How to re-reconcile

Quicken Mac 2016 Member ✭✭

The month of October reconciled with no error. I happened to discover the info behind a particular transaction (— the Payee, clarified). The right thing would have been just to edit the Payee in that transaction. But I did the wrong thing: add a new transaction and delete the reconciled one.

1.) Re-reconciling the statement doesn't allow me to clear the reconciliation marks, which makes the reconciliation visually clumsy

2.) The re-reconciliation's header and the bank statement AGREE — to the penny — on the amount of payments and deposits. But still it insists that I need a $2 tare.

Quicken:

Bank Statement:

FUBAR. I'd love to trash the OCT '24 reconciliation, and start over. Can I do this?

@yardbird_1 If you just recently deleted and replaced the transaction, it might be easier to restore from a recent backup than to fight with re-reconciling. Just a thought…

    Hello @yardbird_1,

    Thank you for reaching out!

When you deleted the reconciled transaction and added a new one, did you ensure the replacement transaction had the exact same details, including the date, amount, and category? Have you checked if there are any duplicate transactions that might be causing the $2 discrepancy? When you attempted to re-reconcile, did Quicken prompt you to enter an adjustment, and if so, where did it apply the difference? Have you reviewed your opening balance to see if it changed unexpectedly? Since you mentioned that you’d like to trash the October 2024 reconciliation and start over, have you tried manually changing all reconciled (“R”) transactions for that month back to cleared (“C”) or blank? Does Quicken still insist on a $2 adjustment after doing so? If you compare your transaction list with your bank statement, do you see any minor rounding errors, missing entries, or extra transactions that might explain the discrepancy? Also, have you checked whether Quicken automatically created a balance adjustment in the register that could be affecting the reconciliation?

Let me know what you find after checking these areas!

I did just that an hour later. I found a copy on TimeMachine saved just before I started the last, fatal reconciliation.

I now know what Quicken Classic Deluxe can't do.

Exactly what I needed at the time. But where was I supposed to find that? I opened another Re-Reconcile, and that didn't show up in any menus.

While you have solved this, another tip that would have made this easy to fix:

If you hold down OPTION while clicking on the reconcile/Clr checkbox in the register, you can force any transaction to a reconciled status. This would have avoided the need to re-reconcile an older period.

It is also useful to know this trick for a variety of reasons.

This should be automatic… to change ALL reconciled transactions back to Clr only when you click Re-reconcile…. that is how QM2007 works. Then when you click Reconcile, all those transactions that are still Clr get re-set to Reconciled. That is how it should work.

That is how it should work.

    But it’s not how re-reconcile works. 😉

Thanks to all for the commands necessary to use Quicken Classic Deluxe's Re-Reconcile. I'll have to call them "undocumented calls", until Quicken Jasmine tells me where they are documented. (I do like manuals, but it sure weren't what Quicken makes available: "Help" or "Learning Center".

I'm grateful for the reliable help available from fellow Quicken users here. (I'll probably be back again <G>).
