Report on Investment Options
I'm running Quicken for MAC Version 8.2.1 (Build 802.57282.100). My investments include Bonds, Options, and Stocks which are nicely organized and displayed in the Portfolio view of my account. I'm trying to get a report that will show only "Options" activity. If I filter on the categories of "Buy to Cover" and "Sell Short" this works for any Options I have sold. However, when I buy an option, it's category when downloaded is "Buy", which looks just like a stock purchase. Therefore, if you check that category, you get both Options purchased AND Stocks. Clearly there is a hidden tag/category, since the Portfolio view can distinguish between Stocks and Options. How can I access that tag in a report filter??

@Quicken Jasmine @BRETTB The original post by @mark-s describes that he is using Quicken Mac, and unfortunately @BRETTB's response is for Quicken Windows, and there are somewhat significant differences between the two programs when it comes to investment organization and reporting.
@mark-s I don't think you can filter for just Options in the Transactions tab. The Portfolio screen can separate/sort your Options securities because they are defined with Type=Option, but Security Type is not a field in the Transactions screen. But I don't do options trading, so I can't say for sure. Is there anything unique in the Description or Memos column for options activity? Hopefully another user or @Quicken Jasmine can chime in.

Hello @mark-s,
Thanks for your clear and detailed post, and I appreciate @jacobs jumping in to clarify the platform distinction! You're right that this thread has mixed info from both Quicken Mac and Windows, and the differences between the two can be subtle but important when it comes to investments and reporting.
To directly address your question: You're correct that the Portfolio view in Quicken Mac can distinguish between stocks and options because it uses the Security Type defined in each security’s setup. However, the Investment Transaction report and the Transactions view do not expose Security Type as a filterable field. This means when you filter by the “Buy” action, it includes both stock and option purchases without a way to separate them.
Unfortunately, this behavior is expected in Quicken for Mac 8.2.1. At this time, there is no built-in way to generate a report showing only Options activity, since “Buy” transactions for options and stocks are treated the same in the reporting filters.
Here are two workaround options that some users find helpful:
- Use consistent naming or patterns in the Security Name or Description fields.
If your brokerage downloads option symbols with unique identifiers (e.g., includes "CALL" or expiration date info), you can try searching or filtering reports by keywords in the Description field. This isn't perfect but can help isolate option-related transactions. - Use Tags manually.
If you're regularly trading options, you can add a specific Tag (like “Options2025”) to those transactions. Then run reports filtered by Tag. This does require manual tagging, but it makes future filtering possible.
There isn’t currently a way to filter by Security Type in reports, though it is used behind the scenes in the Portfolio view. Jacobs' reply was spot-on in calling out that limitation.
If you’d like to see this capability improved, you can follow or vote on this Idea thread in the Quicken Mac section:
You can also create an idea post if the above thread does not fit exactly what you are looking for. This way, other users who have the same or a similar request can vote on your idea.
Let me know if you'd like help setting up tags or customizing your Portfolio view as a partial workaround.

Thank you ALL for the replies and I apologize for the delay in responding, we've been on vacation and I'm just getting caught up. @QuickenJasmine I'm glad to know I was not going crazy just missing something and I had a feeing that Security Type had to be a field in there somewhere. 😁 I will vote for that to be made available, as it should help a number of folks who want to run various reports using that filter. Thank you for the other suggestions, I will give them a try, but I'm doing enough trading that it may be too cumbersome. I've been a Quicken user on Windows since it's initial launch and just recently moved to the MAC, so I'm still learning the differences, but overall I love the product. You all are doing a wonderful job and I look forward to things to come. FWIW, I'm never going back to Windows, so I'm all in. LOL
