you can help answer this…

Backup and restore worked fine before; each Quicken file backed up to its own backup directory.

It appears that Quicken has changed the Local Backup – Automatic local backups feature from a per Quicken file backup directory to only one backup directory for all Quicken files.

All my Quicken files started backing up to the last backup directory used before this change occurred.

If I try to change the backup directory for the Quicken file currently in use to its correct backup directory, all subsequent backups of other Quicken files are saved to this same directory.

Now, for my use case and work flow, I have to turn off automatic backups and manually back up to the correct backup directory for the Quicken file in use before closing the file.

This isn't ideal; why break something that has worked correctly forever? Could it be a feature/bug coinciding with the Online Backup changes? Note: I do not use Online Backup.

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

    What version Quicken and what OS?

    Just to make sure I understand (and perhaps others), you have multiple Quicken files (ie. qdata123, qdata456, etc.). So backups for qdata123 used to go into their own backup folder separate from qdata456, but now they're all going into the same folder? Are all the qdata files in the same folder?

    @nmestanas

    Thanks for your reply, I updated the first post with Quicken Version and OS.

    The scenario you posed in your first question is correct, so yes.

    There is a parent folder "Quicken" and in that folder each Quicken file has its own folder with a child Backup folder within it, so the answer to your second question is no.

    As I said earlier; Backup and restore worked fine before; each Quicken file backed up to its own backup directory.

    In addition to the issues posted in the first post, I have "Manual backup reminder" enabled and "Remind me after running Quicken:" set to 1, and I do not receive a reminder to backup.

    Hello @larryvc,

    I haven't noticed the behavior you mentioned, but it's also not something I've previously paid attention to. You should be able to view/change your file's automatic backup directory by going to Edit>Preferences>Backup, then clicking the blue Change link.

    When I test in R59.10, I do see the current behavior is that changing the automatic backup directory does seem to be a program level change rather than unique for each Quicken file on the computer. When did you first notice this change? Do you recall which version of Quicken you were using when this behavior changed?

    The discussion on the manual backup reminder issue can be found here:

    I look forward to your reply!

    @Quicken Kristina,

    Thank you for the reply.

    Edited my original reply: had to reread your reply…

    It seems we are in agreement that "Change backup directory" is program level and not per file now. Noticed the change with update to Quicken Classic Business & Personal Version R59.10 Build 27.1.59.10. Like I said, this isn't ideal.

    As for the manual backup reminder issue and the suggested fixes, I find it very disturbing that we as paying Quicken customers would have to go to such lengths to repair our installs. I have several Quicken files with multiple online accounts that would all have to be reactivated. This is something that Quicken should be addressing and providing a fix for.

    @Quicken Kristina,

    Now that we know that all backups are going into one folder in R59.10 Build 27.1.59.10, then how does the "Maximum number of backup copies" get applied if the count is exceeded?

    Is it going to delete the oldest current Quicken file filename-date.time.QDF-backup file to that count, or is it going to delete the oldest file in the folder regardless of which Quicken file the backup belongs to?

    The above is kind of a moot point now that I found the real problem, see below, unless it doesn't get remedied.

    "Change backup directory" now adds this to the C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Quicken\config\QUSER.INI file

    [AutoBackupPath]
    AutoBackup=C:\Users\username\PathToWhereTheDirectoryWasChangedTo

    This was not the case in the earlier builds, they were either following entries under the [RecentBackupPaths] in that same file or just defaulting to use the Backup directory within the Quicken file directory. I confirmed this with my system backup files from before the upgrade to this build took place.

    Removed those two lines from the QUSER.INI file, opened and closed several Quicken files with "Automatic local backups" enabled, times set to 1, and miraculously all the backups went to the correct backup folders.

    Now, if Quicken software developers are listening, I'm submitting a pull request to revert the code for "Change backup directory" to what it was before this build, or whenever this code change occured! I'll send you my invoice soon.
