How can Intuit still be getting it wrong?

I have been using Quicken Deluxe for years. For years there have been hundreds of downloads to fix bugs. For the love of God get it right already.

No matter if it's a purchase at Dollar General, CVS, Amazon, A grocery store, a gas station, Target, you name it, it gets downloaded as Garmin and the category is automotive. Seriously Intuit? Seriously? Just do us all a favor and give it up already.

Oh, and before it comes, let me guess it somebody else's fault.

Check your Renaming Rules. It looks like one, or more, is TOO generic and is changing too much.

Also, what FI are you downloading these from, and what's your download method (e.g., Direct Connect, Express Web Connect, etc) into this account.

With that info, we can tell you what downloaded file to look into to see what is actually being sent … but this DOESN'T look at all like an Intuit error.

This wasn't a problem last month, and if something isn't broke I don't fix it. So…

Then I doubt that anyone can help you. I know that I can't help without the additional info.

If there is an incorrect download method, I should not be able to select it for my account.

What does the download method have to do with the payee's name? There are various different downloading methods, but none of them are going to have a "fixed payee name" for all the transactions.

And have you checked the Downloaded Payee name?

Given that it isn't one fixed value, which I seriously doubt then you need to look to your renaming rules as @NotACPA said.

And note that Quicken hasn't been owned by Intuit for many years. Intuit provides the connection services (the aggregator) for Quicken Inc (the current owners of Quicken), and as such have some "influence" of what the downloaded payee name is, but none of what your renaming rules are doing. Note there is also a preference to have Quicken use its idea of what the payee's name should be, but that is only used if your renaming rules don't apply, and it isn't going to be a fixed value like you are describing.

Again, this wasn't an issue last month and should not be now.

If nothing has changed it would be the same. So, something has changed, and you have not supplied anything that suggests that the change isn't in your data file, only jumped to the conclusion that it must be "Intuit". And given that no other user has been affected, that seems unlikely.

The various download methods store the download in different files, which is why I asked about the download method.

Also, the different download methods have different techniques for acquiring the info from the FI. So, again, that question.

I have three accounts at said FI and the Garmin downloads only occurred between Jan 7 and February 1st. There were probably 175 incorrect entries.

All my accounts use the same express web connect and they have for a very long time. Actually, on January 31st the last two transactions downloaded correctly and this continued through today, February 3rd. None of them mention Garmin and there are 20+. Enough is enough here.

It's STILL a Renaming issue. Have you even bothered to look at the Downloaded Payee field in the register???

Another issue that has been going on with Quicken is that it can't put the dates in chronological order. Seriously.

A renaming issue? Yes, it is a renaming issue, that's what I am complaining about! But how does quicken go from getting it right, to getting wrong, to getting it right again?

Do you know how much work it would be to manually rename all of those transactions?

I have to reinvent the way I am doing things, quicken doesn't cut it for me anymore.

Maybe I will use quicken basic as a ledger, I don't know.

Something else that I have had trouble with Quicken recently is that it could not do math accurately. Seriously. If I entered a transaction that was $100 the balance was not $100 less. I believe Intuit reset my account during that phone call.

So we have, unchronological dates, incorrect math, and downloaded transactions where every payee is wrong.

To help troubleshoot, it seems they are the transactions where I swiped my debit card only. Checks, electronic bill pay all seemed fine. I deleted all of them yesterday to confirm but that's the way it looked. Not sure though, Amazon wasn't mentioned so… I have too much going on to be bothered with correcting that many transactions.

I have been using Quicken for almost 30 years. Certainly transaction download has been one of my banes. However, except for a rough transition from Direct Connect to EWC+ a couple of years ago, I am finding that one step update is working very well. I have a load of renaming rules which seem to work and I correct any Quicken supplied name that I don't like at the time I review and match transactions. Except for an occasional $0.01 discrepancy between an investment account value and the value reported by the financial institution I have not seen any Quicken math problems and if a register balance seems off it often is caused by me entering a transaction as a deposit rather than payment or vice versa. Quicken offers a number of ways to sort transactions in a register. I sort by cleared and there occasionally may be a transaction out of chronological order because I manually match a transaction. Of course I could sort by something like category and throw the register into chronological disarray.

For the umpteenth time, what's in the "Downloaded Payee" field of one of those transactions? And in the corresponding Payee field?

And, re: chronological order … at the top of the account register, which column header has an arrowhead next to the title and which way is it pointing. That's how your account is currently sorted BY YOUR DOING! Click the Date header to correct.
