Overlooked Quicken Classic Features That Make Tax Season Easier

Tax time shouldn’t feel chaotic. Quicken Classic has built-in tools that can help you stay organized all year long. Whether you prepare your own taxes or just want accurate numbers to hand to your accountant, these five features make tax tracking easier and clearer. Let us know if you use any of these features and if you have found them to be helpful when preparing your taxes.

1. Assign Tax Line Items to Categories (Auto-Organize Your Tax Info)

What it does:
When you tell Quicken which IRS tax line each category should feed into, Quicken will sort your tax-related transactions into the correct IRS forms behind the scenes. That means when tax time rolls around, your reports match what your tax forms expect.

Who it’s great for:
Anyone who itemizes deductions, runs a small business, handles rentals, or wants cleaner tax reports.

Windows (Deluxe, Premier, Business & Personal):

Go to Tools > Category List.
Right-click a category → Edit.
In the Tax Reporting tab, pick the tax line item.
If needed, click the gear icon and check Tax Line Item to show the field.
Save.

Mac (All subscription levels):

Go to Window > Categories.
Select a category → click Edit.
Turn on Tax-Related and choose the Tax Schedule/Form and Tax Line.
Save.

Tip: Assign tax lines for categories you use often ; like donations, home office, business meals, and rental expenses. Quicken’s tax reports will organize them for you automatically.

2. Save Custom Tax Reports You Can Reuse Every Year

What it does:
Instead of digging through months of transactions, you can save a tax-focused report and reuse it each year — like a personal tax checklist.

Why it’s wonderful:
Reports like Donation Totals, Medical Expenses, Rental Costs, or Business Deductions become one-click tools for review and export.

Windows & Mac:

Run a report like Category Summary or Tax Schedule.
Click Customize to filter by date, category, tags, etc.
Choose Save Report (Windows: save by name; Mac: save from the top of the report pane).
Return any time via your Saved Reports list.

Pro tip: Use the saved report every month or quarter to stay up to date.

3. Attach Receipts & Documents to Transactions (Audit-Ready!)

What it does:
Keep receipts, invoices, or supporting tax docs right where the transaction lives. No more digging through folders or trying to match dates.

Why it’s useful:
When deductions or business expenses matter, the proof is right at your fingertips. This is great for audits, reimbursements, or verifying totals.

Windows & Mac:

Open the account register that contains the transaction.
Click once on the transaction you want to attach a document to.
Look for the paperclip icon:
- Either in the transaction itself
- Or at the top of the register
Click the paperclip icon.
Choose Attach File.
Browse to the file on your computer (PDF, JPG, PNG, etc.).
Select Open to attach it.

Quick tip: Before attaching, scan or take a photo of receipts with your phone and save to your computer. It makes adding them to transactions much faster.

4. Use Tags to Track Tax-Related Activity

What it does:
Tags give you another way to organize transactions. These are separate from categories and are perfect for tracking mixed-use expenses.

What people use tags for:
• Home Office
• Business vs. Personal
• Rental 1 vs. Rental 2
• Tax-Deductible
• FSA/HSA Eligible

Windows & Mac:

In Quicken Classic Windows: Tools > Tag List > New Tag
In Quicken Classic Mac: Window > Tags > Add Tag
Then assign tags when entering or editing transactions

Run reports that combine categories and tags. This is helpful for separating personal vs. business use, or grouping all tax-relevant expenses in one place.

5. Fix Categories in Bulk with Find, Recategorize & Batch Edit

What it does:
Sometimes transactions are placed in the incorrect category. This can happen after downloading from a bank. Instead of fixing them one by one, you can update many at once.

Windows:

Edit > Find & Replace (or use Tools > Recategorize) to find all transactions with a category and replace them.

Mac:

Use the Search field in the register, then Batch Edit to update categories/tags in groups.

Pro tip: Before you start, make a backup. This is just in case you change something you didn’t mean to.

