Cannot link Chase VISA credit cards

Earl Zier
Earl Zier Member ✭✭

When I attempt to link my Chase credit cards, I receive a message that my accounts must be added to Quicken. My accounts are added, and I have no problem downloading transactions. If I try to add them again, I receive a message that they are already connected. I am using Quicken Deluxe for Windows at the latest revision. Chase is connected via express web connect+.

What makes it necessary for you to link your Chase credit cards? As you stated, the accounts are already connected with Express Web Connect+.

You cannot activate an account register in Quicken when it is already activated.
If, for some reason, it is necessary to reactivate an account, you can try to use "Reset Account" (from Edit Account Details, Online Services tab) or you can try to first deactivate all your Chase credit cards and then use Tools / Add Account to reactivate and reconnect them all to your existing Quicken account registers.

    Here are the screen shots.

I receive this when I try to link the account.

When I use the + to re-add the accounts I get this screen. As you can see it states that my accounts are already sharing data.

    Thanks for sending the pictures.
I think, there's a bit of confusion going on here.
If I understand this correctly, you're trying to link an Online Biller to your scheduled reminder so that you can pay your credit card or some other online biller. Your credit card accounts are already successfully activated for transaction downloading and you authorized Quicken/Intuit as a third party for downloading (2nd image).

IIRC, there is / was a problem with linking the Online Bill Manager to Chase. But, there was a message in the Release Notes for the R59.35 software update mentioning Bill Manager, Chase and a few other banks.
So, if you're not at the R59.35 release level, or better yet, at the R60.14 level (hot off the press this week) you may want to install the R60.14 level from https://www.quicken.com/support/update-and-patch-20182019-release-quicken-windows-subscription-product

Let me explain the problem since I am having the same issue. This error

occurs when trying to add Chase as an online biller to the bill manager. Are you saying that this has been resolved now?

Yes, I am trying to link the online bill to manual reminders. Just checked and I am at version R60.14 build 27.1.60.14.

Not fixed. Just tried a minute ago and have the same result.

In that case, please contact Quicken Support on the phone during posted hours of operation
They need to research and, most likely, escalate this to higher support levels.

Tonight I was able to get my Chase bill back by adding it as Marriott Rewards Credit Card instead of Chase. This is odd, because I thought I had tried this before.

Not really. Instead of selecting Chase as the bill payee, I selected Marriott Rewards Visa Card.

I had the same problem with Chase visa. I fixed it using BarryGraham's fix. I selected Marriot Rewards Visa Card.

I spent an hour on the phone with Quicken Support yesterday. Got esclated to second level. Bottom line is that it is a know problem with Chase (maybe others based on my experience); no fix is available at current time.

I do have one question for you, @Quicken Jasmine which is that although my bills are generally updating in Online Bills, none of them have downloaded PDFs of bills since September. Is that to be expected, i.e. did Quicken discontinue this feature?

    Hello @BarryGraham,

For billers that support documents, these are typically available several days after you receive notification of a new bill. If you were previously receiving PDF downloads from these billers and now are not, I invite you to look over the troubleshooting steps below. It is recommended to save a backup before proceeding.

Please navigate to the Bills & Income tab and click on the gear icon on the top-right. Then, click on Review and Repair > Review and Repair Online Billers in the dropdown menu.

Once that is done, see if the issue still continues to persist.

    Let me know!

I only recently repaired the billers and it didn't fix it. Billers that used to support documents (like American Express) are no longer sending them. Actually right now the only one that is, our of Amex, Chase, Pepco, Washington Gas and WSSC is Washington Gas.

Thank you for your reply @BarryGraham,

Chase does not support documents anymore. They used to, but discontinued that when they changed their connection method with us (to Express Web Connect +).

When I check Pepco, I can see that documents were supported, but there is currently an issue with documents not working. It is a known issue that is being worked on, but we have no ETA. I submitted a ticket to let our teams know that you're impacted by this issue.

Does WSSC stand for Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission? If so, then I can see that the connection with that online biller is currently showing as degraded, which means the connection currently isn't working, but it's a known issue that is being worked on. We do not currently have an ETA. I sent a ticket to let our teams know you're impacted by this issue.

There currently aren't any known issues with American Express documents not showing up. I sent a ticket to our teams to let them know you aren't receiving documents, so that they can investigate the issue. We do not have an ETA.

    Thank you!

Kristina, new problem with Chase and PNC online bill and reminder links. I have found that when I do the One-Step-Update of the accounts, the online bills disappear and only the links remain. Discover and AMEX are not affected. I must then do the linking process again for Chase and PNC accounts. Bill refresh was also selected during the update. One other thing about PNC. The online linked PNC bill only shows the total amount due.

Before One-Step-Update (OSU) was started I verified that all credit card online bills were linked to a reminder. This is necessary so that the debt amounts show in the projected spend account. The screen above shows the linked Chase accounts on the left, identified by the Chase logo, at the start of the update. A PNC Visa, not shown, also had the PNC logo indicating that it was linked. During the update the online bills disappeared as show in the Picture below. Only the reminds remain.

The manual bills appeared, and the online bills were no longer shown. No online bills remain in the bill folder. The next screen is a section of the bills folder showing that the Discover and Amex linked bill were not affected by the update. I forgot to mention that when I first reported the problem, I had checked to update the bill during OSU, but in this instance, bill update was not selected.

You can see the Amex and Discover bills are still linked, but the Chase accounts show only the reminders. The online bills are gone. Also gone is the PNC VIsa online bill which is not shown in the screenshot. So, the problem occurs at account update, doesn't affect Amex or Discover, but does affect PNC and Chase Visas. So, the common thread is either Visa, or some similar processing used by PNC and Chase. This is not only a Chase problem.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello @Earl Zier,

You stated that this happens with One Step Update, are you re-adding these billers or are they reappearing on their own? If they are reappearing on their own, are there any steps that you are taking before they appear?

    Let me know!

The online bill disappears but the reminder remains. I must then relink the reminders to the online biller. Then, I must link the online bill to the reminder. Then I must refresh the linked bill

to get the correct info. The screen shot above is after I edited the reminder and linked it to Chase accounts. You can see that separate bills show for the Chase Visa and Visa Freedom. A reminder and an online bill shown with the Chase logo. If I then check the online Chase bill to link it to the reminder the reminder will disappear. As you can see AMEX was not affected, and neither was Discover. This also happens for the PNC bank Visa. What is different between the Chase and Discover account updates and the Chase and PNC account updates? Getting tired of chasing faults in Quicken.

Just found another problem with the Chase Visa. I linked Visa Freedom reminder with the online bill shown above due on the 27th, but the entry does not show in the projected balance for the wallet spend account show in the reminder.

    Hello @Earl Zier,

I believe there may be an issue with your data file as linking an online biller to a manual reminder should show up. I invite you to review the instructions below. It is recommended to save a backup before proceeding.

    Validate:

    1. File
    2. Validate and Repair File...
    3. Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, proceed to Super Validate. If the issue is resolved after performing validation, then please disregard the instructions to Super Validate.

    Super Validate:

    1. File
    2. Hold CTRL + Shift and click Validate and Repair File...
    3. Super Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

Let me know how it goes!
