Issue with Merrill Lynch account since reauthorization - account balance is wrong [Edited]

@Michael Sloss - I suggest caution with deleting the deposit transaction too soon. I recently had a couple that I chose not to delete right away, waiting for the correct div transactions to post. They didn't. So I edited the erroneous ones by changing them to Div and added the memo field from the ML website activity page. Even the ones that do show up as correct Div trans are missing the memo field. This has been going on for over 2 months - way too long!

As I have posted previously on this thread, I have very recently gotten Div transactions posted as Deposit transactions even when they are not pending and I have gotten Div transactions posted as Div transactions even when they are pending. So YMMV. What I do is log onto the Merrill Lynch website and go to their recent activity page when doing OSU and then update the transactions downloaded as necessary. It may get a bit complicated, I once had a pending transaction (not a Div) that got downloaded as a "Null" transaction. I simply deleted it, expecting it to be downloaded again after being settled as had happened in a previous case. But it never downloaded again, so I had to manually enter it.

New update this a.m.:
Version R64.30 HF3(Sep, 2025)
-What's Fixed
- FIXED Improve cash and money market fund handling for Fidelity brokerage accounts connected via Express Web Connect+.
[Removed-Rant]

Good point. As a retired software developer, what I wonder about is: just what kind of fix could you make to the Quicken client app that would specifically fix only an error in cash and money market fund handling for Fidelity brokerage accounts?

…connected via Express Web Connect+. 😀
Also, in addition to my ML accounts, I have a Fidelity 401K. What emoji do I assign to that? Been getting nudges to reauthorize it.

Thank you for the updates @jdparker225,
We now have a Community Alert (linked below) for the known issues with Merrill Lynch transactions. If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you bookmark it to get notifications of any updates, once available, and to know when the issue is resolved.
For Fidelity, it seems like most of the issues have been resolved. There are a couple Community Alerts about the known issues:
I hope this helps!

The new change for Fidelity does NOT seem to apply to Merrill Lynch as that new option does NOT appear at all for Merrill.

New problem! I may not be getting any downloads via EWC+. I did an OSU on 9/30/2025 and there were no non-pending transactions to download but the on-line version of my brokerage account balance showed an increase in cash and that affected the balance. There is something squirrelly going on with cash balance on the ML website when there are pendng transactions but that's not what I want to discuss here. I tried OSU this morning, around 7:30-8:00 when the 9/30/2025 transactions were no longer pending but, still, no transactions downloaded. So I down loaded qfx file and this got the 9/30/2025 transactions. There was squirrelliness with qfx file processing but, again, that is not what I want to discuss here. Thinking that possibly that the EWC+ server hadn't gotten the update to make the transactions no longer pending, I decided to do another OSU tonight, hoping that the transactions I had to hand enter (because of the qfx squirrelliness) would show up in the download and match the hand entered transactions and they would go "cleared" in the transaction register upon accpetance. But nothing downloaded.
OK there are now a bunch of 10/01/2025 pending transactions that should be settled by tomorrow and be in that state on the EWC+ server by tomorrow evening. I will hold off doing an OSU until tomorrow eening to see what happens. I'll let you know.
As to the squirrelliness, I have to digest that a bit more but I can say this:
- Don't count on ML account balances to be correct on the ML web site if there are, or recently were, pending transactions. If you do your OSU on Sundays, you are more likely to see your Quicken data matching (almost) what is shown on the website.
- If you are connected to ML via EWC+ (you are forced to that now) and have been using it, don't think that using qfx file downloads as an occassional alternative will be completely painless. It will probably mostly work but there may be some things that need to be corrected.

There is a problem. OSU is not working at all for ML. There were no "interesting" transactions so the qfx download worked. Well, sort of. I then deactivated and reactivated online services (should have thought of that yesterday) and that got it working again. And the activation did an an OSU bringing down a pending transaction as a "null" transaction (not all of them, just one which should be a withdrawal) and bringing down 2 Intinc transactions that I don't need because they conflict with transaction that were previously downloaded through qfx yesterday. The date on the pending transaction is not the same as the date on the website (10/01/2025 vs 10/02/2025). I accepted the pending transaction, waiting to see what happens tomorrow.