Latest Releases

The latest Quicken for Windows release R65.15 and R65.17. There were many new features and improvements made. Some notable changes were:

NEW - Added the ability to export selected accounts and related data into a new Quicken Transfer Format (.QXF) file, which can then be imported to create a new Quicken data file.
NEW - A new customization option that allows you to specify how Quicken handles Money Market Funds (MMF) in a brokerage account.
IMPROVED - When linking a reminder to an online bill, you can now choose which payment account to keep if both use the same biller.
IMPROVED - Added the ability to import investment transactions into the investment register using a CSV file, accessible from the register gear icon or the File > Import menu.
FIXED - A problem where renaming rules did not apply to downloaded transactions, causing memorized payees to stop filling in categories when accepting Check Pay and Quick Pay transactions from the register.
FIXED - An issue where converting a Money Market Fund transaction to a dividend did not remove the cost basis or share count. These values now correctly reset to zero when the transaction changes to a dividend.

Mastering Tagging in Quicken (Mac & Windows)

Hello Quicken Community!

It’s been a little while! But we are back and this month, we’ll dive into tagging strategies that work for both Quicken Classic for Windows and Quicken Classic for Mac users. We’ll also walk you through the steps of how to apply tags in each platform.

So Why Use Tags?

One of the most powerful and sometimes overlooked tools in Quicken Classic is Tags. Unlike categories, which tell you what a transaction is (Groceries, Utilities, Salary), tags let you add an extra layer of context. Tags can help you organize transactions across categories, track projects or events, and get more meaningful reports. Here are just a few ways tags can transform your financial tracking:

Project Tracking: Add a “Kitchen Remodel” tag to expenses across Home Improvement, Hardware, and Appliances categories.
Event Planning: Tag transactions like “Graduation Party” or “Wedding” to capture everything related to one event—even if the spending falls into multiple categories.
Income vs. Expense Segments: Tag freelance income streams (e.g., “Client A,” “Client B”) or side hustles to compare profitability.
Shared Expenses: Tag expenses for a roommate or family member to easily split costs.
Travel: Keep trips together with tags like “Paris 2025” or “Road Trip.”

How to Add Tags in Quicken

For Quicken Windows:

Open the Register for the account you’re working in.
Locate the Tag field (right next to Category in most registers).
In the Tag column, type the tag you’d like to use.
- If it’s new, Quicken will prompt you to add it.
- If it exists, it will auto-fill.
Save the transaction, and your tag is applied.

For Quicken Mac:

In the Register, double-click a transaction to edit it.
In the transaction details, look for the Tags field.
Type in your tag, or choose from an existing tag in the dropdown.
Save the transaction.

Enhancing Reports with Tags

Tags aren’t just for organization. They work great in reporting.

For Classic Windows:
- Go to Reports > Spending > Spending by Tag (or customize an existing report to filter by tag).
- Combine tags with categories for highly detailed insights (e.g., Dining Out + Business Trip).

For Classic Mac:
- In the Reports sidebar or menu, locate Reports → Transactions by Tag.
  - Some users note that in their setup this appears as a default report option.
- Open Transactions by Tag. It will list transactions organized by tag.
- Click Edit (or the gear icon) in the report toolbar to open the customization dialog.
- In the customization / edit panel, switch to the Tags tab.
- Select or deselect tags to include in the report.
- (Optional) On the Advanced tab, adjust whether to include transfers (they may be excluded by default) so the tagged transfer data appears.
- Confirm or adjust other filters (accounts, date range) and click OK / Apply.
- The resulting report now shows only those transactions matching the tag filters you set.
- (Optional) Save the report configuration under a memorable name, like “Project X – Tags Report,” so you can reuse it without re-customizing.

Tagging Best Practices

Keep it Simple: Don’t create so many tags that reports become overwhelming.
Be Consistent: Decide whether you’ll use singular or plural terms, abbreviations, etc., and stick with them.
Review Annually: At year-end, review your tags. Retire unused ones and refine your system for the year ahead.

Latest Releases

The latest Quicken for Windows release versions this month were R64.23 HF1, R64.25, R64.29, and R64.30. Some highlights from those releases were:

FIXED - Quicken no longer removes tags from scheduled payments when you refresh bills from the dashboard or during One Step Update.
FIXED - Cloud sync no longer hangs when syncing memorized payees with tag changes.
FIXED - Resolved overlapping fields and default value issue in Custom date range settings in report preferences.
IMPROVED - Fixed the improved cash and money market fund handling for Fidelity brokerage accounts connected via Express Web Connect+.

