Vanguard accounts download security closing prices as $0 on some (but not all) days

The link below includes questions/discussion about Vanguard balances being set to zero on some (but not all) days due to the security details downloading with $0 as the closing price. I tried the suggestion at the end of the discussion but that didn't fix the issue.
Does anyone have other ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Jasmine,
Yes, this issue is still ongoing. Thanks!

Just for clarity here, the problem is with the downloaded security prices, not with your actual Vanguard holdings, correct? That is, when you open the Price History screen for one or more Vanguard securities, it shows a Closing Price of zero on random days, right. (This is what the screenshot you posted on the other thread shows.)
If that's the case, the problem doesn't appear to be with Vanguard at all, because Quicken doesn't obtain the daily security prices from each financial institution directly; Quicken uses a third-party provider to provide its quotes (security price data), and it seems the problem lies there. And you've tried signing out of Quicken and signing back in, as suggested in the thread you linked above, and the problem continues to happen? (Signing Out/In wouldn't correct past problems, but you're saying after doing that, you've had new instances of a day with zeros?)
Have you tried clicking on Rebuild Price History on that screen, to force Quicken to re-download data from the past 5 years for that security? (I would suggest creating a backup first, just in case things go from bad to worse. 😉) Does that fix the problem, or does it remain?

Thanks, @jacobs.
You summarized the issue correctly. The problem is the downloaded security prices. The correct number of shares are shown but the closing prices for shares of funds in the 401k account are $0 on some/random days.
I did try signing out/in from Quicken (as suggested in the thread linked above) but the problem still persists. The $0 prices on 5/12 occurred after I signed out/in.
I would be surprised if Quicken obtained the fund prices from a third party other than Vanguard. These particular funds are white labeled collective investment trust funds within the 401(k). They are a custom mix of funds specific to this 401k plan and don't have a public ticker (they actually don't have a ticker at all). Since they don't have a ticker, it's not possible to rebuild the index. I tried the rebuild option, but Quicken threw off an error of "Missing Security Ticker Symbol (unable to download a price history for a security without a valid ticker symbol." It seems like Quicken would have to get the price information from Vanguard because the funds are custom/specific to the 401k plan rather than publicly available mutual funds.
When I refreshed today, the fund prices were back to normal (see the attached picture). The prices appear to have a day lag but it might just be that I refreshed before the final pricing information for today made its way to Vanguard (or wherever Quicken gets the prices for these funds).
Thanks for your help. If you have other suggestions, I'll give them a try.

If the fund doesn't have a ticker symbol (I have a few funds like that), it will only refresh when you actually update that account. Updating/refreshing your price histories won't update anything with these funds.
That doesn't help you as it really shouldn't matter who provides the data, be it Vanguard or anybody else. You shouldn't be getting closing prices of $0. Keep reporting it as a problem to Quicken.
Some of these funds don't get daily price updates, and I wonder if you get the $0 on said days. But even if that is the case, you should get the past prices and not $0. That certainly might not be the case here, though.

Ahhhhh… that changes things, indeed. I didn't even realize Quicken could obtain daily price data for securities without a ticker symbol except when there is a transaction. Is this actually a Vanguard fund, or something some other investment service puts together?) (And now that I'm looking at the dates in your screenshot above, it isn't pulling in prices on many days. Are there transactions for this security (buy, sell, dividend) on the dates shown, and not on the weekdays which are missing? Is there anything different about the transaction on May 12 versus the others? I'm also wondering: if you did your updates late at night or first thing in the morning whether something in the world would be "caught up" and prevent the zero days?
You ultimately may have to either delete the price for the days which come in with a price of zero, or manually enter the closing price from the transaction on that day.

Thanks, @John_in_NC and @jacobs. I haven't figured out a pattern for when the prices are updated vs $0s. The price updates occur on dates even when there aren't any transactions (buys, sells, transfers, etc.). I don't click update every day. I suppose perhaps the price history is only built on each day I click update in Quicken. I'll have to track that for a bit to know one way or the other. I hadn't thought about the idea that perhaps the collective investment trust (CIT) funds may not be priced every day. It seems like they have a price every time I go into the Vanguard site so I still think there's some sort of disconnect between Vanguard and Quicken. I also hadn't thought about the timing of the updates. I probably do typically do the updates in the evening so I'll also try in the morning to see if that has any impact.
My fallback plan is to manually delete the $0s. Not the end of the world, but kind of annoying. And I'll keep reporting this to Quicken to hopefully get a resolution at some point.
Thanks!

This may not apply to QMac, but in QWin there are situations where the quote provider will download incorrect quotes for securities with blank ticker symbols.
Because of this, it is a good idea to un-check the Download Quotes box in the Security List for any securities that are not publicly traded. This will not affect the quotes that come directly from Vanguard, and may resolve your zero price issue.

I'm a week into an experiment to see what happens if I only run the Quicken account update in the morning. My hypothesis is that when I run the update in the evening, sometimes the end of day pricing update for these white label mutual funds may not yet be completed and that Quicken grabs the $0 prices in those situations. So far, the morning updates have not triggered any $0 security prices (but it is only a week thus far). I'll check back in after a few more weeks with any updates about whether or not this continues working.
