What was the worst thing you've received while trick-or-treating?

When I was a kid, the worst things I'd receive were home-made treats. They weren't the worst because they were bad, but because, unless they came from the neighbors that my parents knew and trusted, they'd be discarded as potentially dangerous. What was the worst thing you've received when trick-or-treating?

I hope everyone has a wonderful October and a happy Halloween!

I moved to the U.S. at age 15 so trick-or-treating wasn’t a part of my childhood since it wasn’t a thing in my home country, Belgium. So, I’ll just use an example from my kids instead.

One thing they despised getting (and I personally am not a fan of either) is a small box of raisins. I recall the first time it was discovered in one of their buckets. My oldest opened it, took a bite, and you could tell he didn’t like what he tasted. Instead of saying something, he put his raisin box in his twin brother’s bucket and waited for him to eat them. His twin ended up having the same reaction and tried to put it back in the first twin’s bucket but he quickly covered the top of the bucket to block it from being dropped in there. 😅

After watching the entertaining back and forth between them, I stuck my hand out and told them to give it to me.

Oh yeah, raisins were pretty undesirable. I wasn't really a fan of candy corn either, or those big circus peanuts.

And then there were the years where I had braces and wasn't allowed to keep anything with caramel in it, so when I saw that going into the bag I knew I wouldn't be able to eat it.

Another vote for the box of raisins! We wanted candy, in most forms, and especially chocolate (and caramel), so the houses which were trying to promote something healthier by giving out raisins were a complete disappointement. (For that matter, I didn't like Raisinettes, the chocolate coated raisins, either.)

I can't remember anything dropped in my trick-or-treat bag that I didn't like. Seems we lived in a candy neighborhood, everybody I know got candy 😃 Course, that was back in 1950's when I last trick-or-treated, things bit different back then. I remember buddy and me knocked on door of elderly man one Halloween and he said, "I'm sorry, I forgot this was Halloween, so didn't buy any candy. You aren't going to trick me are you?" I replied, "No sir, we wouldn't do that." At that time, I didn't even know what 'trick' meant 😂 Every so often what happened to that ole fella 😢

    Hello Everyone!

Honestly, I am not too sure. Maybe apples or pretzels? My favorite thing to get were little trinkets, I have always had a sensitive stomach, especially when it comes to chocolate!

A box of raisins is great! I didn't even mind a toothbrush. I wouldn't necessarily say this was the "worst" thing I ever got, but I thought it was funny one time I got a bag of ramen noodles.

When my niece, who's now a Veterinarian and the mother of teenage twins, was in prep school her family lived in the far distant suburbs of our town. But her school, and her friends, were much closer to where I live.

SO, she and a friend would spend Wednesday night at my house and carve the pumpkins … and they were exquisite.

Then, more friends would come over on Halloween night and go "Trick or Treating" for UNICEF. While they weren't specifically looking for candy, they got some of that also. Then they'd come back to the house and "horse trade" so that everyone got their preferred candy.

Well, after yesterday, there was a new "undesirable" placed in my twins' trick or treat bags (more like pillow cases really)— they received potatoes 🥔… from 2 separated homes. We were all very confused about it, but it gave us a good chuckle. I guess that's what we get for living in Idaho, and looks like dinner tonight will have something to do with potatoes. 😅

And just for fun; here's a photo of all 3 of my kids' costumes this year as well:

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Halloween! 🎃