The latest releases for Quicken Classic for Mac were Version 8.3.1 and 8.3.2.

IMPROVED - We now default to Detailed Tracking when adding accounts at financial institutions that support detailed tracking.
NEW - You can now bulk-import security prices (from a single CSV file with prices for multiple dates and multiple securities).
IMPROVED - You can now add the cost basis of holdings within the Capital Gains Estimator.
FIXED - The Portfolio Graph now shows negative values even when set for “Y-Axis starts at zero”.
FIXED - Resolved an issue where bills for $0 were always entered as Income after using Edit & Mark as Paid to edit the amount.

Welcome to this edition of the Quicken Community Newsletter! We’re excited to spotlight some lesser-known features introduced to Quicken for Windows and Mac over the past year—quality-of-life improvements you might have missed in the release notes. Let’s dive in!

Windows

Tax‑Loss Harvesting Report (R62 – April 2025)

A hidden gem for smarter investing: the new Tax Loss Harvesting report (Premier & above) displays unrealized losses by individual lots. The kind of detail savvy investors appreciate. To find this report:

Open Quicken.
Go to the Investing tab.
Click Reports from the top menu bar.
Navigate to:
All Reports > Tax
Select Tax Loss Harvesting report

Show Cents in Reports (R62 – April 2025)

Also in R62: a new preference lets you toggle cents on/off in any report, giving you a cleaner view when you need it. Available in all editions.

Show or Hide Hidden Accounts Anywhere (R58 – July 2024)

A small but powerful tweak: now you can show or hide hidden accounts across various dialogs including: register views, transfer dialogs, and reports. This gives you better control over what you see and keeps dashboards clutter-free. (Available in all editions (Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business, etc.)

Mac

Enhanced Projected Balance Graphs

Visualizing your financial future has become more flexible. The Projected Balance graph now offers improved inspection and date range selection, along with a new “Y-axis starts at zero” option. These enhancements provide a clearer picture of your projected finances.

Zillow Integration for Real Estate Valuation

Stay updated on your property's market value with the new Zillow integration. This feature automatically updates your real estate account with the latest estimated market values, ensuring your net worth calculations are current.

Capital Gain Estimator Enhancements

Planning investment sales is more precise with the improved Capital Gain Estimator. You can now filter securities by specific accounts, update the sell price of lots, and display securities by symbol or name, aiding in tax planning and investment decisions. Available in Premier and above.

· Note: The Capital Gain Estimator itself is only in Premier and up.

To find the Capital Gain Estimator Tool:

Open Quicken for Mac and navigate to your Brokerage Account or the overall Investing section.
In the toolbar at the top-right of the investing view, click Investing Tools.
From the dropdown menu, select Capital Gains Estimator.

IMPROVED - Renaming Rule screen by clarifying the purpose of Change Payee To and If the payee contains fields, replacing drop-down with radio buttons, and refining the layout.
IMPROVED - Interrupted Online Backup attempts will now retry automatically up to five times.

How to See Your Finances Clearly

A Personal Financial Health Dashboard is a powerful tool for gaining a clear, real-time snapshot of your financial well-being. By consolidating all your accounts, budgets, spending, and goals in one place, it provides actionable insights that help you make smarter financial decisions. This
dashboard allows you to monitor key metrics like net worth, spending trends, and debt reduction progress, making it easier to spot potential issues early and stay on track with your financial goals. Creating one is especially beneficial during life transitions, such as starting a new job,
planning for a major purchase, or preparing for retirement, as it simplifies complex financial tracking and encourages accountability. Whether you’re seeking better control over your money or aiming to achieve long-term goals, a financial health dashboard is an essential first step toward financial clarity and peace of mind. Another benefit is it can be created in both
Classic Quicken for Windows and Mac. So, let's get into how to create the
dashboard in Quicken.