Concerning the squirrelliness of mixing qfx file downloads with EWC+: ML EWC+ and Direct Connect (which is what qfx downloads mimic) have different ways of dealing with certain situations in that they generate different transactions. So if you do both covering the same time period you can get transactions you don't need. I have seen two examples:
- Dividends reinvested in stock purchases. With Direct Connect I got three transactions to deal with that: Div, Add, and Withdraw (I don't know why the last two weren't combined into a Bought). With EWC+ I get one transaction: ReinvDiv. When I did the qfx download after a successful OSU which provided the ReinvDiv, I got the Withdraw which was not needed. I am wondering why I did not get at least one of Div or Add, but I did not.
- Intinc. As I explained in previous post with Direct Connect, I would get in my brokerage account 2 Intinc transactions per month: one with the whole dollar amount for both of my two money market accounts and one for the "change" amount for both of the accounts. With EWC+ I get 4 Intinc transactions: a whole dollar amount transaction for each of the two accounts and a "change" transaction for each of the two accounts. When I did the qfx download, I got the Direct Connect pair. When I followed that with an OSU, I got two more Intinc transactions that I did not need.
Concerning the squirrelliness of ML website's account balances: I am still trying to figure out what is going on. It looks like ML website is trying to include pending transactions in the account balance (which Quicken cannot do because it does not get (or at least is not supposed to get) those transactions unless you turn on the new feature available with EWC+ to somehow include pending transactions) but isn't doing it right at least some of the time. I need to do more analysis on that but this really isn't a Quicken problem. What is of concern to Quicken users is that, if the ML website were working consistantly as I think ML intends it to, the balance on the website would differ form the balance in Quicken by the amount of pending transactions. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. Since I have not turned on the option to include pending transactions, I don't know how things would be if it were turned on and everything was working correctly.
One thing that is interesting is that, when I have compared ML statement data with Quicken holdings on that date with transactions from OSU/qfx updated to correct errors, things do match most of the time.

Thanks for the info. Helpful, if only to justify the continued frustration with my 7 Quicken accounts and good number of Merrill Lynch accounts.
I'm doing month end reconciliation today… More work than I've ever had with Merrill Lynch accounts via Quicken. Again, I DO NOT have the same issues with any other investment company, nor the parent company of Merrill Lynch, Bank of America via Quicken. I can't trust the EWC+, so now, every day I review if there are transactions on the Merrill Lynch web site and I do a manual QFX download for every account as needed. This method, for me, provides the best and most information, albeit with similar transaction downloads to the old Direct Connect that require three transactions for one reinvestment, for which, again, I manually consolidate the three into one reinvestment transaction. Then I do an EWC+ for price quote updates. During month end reconciliation, with some small number variables because I round to the 8th decimal because I force support for some cryptocurrency for which Quicken doesn't officially support, I then, most every month, have to go thru each stock or mutual find to pricing discrepancies and correct the Quicken prices to the Merrill Lynch statement numbers. I'm three hours in today reconciling statements, and I'm not done yet. Not issues with my other investment account via Quicken.
This cannot be this hard…or maybe it is and that's why Quicken paused the hard cutover date of 9/22/25…

I just received this via e-mail from Quicken today (10/8/25) for an event that happened between 9/20/25 and 9/22/25…
We would like to bring to your attention a recent issue that may have affected some Merrill Lynch account downloads in Quicken.
What happenedBetween 6:00 AM ET on Sept 20, 2025, and 11:30 PM ET on Sept 22, 2025, some transaction data from Bank of America/Merrill Lynch was sent incorrectly to Quicken. For some customers who downloaded during this period:
•
Some Buy, Sell, Reinvestment, and Transfer transactions may be missing
•
Dividend and Interest transactions to may appear as Deposits
•
Expense transactions (like Margin Interest) may appear as Withdrawals
This only affects accounts using Complete Investing.Simple Investing accounts are not impacted. Do you need to take action?
•
If your transactions look correct, you don’t need to do anything. You may not have been affected.
•
If you do notice missing or incorrect transactions, we’ve prepared step-by-step guidance on how to fix them.
If you are seeing these issues, read the complete FAQ & Fix Instructions. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you,The Quicken Team
RESOLVED 10/8/25 Merrill Lynch Transaction Issue
We have identified a bug with Merrill Lynch data that was sent to users between 6:00am ET on 9/20/25, through 11:30pm ET on 9/22/25, which caused the following issues:
All Buy, Reinvestment, Sell, and Transfer (In or Out) type transactions will not appear.
Dividend and Interest Income transactions will appear as Deposit transactions.
Any expense transactions such as MarginInt, will appear as Withdrawal.
This occurred in both Quicken Windows and Quicken Mac. This has been escalated internally with Merrill Lynch/Bank of America, however, the issue was resolved after an update from Merrill Lynch.
If you see any incorrect information in your Merrill Lynch accounts in Quicken, you should be able to correct these issues, and they will not reoccur. All data that you receive after 11:30pm ET on 9/22/25 should be correct.
To be notified of any updates on this issue, please click the bookmark ribbon located in the upper right. If you do not see the bookmark ribbon, please make sure that you are signed into the Quicken Community.
UPDATE: We now have detailed steps to fix the issue in the update comments below. Please follow the instructions to resolve the issues mentioned above.
Thank you!

