You can't hide them in the list, but if you go in and edit one, you can disable (uncheck) updating security prices for that security. Yes, that would be a pain you would have to repeat 140 times, but it should cut down time spend updating all the quotes.

Thanks for the tip, but it seems there should be an easier way than this. Hopefully Quicken's staff will look into this as anyone with many years of investment tracking will run into this on conversion or upgrade.QMac Subscription - iMac - Quicken Mac user since 19950 -
Did what John counseled a few months ago; had hundreds of securities which came over in the transition from QW to Qm. Took awhile but was worth the effort. Was not able to delete securities which have been inactive for many , many yrs because Qm got it in its head that the securities were being used elsewhere. Decided to just ignore that issue:)0
-
I understand why you'd do that on some level, but it seems to make more sense to have something simply built into the software. Thanks.QMac Subscription - iMac - Quicken Mac user since 19950

You have Buys, Sells, Dividends or/or other transactions for these securities recorded in your registers. As long as thise transactions exist somewhere in your data file, QMac considers the security "in use".
The only way one can delete a previously used security is to first delete any and all transactions related to that security. This of course would totally srew up the register (and your history) and is not the recommended way to go.
FWIW QWin products have the same behavior.
Bottom line - we do need the ability to hide old securities in the Security List. Also need an easier way to turn downloading on/off - like in QWin where there is a check box in the list along side each security.QWin & QMac (Deluxe) Subscription

I agree that we need someway simply to hide the old securities easily. A checkbox in the Security's list similar to what's in the accounts list in QM2016 3.5.2 would be very helpful. That's really all I hoping for.QMac Subscription - iMac - Quicken Mac user since 19950

Yes I recall you QW have the same issues. As others have said there needs to be a way to hide the securities so they don't show up in the security detail unless one wants them to.0

I got bored and actually did this. It's sped up the program at opening, but it's still annoying.John in NC said:You can't hide them in the list, but if you go in and edit one, you can disable (uncheck) updating security prices for that security. I trade a lot of options and track my activity with Quicken. Once the option has expired, the security will never be used again. My securities list has hundreds of old options that pop up when entering transactions. I have marked them as "hidden" but they still appear in the list of securities when I enter a transaction. Hidden securities SHOULD NOT appear on this list. How do we stop it from appearing?0
-
This is an ongoing problem acknowledged by the folks at QM, they have committed to resolving this in the future0
-
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem (I hope): I never realized that securities I no longer own, and which are not listed in my Portfolio view, continue to download the share price! I see how to turn this off one-by-one in the securities window, but this seems unnecessarily cumbersome and more important likely to lead to problems if I ever re-purchase a deactivated security. I can imagine forgetting this years later and then trying to troubleshoot why it's not downloading quotes.0
-
It is a horrible kluge, but this works: In the name of each unused security, I put "Z - " in front of the name. So, WMT, Walmart, will now be "Z - Walmart". So, all my unused securities show up at the very bottom of the pull-down list, so they are out of my way, but yet in alphabetical order (in the Z position) in case they ever get used again. If I buy it again, I rename it back to its original name.0

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to add a small update to this idea.
In the 2019 5.9.2 for Mac, the option to Download Quotes Only for Indexes and Securities Held.
This can be found under Window > Securities.

Thanks Tyka, that is nice, but of course it does not help get the unused securities out of sight.Quicken Tyka said:Hello everyone!

When entering a Buy or a Sell transaction, Quicken presents a Securities List drop-down that includes every fixed income security every owned which is insane... since matured fixed income securities can neither be bought or sold. Once matured, they basically do not exist any longer!! (Other than to show up in reports and historical transactions in the register.)
I have over 100 matured CD's, Treasuries and Bonds that I have to scroll through every time I enter any transaction that involves the Securities drop-down list. An example is shown below - truncated to just a few matured Treasuries for illustration. You'll notice that all maturity dates are shown ..and are years ago.
If I open the Securities list to edit any one of these matured fixed income investments ... there is no checkmark or method to mark them as "inactive" or otherwise hide them once they have matured. (Further, the maturity date is shown there and known to Quicken, so hiding them as inactive / unavailable should simply be automatic.)
Please add your vote and comments :-)

It's not much of a fix, but as something of a work-around: if you want to take a few minutes to edit the name of each of these securities to have a "z" prefix, then you won't need to see them/scroll through them in the security drop-down menu because they'll be at the bottom of the list. I do this with all my formerly-held securities, until such time as the developers create a way to hide such securities from the list.
I'll also note that there is a longstanding Idea thread for allowing securities no longer owned to be hidden. And miraculously, this is one of the handful of Ideas marked as "Planned"! That's the good news. The bad news: it was marked as Planned back in August 2020, and it still hasn't been released after nearly 30 months… so who knows when it will actually see the light of day.Quicken Mac Subscription • Quicken user since 19931 -
Thanks for finding that thread, @jacobs
I did search before posting, but didn't find it. I just hope that 2.5 years later, we'll see this implemented sooner than later...
I do think that there is a subtle difference between that wish and this one in that the fixed income issue raised above isn't just one of 'securities no longer owned' - but things that are still 'ownable'... e.g., I don't own GOOG but I could go buy some. WIth the fixed income securities... it is impossible to own these things. They literally no longer exist.Quicken user since 1990, MacBook Pro M2 Max on Sequoia 15.2

I found a work around. In your portfolio display, select Options, customize current view, securities, locate the CD you don't want to show anymore and uncheck the box for that security then click OK. This security will now be hidden from your Portfolio view.

If this worked (and I can't seem to make it work), it has no impact on drop-down lists… so when you go to do a Buy or Sell transaction, all of those "dead" matured CD's and bonds will still show up in the lists. That's the major impact - with no workaround.
Hiding in Portfolio view makes no sense, as a matured bond or CD (or a sold security) will NOT show up in portfolio view in the first place.
Lastly, I must be missing something - or else you are looking at Quicken Windows? - as there is no customization of the Portfolio tab that allows you to select which securities are displayed in QMac. Where do you see this option?

Now that Quicken Classic for Mac 7.6 has added the ability to hide Categories and Tags… how about folks voting for and giving a little love to this wish so that the Securities list will have the same feature? 😀

This wish could probably be merged with this one:
as the resulting functionality would be the same. (With matured fixed income securities, Quicken could automatically hide them after maturity… as the only real difference. Matured bonds can never be purchased again so it's just dumb for them to still who up everywhere.)

@MontanaKarl As you note, this is already marked as a Planned feature in the other thread. I'm not sure why this thread wasn't merged with that one, since there's basically asking for the same thing, unless you wanted bonds to auto-hide at maturity. Is there a reason you think users should vote for this thread separately?

Auto-hide would be nice, but this should really just be merged with the other planned (hurray) wish. :-)

As of Dec 2024, I guess there's still no fix. Meanwhile, my fixed income securities list keeps growing…