Steps for Mac Users

Step 1: Set Up Key Accounts

Add Accounts:
- Go to Accounts > New Account.
- Choose the account type, such as Bank, Credit Card, Loan, or Investment, and follow the steps to add your data.
Ensure you’ve added all financial accounts to create a complete view of your financial situation.

Step 2: View and Organize the Dashboard

Access the Overview Page:
- Open the Home tab, which serves as your default dashboard.
- This page automatically includes widgets like Net Worth, Spending by Category, and Cash Flow.
Focus on Key Metrics:
- While the dashboard is not fully customizable, you can click on individual widgets (like Spending or Cash Flow) to view more details and refine reports within each section.

Step 3: Use Reports for Additional Insights

Go to Reports > Net Worth or Reports > Spending.
Customize reports by setting time frames or focusing on specific accounts.
Save frequently used reports and revisit them from the Reports menu for quick access to additional dashboard-like metrics.

Step 4: Set Up Savings Goals

Navigate to Planning > Savings Goals.
Create savings or debt reduction goals and track progress over time. While savings goals don’t appear directly on the dashboard, they provide essential data for your financial health.

Step 5: Enable Notifications for Financial Alerts

Go to Quicken > Preferences > Alerts.
Set alerts for budget thresholds, low account balances, and upcoming bill payments to stay informed about critical updates to your finances.

Steps for Windows Users

Step 1: Set Up Key Accounts

Add all your accounts:
- Go to Tools > Add Account.
- Select the account type (e.g., Bank, Credit Card, Loan, or Investment) and follow the prompts to connect or manually input data.
Repeat this process for all accounts, ensuring all financial data is centralized in Quicken.

Step 2: Customize the Home Tab

Navigate to the Home tab in Quicken for Windows, which serves as your financial dashboard.
On the right side of the screen, locate the Settings icon (a gear-shaped icon).
Click the gear icon and select Customize from the dropdown menu. This will open the customization options for your dashboard.
In the customization menu:
- Choose which widgets (cards) to display, such as Net Worth, Spending by Category, Budget Overview, or Investment Performance.
- Arrange the order of the widgets by dragging them to your preferred positions.
Save your changes to display the customized dashboard.

Step 3: Set Up Goals

Navigate to Planning > Budgets or Savings Goals.
Create a new goal for things like emergency funds, retirement, or debt payoff.
Monitor these goals directly from the dashboard.

Step 4: Utilize Reports for Deeper Insights

While reports in Quicken for Windows can’t be pinned to the Home tab, they offer valuable details for tracking financial health. Here’s how to access and use them effectively:

Access the Default Net Worth Report:
- Navigate to the Reports menu at the top of the screen.
- Select What Am I Worth? under Easy Answer Reports.
- Select the Year to Date and then Show Report.
- This report provides a comprehensive view of your total assets minus liabilities over a chosen time period.
Run Other Key Reports:
- Go to Reports and choose from categories like:
  - Spending for detailed spending analysis by category or payee.
  - Banking for transaction summaries.
  - Investment Performance to monitor portfolio growth.
Save Customized Reports:
- Once a report is tailored to your needs, click Save Reports and give it a meaningful name.
- Access saved reports later by going to Reports > Manage Saved Reports.
Export Reports for External Use:
- Click the Export button to save reports as Excel or PDF files. This is useful for sharing data with financial advisors or analyzing trends outside Quicken.

The latest Quicken for Windows release was R60.12, R60.14 and R60.15. Some highlights from those releases were:

Tax Export now creates a single TXF file that combines Capital Gains with other tax information, and you can specify the tax year for the export. Quicken can also create a tax export file in the modernized TXJ format. You can still create separate export files using Tax Tools in the Planning/Tax Center tab.
Updated tax rates for 2025. The new tax rates are effective January 1, 2025.
Access to the "Collapse all graphs in reports by default" setting has been added to the Display dialog in reports.
The Account Bar now displays totals for individual sections within main account groups.
The Investment Asset Allocation report no longer includes sold or expired securities.
You can now search for specific settings in the Preferences dialog.
Transaction dates retain separator hyphens when using the (ddd dd-MM-yyyy) short date format (e.g., Tue 12-11-2024).

