Fix Validate/Repair Messing Up Tax Planner

I've started to realise most of the issues I have with Quicken are just existing bugs that are better reported here for fixing than in the errors/troubleshooting section. So here we go.

When I do a validate/repair in Quicken for Windows, it notifies me in the logs that an issue with my paycheck has been corrected. There is no issue with my paycheck, and when I look at the paycheck it is fine. But when I go to the tax planner, suddenly my numbers are wrong. My tax due decreases. Turns out, the capital gains I owe disappear after the the validate/repair. This happens for both regular validate and super validate. Then, if I click into the edit screen for one of my paychecks, click done, then return to the tax planner, my capital gains are back, and my tax due is correct.

Also, I can't just validate and repair then click edit in the paycheck. I first have to go to the tax center, then go back to edit the paycheck. If I just edit the paycheck right away, the tax planner will remain incorrect. Please fix this. It's really annoying.

    @recursor1 This is excellent sleuthing!

When you say the capital gains are gone, what exactly has happened?

If you click on the capital gains line in the Tax Planner and look at the section at the bottom, has the setting changed from Quicken data to User entered with a value of zero, or is it something else?

Similar to the paycheck, there is nothing wrong once you go click on the tax planner where you can edit it. It is the display in the tax center after validate that seems to become bugged. The capital gains link disappears, as if I haven't had any capital gains this year, and all the other numbers become wrong as a result. The total capital gains are still in the taxable income ytd card below the tax planner card too, and seem correct. It's just the tax planner card that becomes bugged.

@Jim_Harman , also just noticed that the projected tax card corrects if you merely open the tax planner. In other words, something is not correctly being displayed in the card until a recalculation occurs. That's why editing the paycheck fixes it. It triggers a recalculation.

    Hello @recursor1,

Thank you for letting us know you're seeing this issue. There was a known issue with the Tax Planner showing incorrect information due to it not refreshing (QWIN-24394), but that was fixed in R61. When did you first notice this issue? Does it happen only when you validate your file? If not, what other actions trigger this behavior?

I look forward to your response!

I suspect your paycheck is having its splits jumbled after OSU. That is an ongoing issue for some group of users. Tax Planner is my first indication of reminder splits being jumbled because as you found, the tax owed changes.

Tax Planner also gets wonky when it encounters a corrupted reminder and can switch projections to User Entered or Based on YTD. Validate is seeing a corrupted paycheck. The jumble of splits can cause new corruption or retrieve the corrupted reminder from the cloud.

Sometimes, I do still see the cap gains calc in the Planning tab view come up with a weird value and then when the planner is opened it corrects itself.

I think you are seeing a couple of different issues, but both issues change expected values in Tax Planner.

Yes, @markus1957 , the issues you are describing sound like mine, and yes, I agree, I'm experiencing multiple but related issues, and I am one of the users in that group. I've done everything possible to avoid it, and I have a hard time believing that there is a Windows 11 Quicken Premier user out there who doesn't experience it: it's gotta be a widespread problem. I just don't think all users pay attention to the tax planner. @Quicken Kristina , as far as I know this has been going on probably since I became a member, which is almost 2 years ago.

I'm assuming you don't have Mobile Sync turned On. That being the case there is still some syncing going on during OSU that jumbles the reminders. Knock on wood but it has been a couple of weeks since I've seen the issue. I've tried everything I could think of to fix it and for a while was only making incremental progress. Crossing my fingers until it happens again. This will not fix the Planning tab, Tax Center screen refresh issue, but it will be less frequently noticeable if the cloud stops corrupting your paycheck reminder.

What I did, not in order but in order of how I would do it now-

    1. Complete uninstall and reinstall of the software and update to latest version. That means first a normal Uninstall and then deleting hidden Program Data\Quicken and Users\[username]\App Data\Quicken\Roaming folders. Also deleting Program Files (x86)\Quicken folder. Then rebooting and downloading the Quicken installer from your Quicken account. Don't use an old installer file even if it looks the same. Do not let the installer launch Quicken after installing, just close it and then reopen Quicken with the Ctrl key so you can select your desired datafile to open. Verify you are the latest release.
    2. Once the datafile is open after signing in with your Quicken ID, Validate your datafile. Verify your reminders are intact as expected. If not fix them and keep validating the file until you no longer get a fixed a corrupted paycheck or reminder notice in the log.
    3. Go to Mobile Sync and turn it On. Deselect all of your accounts from Syncing to the cloud. Then Reset the cloud file without first syncing. After it completes the reset, check your reminders to verify they are intact. If not, correct them and repeat Step 2, then reset the cloud file again. Check your reminders after the reset and validate again to make sure the fixed corrupted paycheck reminder notice does not appear. The purpose of Step 3 is to beat the cloud file into submission so that it contains an uncorrupted version of your file.
    4. Go to OSU settings and uncheck the Cloud Sync box. Apply the setting and close the window. Then turn OFF mobile sync.
    5. Close Quicken, let OneDrive finish syncing the file and then reopen it and perform an OSU. After OSU completes, check your reminders to see if they are still intact.

The time suck of keeping Quicken semi-functional is absurd.

@markus1957 , as far as I can tell, the issue is with billing. If I add online bills, that's when I start having problems with the paychecks specifically.