[Removed-Disruptive] I sure do hope they can still resolve all of the Quicken issues related to Merrill Lynch transactions via the new forced EWC+ connection.

Interesting. I did not get that email. What I got today was this:
I did an OSU today with no issues with either ML or BoA, but, as noted in previous post (10/02/2025), I recently had to deactivate/reactivate online services to get ML OSU to work again. It appeared to be "working" but no transactions got downloaded
YMMV! Or as Ralph Waldo Emereson put it even more elegantly: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

I am still having inconsistent issues and I am still testing and I am still doing manual QFX data downloads for the best results. I'm slowly trying to have enough confidence to trust the Quicken Merrill Lynch EWC+ process.

I am waiting for the end of this month/beginning of next for the problematic transactions I have left to recur:
- Intinc (end of month): incorrect amounts in situation where I have two interest bearing securities (what do I call them?) in one account.
- Advisory program fee charge (beginning of month): Nothing in the Security or description field.
Everything else seems to be working for me. Mostly (maybe completely) those are sales, purchases, and dividends. These are routine things. What I haven't seen are:
- Stock splits or consolidations
- Any number of other corporate actions like when GE split itself into GE Health Care, GE Vernova and GE.
- A withdrawal from my IRA (but that's coming soon).

I just got forced to EWC+ from Direct Connect. Again, the pending stock trascations are coming in as cleared. They should not be cleared when pending. Then the next day they don't clear! I am getting tired of manhanding this. I would think that something like this should be able to be fixed. If it can not be fixed I would like to go back to direct connect! That was working.

Relative to the part about making a withdrawal from my IRA, I took a look at what last year's transactions looked like (aside from the security sales to get enough cash to make the withdrawal). There were 3 withdrawal transactions in the IRA, one each for state tax, federal tax, and the cash I got that was transferred to my brokerage account. There was one transaction in the brokerage account, a deposit of the cash transferred from the IRA. Each of those transactions had appropriate descriptive information in the Security and Description fields in the respective transaction registers. (The Security and Description fields were identical.)
Based on what I have seen with EWC+, particulary with EWC+'s handling of deposits and withdrawals, I do not expect to be pleasantly surprised with what EWC+ does with the withdrawal that is in progess as I write this post.
I'll let you know.

@jefflock, I have somewhat mixed feelings about the handling of stock transactions. Under Direct Connect, Quicken did not see purchases and sales until after they cleared but Merrilll Lynch updated the number of securities you held while those transactions were pending. This resulted in a popup message from OSU about mismatches between the number of shares in Quicken and the number of shares reported by Merrill Lynch for each security involved in a pending transaction. Unless you told Quicken to create placeholder transactions, the balance in Quicken would not match the balance on the website. If you did tell Quicken to create placeholders, you'd get another batch of mismatches when the transactions did clear and you'd end up with a whole bunch of useless placeholder transactions for +0 shares (if you are lucky) after all the transactions cleared. If you are not lucky (probably the timing is bad) you'll end up with a series of non-zero placeholder transactions that total 0 shares. With the pending transactions coming in, I am spared that. What I see in Quicken is more aligned with what Merrill Lynch is doing on its website. Better might be not getting the pending transactions and Merrill Lynch not updating the number of shares until after the transactions had cleared.
Don't get the idea I am some kind of day trader, I am not. I have an IRA with Merrill Lynch which they manage and they do a lot of trades. I sometimes wonder why I am playing them to play with my IRA money. They should be paying me. 😁

Thank you for the follow-up,
I'm glad to hear the transactions downloaded correctly. Are there any other lingering issues with the transactions (missing/incomplete/incorrect information)? Are the transactions consistently coming in correctly now?
Thank you!