Enhancements have been made to the Security Detail feature

Fixed bugs that could cause the Update Accounts progress indicator to prematurely report that the update completed, or in some cases caused the indicator to continue spinning after an update had completed

We talk about budgeting a lot over here at Quicken but budgeting is an essential practice for managing personal finances effectively, ensuring that your spending aligns with your income, and achieving your financial goals. By using budgeting tools, you can gain a clear and organized view of your financial situation, track your expenses, and identify areas where you can save. These tools help in creating a realistic budget plan, allowing for better decision-making and fostering a sense of control over your finances. Whether you're planning for short-term needs or long-term aspirations, budgeting is the key to financial stability and growth.

But we do not all budget the same.

Many of us view and experience money differently. Even looking at numbers on paper or a screen can be overwhelming for some. Given that we live our lives in such diverse ways, it makes sense that we also budget our finances differently.

Unique Budgeting Techniques

Quicken offers a variety of unique budgeting techniques to help you manage your finances effectively. For example, using watchlists allows you to track specific stocks and securities without impacting your budget. Category exclusions can give you a clearer picture of your financial health by excluding liabilities like mortgages from net worth calculations. Custom budget reports enable detailed analysis of spending trends, and split transactions allow for precise allocation of expenses across multiple categories. Implementing rolling budgets lets you carry over unspent amounts to the next month, promoting savings. Seasonal budgeting helps manage fluctuating expenses by setting up separate budgets for different times of the year, while project-based budgeting keeps large, one-time expenses separate from regular budgets. It is nice to know exactly where your money is going, and having a plan can reduce financial stress. Overall, tracking spending in Quicken provides a structured approach to financial management, helping you achieve your financial goals, stay organized, and make informed decisions. This month, we look at how to set up this method of planning in both Quicken Classic for Windows and Quicken Classic for Mac.

Using Categories and Tagging

Quicken enables users to create detailed budgets, set spending limits for various categories, and track their progress against these budgets. This is perfect for when you are going on vacation.

Let’s look at how to track your getaway using categories and tagging in Quicken. Tracking a vacation in Quicken involves creating specific categories and tags to accurately record all related expenses. This month we are focusing on bill payment in Quicken. This tool helps you track and manage your bills efficiently. Quicken offers bill tracking, online bill pay (more robust in Windows), e-bills, payment scheduling, and customizable reminders and alerts. Overall, bill payment is meant to ensure your payments are made on time and you are better organized financially. There are differences in what is offered in Quicken Classic for Windows versus Quicken Classic for Mac and we will discuss those as well.

I know with summer coming up, I am busier, and having a way to pay my bills on time and accurately in Quicken makes life easier.

Paying your bills

While Quicken for Windows and Quicken for Mac both offer robust bill payment features, there are some differences in functionality and interface between the two platforms.

Let's get into Quicken Classic for Windows first and the how to use the feature Bill Manager. With Bill Manager you can pay your bills in two ways:

Quick Pay: Send electronic payments to billers (payees) who have online accounts accessible by Quicken. This includes over 11,000 billers.
Check Pay: Send a check to anyone in the United States with an address. The check is sent through a Quicken service, so you will no longer need to print or mail checks.

Quicken Classic for Windows also offers more advanced scheduling options. They are available for setting up one-time or recurring payments, with better integration into the overall financial planning tools.

Keep in mind that you need to have Quicken Classic Premier or Quicken Classic Business & Personal, for both bill tracking and bill payment features to be included as part of your subscription. Quicken Classic Starter and Deluxe come with bill tracking. If you’d like to add bill payment, you can either upgrade or sign up.

You also have more customizable reminders and alerts to notify you of upcoming bills, due dates, and payment statuses.

Moving on to Quicken Classic for Mac, you have less integration with online bill payment services compared to Windows. We offer basic bill tracking, allowing users to enter bill details, set reminders, and track payments.

When it comes to bill tracking, you are allowed to enter and track your bills in one place. Users can input details like due dates, amounts, and payees to keep an organized record of their financial obligations.

