I am having what sounds like the same problem. After years of working well together, Quicken stopping downloading transactions from Vanguard. quicken will still report the total value of accounts, but no new transactions. I think this coincided with a quicken update. If I disconnect and reconnect the accounts, Quicken tells me Vanguard only supports Simple downloads (no transactions). Another option (Detailed downloads) is grayed out/unavaiilable. I've called Vanguard which denies responsibility or changing their practices.

Today I called Quicken tech support and a 3d party rep who is providing Quicken tech support said there is a workaround- clicking on the Option key and hitting transactions. Sure enough transactions show up, but unfortunately all or mostly garbage transactions, such as buying and selling 0 shares and dividends from unidentified payers.

    Please help, Quicken.

FWIW, I don't have any trouble connecting to Vanguard using Direct Connect with the first entry in the list above (titled simply "Vanguard"); I only have a single Roth IRA account there.

    Hello @JeffMacQkn,

I suggest following what @Jon suggested. You can do so by clicking the instance seen below > clicking Advanced > Direct Connect > Next > Then signing in using your normal log-in information.

Let us know how it goes!

Jon and Jasmine, I was able to link that way. Unfortunately my quicken vanguard accounts are full of junk transactions, such as adding and deleting shares. I think I've fixed 3 of them, but one continues to show way more value than it actually has, so this has messed up my accounting. Not sure how to correct it.

I think it is important to note how Simple investment mode works.

What it does is look at the "summary information" downloaded from the financial institution (downloading of investment consists of transactions and a summary of the number of shares in each security and the cash balance), and it will use add/remove shares and misc income/expense to make what Quicken has match what the financial institution sent. (Complete investing mode uses just the transactions).

So, if for any reason you switch into Simple investment mode you can expect Quicken to be adding/deleting shares and making misc transactions.

Thanks for explaining. I did not want to switch into simple mode, but after a quick update, I could only use simple mode with brokerage company accounts. I use some advice to get back to detailed account mode and now stuck with the junk transactions. Not a good experience with. Not sure how to fix my accounts which now have very inaccurate balances.

    Hello @JeffMacQkn,

I believe that your incorrect balances are related to the transactions. Are you able to delete these "junk" transactions?

    Let me know!

    Hello @JeffMacQkn,

Do you have placeholders by chance? You can check by navigating to the specific account > scrolling to the bottom of the register > and seeing if there are any greyed-out transactions.

    Let me know!

Do you have to do anything special to see placeholders on Quicken Mac? On Quicken Windows you have to select an option that says to show the "hidden transactions".

I do have some placeholders. They are from 2017. I'm not sure anymore, but the Vanguard account may have been open before that date, and I might have used those to bring the 2017 "starting balance" up to what it was when I added it to Quicken. Almost all the transactions are Add Shares or Remove Shares.

I'm scared to delete them. Trying to analyze what would happen if I did.

Note that if your Vangard account is older than when Quicken could have retrieved when it was first started, you would have gotten placeholder like you said so that your Quicken register would start out agreeing with what the financial institution had. Even though some people prefer to change those to actual buys you can leave them. The "problem transactions" that you would be wanting to remove/change would be from the date that Quicken change to Simple mode, not before that date. This is assuming that your account was reconciled before this problem started happening.