@Quicken Kristina it is hard to say at this time if everythng is working. I have seen problems with:
- Intinc - Last month I mixed a qfx download with OSU and got garbled transactions because Direct Connect (which is what qfx mimics) and EWC+ did different things. I won't do a mix this month which should be in a few days. Something was wrong with them in July and Aug and I can't remember what happened in Sept.
- CGLong and CGShort - Soon after the cutover to EWC+ I got one (CGLong) and it was garbled and I haven't seen another since. I don't see them often. I have had 3 in 2025 all CGLong. They are all in the IRA account managed by ML. Looking at history, I have always gotten a couple in Dec.
- Withdrawal for progam advisory fee - this is the fee ML charges for managing my IRA. I don't remember what happened with this one in October but I may have had to edit it. I know it wasn't working Aug and Sept. I was still on Direct Connect for July's. There will be another at start of November.
- Whatever happens with stock splits/consolidations or corporate breakups/takeovers/buyouts. Nothing like that has occurred for me since the transition to EWC+. Things like that have happened for me prior to that transition and they worked. My managed IRA does have some Apple and Microsoft stock. Maybe you can convince one of them to buyout the other so we can see what happens. Or maybe a merger.😉
I'd like to hold off closing this until at least start of November but preferrably end of December.
Thanks

I continue to have inconsistent issues, and I am still testing, and I am still doing manual QFX data downloads for the best results. I'm slowly trying to have enough confidence to trust the Quicken Merrill Lynch EWC+ process. The effort I am putting into this is unfortunate…and costly for me.

Interestingly, Quicken is removing some of my posts related to the Quicken EWC+ and Merrill Lynch transition, including the ones whereby I call Quicken Support as recommended by Quicken on this thread only to have Quicken tell me they can't help until the issue is at least 48 hours old, even though I reported that the issue has been ongoing since 10/4/25, yet I've only started receiving failed alerts via Quicken in the Windows application for the last three days… Frustrating.
I am going to make another call to Quicken Support today.
MEL0 -
Quicken Support did appear to help my Quicken to Merrill Lynch EWC+ connection issues today (CC-501). Interestingly, I had to log off and then back on to my Quicken account and then, although I don't use the Quicken Sync, I had to turn on the Quicken Sync, reset the Sync, download my Merrill Lynch transactions, test the success, and then turn the Sync back off. I seem to be, finally, two steps forward on the Merrill Lynch EWC+ connection success. I'll continue to test as month end produces many transactions that will need to be downloaded. We see how the transaction downloads go and the viability of the proper data and transaction account locations.
Thank you, Quicken Support. Fingers crossed.
MEL0 -
Working with Quicken Technical Support to resolve my connectivity issues on 10/28/25, my Quicken to Merrill Lynch EWC+ connection issues came back today (CC-501) after working only two days. In my first transaction downloads, the data received was better, albeit there were no memo fields, however, the reinvestment transactions were consolidated from three to one transaction. Still work to do.
It continues to be a frustrating work in progress. Per Quicken Technical Support, I cannot call support to resolve the current CC-501 issue until it continues for 48 hours.

I've said this a couple of times on this thread: YMMV. Certainly @MELCO has had different experiences from mine. One thing I wonder about is to what extent what brokerage you use has anything to do with what is happening? I use the Ceglarski Group out of Darien, Connecticut. Does each brokerage have its own database? Does each brokerage even have its own database design? Does each brokerage have its own team that enters data into the database? Does each brokerage send its data to the same Quicken server? In the same way/format? On the same schedule?

@jdparker225 My Merrill Lynch accounts are managed directly by Merrill Lynch. My contacts are Merrill Lynch personnel. No middleman. Bank of America owns Merrill Lynch. I have no issues with Bank of America transaction downloads, nor the other seven companies I download data from via Quicken.
My Merrill Lynch transaction downloads via Quicken and EWC+ are down again today (10/31/25).
MEL0 -
@MELCO I have 3 financial institutions which connect via EWC+, one that connects with EWC, and one that's still on Direct Connect. I will say this, the one that is on Direct Connect has had the fewest problems with downloads.
I count Merrill Lynch and Bank of America as one financial institution. I have had relatively few issues with Bank of America. I have had to deactivate and reactivate download services for Bank of America twice recently to get downloads to work. In one case there was no error code, just no transactions downloaded. The second case (today) resulted from a popup, when I started OSU, saying something was wrong with one of my Bank of America accounts and Quicken led through what looked a lot like re-authorization.

@jdparker225 regarding Merrill Lynch, Direct Connect was definitely the better, albeit not perfect, transaction download method. QFX manual downloads are still my preferred method with EWC+ in the mix, although I am trying with EWC+.
Today is the beginning of my big month end reconciliation. The issues began. I continually get CC-501 errors, yet sometimes some transactions downloaded (Strange). I didn't get all of the transactions posted on my Merrill Lynch web site cleared through 10/31/25 and then some of the ones I did, specifically the interest transactions, were not properly categorized as just interest or as reinvested interest. I had to manually go to each Merrill Lynch account on the web site and manually reconcile and document each transaction properly. This takes a good amount of effort with all of the accounts and Quicken files I manage. This is not a good scenario for me.
For good or for bad, my background is in accounting, and my career was in technology…so this is extremely frustrating on both side of the equation.