The Bill Manager integrates with users' financial accounts, and provides a comprehensive view of their cash flow and ensuring that bill payments are accounted for in their overall financial planning. Some billers support the downloading of electronic bills (e-bills) directly into Quicken. This feature allows users to view their bills without logging into multiple websites, consolidating their bill management in one place.

One aspect to consider is that users can schedule payments within the software. While Quicken Classic for Mac does not facilitate direct payments, it allows users to plan and record when they intend to make payments, ensuring they are aware of upcoming financial commitments.

Both Quicken for Windows and Mac offer reports that provide insights into users' spending patterns, upcoming bills, and cash flow. These reports help users understand their financial situation better.

For the month of April we had releases R55.26 and , R56.9 for Quicken Classic for Windows. Some highlights from these releases are:

Hidden accounts were mistakenly excluded from the Portfolio Value card on the Dashboard. Accounts will now remain included regardless of their visibility in transaction entry lists.
You now have the option to download Pending Transactions. This will allow you to see transactions that have not yet cleared if your bank provides that information to Quicken. Go to Preferences > Pending Transactions to enable this feature for your banking and credit card accounts.
Added an option to select and remove unmatched transactions from the Manually Match Transactions list.
Resolved the issue where the Due In x filter in Bills & Income incorrectly reset to 14 days after being changed.

We released 7.7 & 7.7.1 in April for Quicken Classic for Mac users. Some highlights from these releases are:

We improved where you can more easily toggle between balance types (Today, Online, and Projected) in the Sidebar customization menu.
Another improvement that was made was we‘ve streamlined the progress indicator in the Sidebar while updating accounts.
A new feature that was added was the Home Dashboard can now be customized by changing the currency.

Quicken offers many features in both Quicken Classic for Windows and Quicken Classic for Mac. One of those features that you can find in both is investment tracking. While the core functionality is similar, there may be minor differences in their interface, specific features, and updates between the two. We are going to look at the differences in Windows and Mac for this feature but what is great is that both offer robust investment tracking capabilities, allowing you to monitor portfolios, analyze performance, track transactions, and manage investments effectively.

Investment tracking

In the world of finance, keeping track of investment rates is essential for making informed decisions and maximizing returns. Whether you're a experienced investor or just starting, understanding how to monitor and analyze your investments is crucial.

Let's take a look at Quicken Classic for Windows first.

Quicken for Windows offers portfolio management which allows you to track and manage your investment portfolios, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, and retirement accounts. Quicken also updates the prices of your investments automatically and provides real-time or delayed quotes depending on your preference.

In Quicken, there are investment reports that you can use to analyze the performance of your investments. You can also create comparison charts and set up asset allocation analysis.

Quicken records investment transactions, like your buys, sells, dividends and capital gains. This makes it easy to track your transactions and reconcile your investment accounts with accuracy.

Additionally to investment reports, Quicken offers tax-related reports and tools, such as capital gains reports, tax summary reports, and tax-related investment insights to help you with tax planning and filing.

Quicken for Mac allows you to monitor your investment portfolios, view investment details, and track investment performance. And like the Windows version, it provides automatic price updates for your investments, keeping you informed about market changes.

You can also record investment transactions, such as buys, sells, dividends, and transfers, to maintain accurate investment records.

Like Quicken for Windows, Quicken for Mac offers investment-related reports, such as investment performance reports, portfolio value reports, and transaction history reports. They may look a little different than what is seen in Windows.

Lastly, while it may not be as an extensive tax-related feature as the Windows version, Quicken for Mac still provides basic investment-related tax information and reports to assist with tax preparation.

Overall, whether you are using Windows or Mac; using Quicken is helpful when it comes to tracking investments. By utilizing these features in Quicken you will stay informed while diversifying your portfolio and making investment decisions that are best for you and your portfolio.

Releases this past month

For the month of March we had releases R55.12, R55.13, and R55.15 for Quicken Classic for Windows. Some highlights from these releases are:

Corrected an issue in the Tax Planner where the values and estimated refund / amount due would change when users reviewed the details.
Improved One Step Update progress screen with clearer messaging, reduced user interruptions, and faster updates.
Fixed various crashes including a crash that sometimes occurred in Quicken's Payee Search.
Resolved a problem where customers could not enable Complete Investing for manual accounts after disconnecting from an Express Web Connect (EWC) account.

We released 7.6 & 7.6.1 in March for Quicken Classic for Mac users. Some highlights from these releases are:

The connection status of hidden accounts is now correctly reported.
Now find backup settings on a new Backup tab in the Settings window.
In the Tags and Categories lists, you can now hide/show, see the number of uses, and run a report for each used item.

This month we are discussing the Tax Planner as it is in fact, tax season. The Tax Planner has been around for a while and like the Lifetime Planner, many of you have voiced that it is out of date and can be improved. So let's take a look into what the Tax Planner can do and discuss what you as users would like to see changed.

This Planner is not available in Quicken Classic for Mac, but it is planned to be added. So now is the chance to voice your opinions on what you would like to see.

If you have an idea that you want implemented, post it in the product idea section so it can be voted on. With enough votes, we will forward the idea to the product development team for consideration. This is the best way to see features that you use improved upon.

We have a current idea regarding the Tax Planner regarding how certain sections of the planner can be improved.

This is a tool that, although can be very helpful, users felt could be improved. Quicken’s Tax Planner is also a helpful tool that has been around for quite sometime in Quicken Classic for Windows. The Tax Planner empowers you to proactively manage your taxes, optimize your financial decisions, and achieve better tax outcomes. The Tax Planner in Quicken helps you predict your tax bill by analyzing your income, deductions, and credits. You can also explore different financial scenarios to see how they affect your taxes, find ways to save on taxes, and receive reminders for important tax deadlines to stay organized. This week, we take a deeper dive into the Tax Planner, how to use it and how it can be improved.

The Tax Planner and how to best use it

The Quicken Tax Planner is designed for individuals and households who want to effectively manage their taxes and make informed financial decisions. It can also benefit a wide range of users like: small business owners, investors, and retirees.
Some key aspects of the Tax Planner are:

Tax Projection: The Tax Planner allows you to project your tax liability for the current year based on your income, deductions, credits, and other tax-related information. This projection helps you estimate how much you may owe or get back when filing your taxes.

Scenario Planning: You can create multiple tax scenarios to see how different financial decisions, such as increasing retirement contributions or selling investments, could impact your taxes. This feature helps you make informed decisions to minimize your tax burden.

Some things to keep in mind is users may find Quicken's Tax Planner could be improved by better integrating with external tax preparation software for a smoother tax filing experience. Additionally, adding more advanced tax optimization strategies, like tax-loss harvesting and detailed retirement planning, could offer users greater flexibility and precision in managing their taxes.

To get to the Tax Planner in Quicken, follow these steps:
Go to the "Planning" tab located at the top of the Quicken window.
In the "Planning" tab, you will find a section called "Tax Center." Click on "Tax Center" to open it.
Click on "Show Tax Planner" to launch the Tax Planner tool.
Once you've accessed the Tax Planner, you can start using it to project your tax liability, explore tax-saving strategies, and manage your tax-related information effectively.

*The Tax Planner is only available in Quicken Classic for Windows; however, it is planned to come to Quicken Classic for Mac in the future. Please stay tuned and let us know what you want to see improved.

What Are Your Goals?

Many who use Quicken, want a system that makes organizing and keeping track of your finances easier. We all have different goals when it comes to what we want from our finances. These goals help guide financial planning, budgeting, and investment decisions. Financial goals can vary widely depending on individual circumstances and priorities.

Payee Look Up

If your goal is to track and pay bills through Quicken, the best way to do so is to set up online payees. Online payees are payees Quicken can access directly to get payment information and in some cases, to pay the bill directly.

Quicken makes it easy to look up specific payees.

For Mac users, when you’re in the register looking at a transaction from a payee, you may want to see the other transactions from the same payee. If you do, simply right-click on the transaction and select the Find feature. For example, if you see a charge from Apple, right-click on the transaction and you’ll see the option Find Apple. After selecting Find Apple, you would then see all of your Apple transactions in the register.

For Window users, there’s a quick way to do that. Just right-click on the transaction in the column you want to search by. You’ll see a list of options, including the option to search based on that value.

July 2023 Releases

Windows

We had 2 releases in July for Quicken for Windows: R50.16 and R51.10. As always, we recommend you perform a One Step Update to ensure that your data is synced to the cloud. You should also make a backup of your data file. You can find the lastest updates for Quicken at this support article.

Here are some fixes and new updates that were made:

Added an Ignore all accounts / Ignore all linked accounts option to the Add Account process. This will aid customers with many accounts. They will no longer need to deselect each account they do not want to add.
Made it easier to remove an Online Biller by adding a Delete Biller option in the Action menu dropdown.
Fixed an issue where transactions were not being entered when the reminders were set to auto-enter.

Mac

This month for Mac users, 7.2 and 7.2.1 was released. You will see new features, fixes and improvements in areas such as accounts, payments and the dashboard as well as general bug fixes. Some new additions and fixes are:

If you have numerous accounts (15 or more) with the same financial institution, it is now easier to choose which accounts you would like to add, or link, in Quicken.
You can now view your securities by Name or Symbol on the Investments Dashboard Holdings card.
If you pay your bills on your Biller’s website, now you can save the website’s URL in Quicken for fast and easy access.

This morning when I started quicken it performed an upgrade.<\/p>

After that all my *.quicken files are missing. Everything was working fine yesterday.<\/p>

I have searched my computer and I cannot find any *.quicken files except for one of the test files I created many months ago when I moved from Windows. I have looked in the usual places and done a simple search of my entire computer for these files. The most recent backup files are from a year ago. I would appreciate any suggestions. I purchased $49,843 of zero coupon 6 month T-Bills in December 2022. In the Dashboard and Portfolio views of the account, the bonds are also reflected at 100X value. When I run the standard Net Worth report, it shows the market value of these bonds as $4,983,300. My monthly net worth report also shows this inflated value until the bonds matured in June 2023, at which time the value of the holding reverted to the correct value of $50,000.<\/p>

The purchase transaction also created a transaction dated in 2016 of a purchase of this exact security of 49,500 shares (100X the actual amount); this fictitious transaction seems to be causing the inflated value, but I can't get rid of it.<\/p>

My something like 18 year old Mac G5 died last week. I backed up the auto Quicken backup data file to a thumb drive weekly, so I have a current backup of the data. But Support is telling me there is no way to convert that data to the newly installed Quicken on the new Mini. This is crazy frustrating. What's the point of buying software with an automatic data backup built in, if after years of use that data can no longer be migrated to a new version of the software. There has to be some way to import that data - perhaps hopping to a slightly new version first, and then going from that to the new version I just loaded on the Mini? I do have a backup on thumb drive of the 2005 Quicken application, but it is crossed out when I pull up the folder containing the backup - basically telling me that it is not accessible? My next option is to take the G5 to a third party vender to see if they can do something with the drive to allow me access to that old Quicken and at least print out a balance sheet with ending balances for me to start anew in the new version? That will not be cheap. Apple Support refused to touch the G5 - said it was too old. <\/p>

I have seen all over how to enter the sale and split it off to record the sale. I am a little confused on if I should be using transfers or the \"credit\" \"debit\" people are mentioning. <\/p>

I have a cost basis at 656k sale at 775k. Fees paid at 41k. 585k on a loan that was paid off. 149K paid cash to us into our checking account. <\/p>

quicken had an asset account (5 Alexander Way) that was setup to track the cost basis. There was a loan account (mortgage) set up to track the loan. and a checking account Please could I get some help in how to enter this transaction in the checking account? I have been trying to do it using transfer [account] for category then selecting the account in the transfer drop down. The plus and minus seems to be the issue. where I want to enter a plus it then brings the other account in the wrong direction. Seems both are never happy if that makes sense. see below.<\/p>

Quicken offers a variety of ways to see how you are doing financially. We all learn and take in information differently. Having information presented in different forms is helpful, whether it be visual or verbal, for example. Quicken offers reports and the data can be presented in various forms where you can get an overview of your financial habits. We go through a couple of those this month.
